Empty Giftcard

I recently received a gift card that was supposed to have $50 on it. When I went to redeem it, it said it was a $0 balance. The gift card number and the PIN number were still covered by the silver seal, so I’m not sure what happened. Has anyone else experienced this? 

I know gift card scams are rampant, but I’d like to be able to use the amount I was gifted. Otherwise it’s like me and the person who bought the card lost the money.
