Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

2021 Challenge located here: Pan It! - 2021 Challenge 🏆

It's time for a new decade, and a new Project Pan!

Before we dive into the details, I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me in another year of panning.  I cannot believe that this thread marks the 4th year of this challenge and how much it has grown over the years.  It's been a joy to witness so many of you participate and encourage others along the way.  For those of you thinking, "there's no way I can do that," think again!  We've all said that at one time or another, and some of the biggest skeptics have grown to take panning by storm.  Thank you all for your never ending inspiration 😘. Cheers to a new decade 🥂-Elle

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Good luck!! Those ND shadows are massive and so hard to pan. Using them 4x a week I'm sure you will be able to hit pan!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thank you @xcicee! 😃 I’m happy I’m using these shadows; they really are so nice. I remember a tip from @ElleElleG to pick up product in the same place as a way to work through a project pan for eyeshadow palettes so that’s what I’ve been doing and will continue to do. 😃 We shall see if I can keep up the 4x per week rate this month; I’m headed out of town for work and hadn’t planned on taking this palette with me. 🤔

RE: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

YAAAASSSS to a great start to 2020 panning! I finished my gigantic bottle of body wash AND another lipstick! I am continuing to grow and evolve when it comes to beauty and cosmetics and my most important takeaway for this new year is: if it isn’t working, don’t beat yourself up to finish every single last teeny little bit! Thank it for its service a la Marie Kondo, and let it go! For me this is most important with lip products and nail polish—I don’t want to waste time “making” myself use something when I’ve lost enjoyment in it or the formula isn’t up to par. With this mindset, I want to knock out at least one lipstick every quarter, if not two; I’m using a different lipstick at each of my jobs to work on two products at once. And nail polish I want to have visible progress like empty space in the bottles by the end of the year. Happy panning everyone!! January 2020 Empties: -Giovanni Eco Chic Cleanse Invigorating Body Wash in Tea Tree Triple Treat 1000 ml/33.8 fl oz (this has taken me since September 2018 to finish—major win!!!) -Glow Recipe Watermelon Pink Juice Oil-free Moisturizer 60 ml/2 oz -Tribute Equine Nutrition lip balm 4.32 g -Neogen Dermalogy Bio-Peel+ Gauze Peeling in Lemon 30 count/200 ml/6.76 fl oz (extremely sad Sephora stopped carrying this) -Laura Mercier Caviar Volume mascara in Glossy Black 3 ml/0.1 fl oz -Sephora Collection Clean Skin Gel Cleanse + Tone 15 ml/0.5 fl oz -Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Chocolate 0.085 g/0.003 oz -Biossance Squalane + Tea Tree Balancing Oil 4 ml/0.13 fl oz -Smashbox Be Legendary Matte Lipstick in Screen Queen 1.3 g/0.04 oz (estimating 10-15% left but it’s old and I’m over the color so I’ll thank it for its service and move on)

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

On a roll already @KeriCherryDee

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

That is a worthwhile takeaway @KeriCherryDee! Looking forward to seeing which products you go through and which you decide to let go.

Re: RE: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I really need to learn that lesson @KeriCherryDee. I must be a glutton for punishment because I force myself to finish products. You are off to an awesome start!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Great progress @xcicee

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Wow! 🤩 So impressive and inspiring, @xcicee! 😃 Keep up the good work!

RE: Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thank you Fi!! I am so close on the colourpop shadow I hope to hit pan this month and rotate a new color on. Hope your project is going well too!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Hi @xcicee ,

Amazing progress! I love the Chocolate Bar Palettes so much and the ABH Palettes.

Best Wishes,

Janean

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thank you!! I'm really liking the abh formula now that I've had practice with eyeshadow. It was awful starting to learn and using the abh ones!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Wow awesome progress. Thats a lot of pan progress on those palettes since December!

RE: Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thank you!! Powder pans are definitely the most satisfying. I think it only took me about 30 uses to hit pan on the blush, which is crazy as the only one blush I’ve hit pan on (Burberry one) took 400+.

I used (actually a couple) of those samples of the Gloss...

I used (actually a couple) of those samples of the Gloss Moderne & liked it. too bad Sephora stopped carrying the brand😞 @xcicee great progress!

RE: I used (actually a couple) of those samples of the Gloss...

I really like gloss moderne!! They are pricey but I stocked up back in 2017 when they were almost 70% off through gilt city. I’ve tried the shampoo, conditioner, serum, and hair mask. The mask is the standout for sure, it’s my favorite of the ones I’ve tried. This serum does a decent job but I hate the smell, it doesn’t smell like coconut like the rest of the line. I have a lot of hair stuff to use so this needs to go!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

WOW - amazing job @xcicee! Can't wait to see how the year goes for you. You're off to a great start.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thanks a lot Erica!! It's definitely motivating to be so close to finishing! The next few months will definitely be slower because I only have one mini lipstick left in my pan list and 2 FS lipsticks; the FS ones are so hard for me I have never finished one before.

Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Ok my 20 in 2020 Sample Stash Challenge This is a list of what I organized my samples into. Its not necessarily the order of how I'm going to "pan" [these are for me, which drawer] 1. Eye Creams 2. Peels 3. Serum [Other] 4. Body Lotions 5. Wash off masks [General] 6. Cleansers 7. Setting spray/powder 8. Moisturizers 9. Face Primer 10. Foundations 11. Face:Essences 12. Face:Toner 13. Face:Treatment Oils 14. Exfoliators [face] 15. Concealers/Color Correctors 16. Sunscreens *summer time 17. Serum [Brightening] 18. Serum [Hydrating] 19. Serum [Retinol] 20. Sleeping Masks And to make it fun, I'll let y'all pick what I kick off February with! Some of these are smaller quantities so I'll probably have more than 1 going in the same month...😘

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I'm excited for another year of the panning challenge. I lost focus last year on my 19 in 19, but I'm not going to let that stop me from trying to do 20 in 2020. I always have high hopes of how much I'm going to use my products, but I find I get a little lazy as the year goes on. I've got a bevy of goals this year, so I'm hoping that as I accomplish things, it will propel me to keep going with other ones. Anyway, here are my 20 for the year:

IMG_20200105_052141.jpg

Spoiler
1. Dr Teals Epsom Salt 584 g
2.Bite Beauty Lipstick in Verbena 16g
3. The Ordinary Niacinamide Serum
4. Bvlgari Omnia Paraiba Travel Perfume
5. Earth Therapeutics Dream Zone Pillow Mist
6. Sephora Micellar Water
7. The Face Shop Le Marche The Therapy Emulsion
8. Voluspa Copper Clove Candle
9. Amika Perk Up Dry Shampoo 159g
10. Mad Hippie Sunscreen 63g
11. Ulta Eyeshadow Primer 13g
12. Drunk Elephant A-Passioni Retinol 13g
13. Drunk Elephant Umbra Sunscreen 15g
14. Smashbox Highlighter Trio (I haven't decided which one I want to pan, but I'm only trying for one pan.)
15. Naked 1 Palette - Smog
16. Vera Mona Eyeshadow - Clover
17. Fresh Sugar Hydrating Lip Balm
18. ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter - Monster
19. Boscia Pore Pudding Mask
20. 6 FS/DS mascaras (trying to rotate through one every 2-3 months.)

I took weighted measurements on the things I can't necessarily measure progress by just eyeballing, and here are pictures of where I'm at with the other products:

IMG_20200105_050817.jpgIMG_20200105_051056.jpgIMG_20200105_051226.jpgIMG_20200105_052212.jpg

(I marked a line on the candle as well, just didn't get a picture of it.)

I haven't decided if I will hold myself to monthly check ins (probably smart, but sometimes I get overwhelmed trying to post pictures on here). At the very least, I would like to check in quarterly. Last year, I chose quite a few brand new/full products that took a lot of effort to make a dent in, which I think caused some discouragement, so I tried to pick more things I have already made some progress on for this round.

In addition to these larger items, I have a goal to use up 20 samples/foils/products a month. I haven't made specific plans on things, kind of seeing where the wind takes me on those. I hope to be posting those in the use your foils thread monthly.

I hope everyone is off to a good start on goals for this year. May the panning faeries be with us all.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Looking forward to watching your progress @snoflakefaerie 💪
