What is truly the difference between a $50 curling iron and the $150+ ones??

I currently use, and have used for years, a $50 Hot Tools brand curling iron and styling/flat iron from Ulta. Spending $150+ on a curling iron or flat iron is a lot of money... What truly are the differences or benefits to my hair for spending that kind extra money to upgrade? Is it worth it? What am I missing because all the descriptions sound the same?

@leaozzie I've read that heat tools are like most other products - there are good and not so good ones at price level.  I have read that Hot Tools is a good brand, so you should be just fine.  I always splurge on flat irons for myself, but last year I bought a top of the line Babyliss and it was so poor performing I returned it.

@leaozzie I’ve been doing hair a very long time. I specialize in extensions nowadays. I use Hot Tools on myself as well as clients. I prefer the rainbow series only because it can get up to 450 degrees. In reality, they all work the same. Some have special coatings that claim to be “healthy” for the hair but... heat is heat and none of it is good for our hair.

The only reason you would need need to upgrade is if your tool isn’t holding heat, you want a bigger or smaller barrel size or if it breaks. Other than that, I don’t feel the need to spend $150-200 on a flat iron or curling iron for home use. Hot Tools is an amazing brand that have great quality irons.

Just remember to use thermal protectors and I definitely recommend Olaplex No 3 for a weekly treatment.

Thank you so much for replying and for the info and recommendation; especially as a professional. You are just beautiful and my hair and skin color are very close to yours so I always look for your posts and pics on Sephora for inspiration! Thank you again and I'll be sure to get Olaplex 3!

@darlyndar Hot Tools Rainbow Series? I've never even heard of a rainbow series. I just use the trusty 24K Gold.

ULTA carry the HotTools line in the Rainbow series. The metal looks has cool finish that is different colors in the light. Same prices though for the most part ($49.99 & up) but they still have the great long cords!
