Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

2021 Challenge located here: Pan It! - 2021 Challenge 🏆

It's time for a new decade, and a new Project Pan!

Before we dive into the details, I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me in another year of panning.  I cannot believe that this thread marks the 4th year of this challenge and how much it has grown over the years.  It's been a joy to witness so many of you participate and encourage others along the way.  For those of you thinking, "there's no way I can do that," think again!  We've all said that at one time or another, and some of the biggest skeptics have grown to take panning by storm.  Thank you all for your never ending inspiration 😘. Cheers to a new decade 🥂-Elle

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Love your 20 in 20 @snoflakefaerie !  That Amika Dry Shampoo is my favourite Dry Shampoo out there (that I've tried so far lol).

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@missjeanie That’s good to hear; I think I’ve tried it once but don’t have a recollection of my feelings. Excited to give it a real go.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I thought all month of January what I REALLY want to pan & I came up to the conclusion that I really want to work on my sample stash. I have it divided & organized into categories (peel/exfoliators, cleansers, moisturizers, masks, etc) & I have it in acrylic drawers. I would like to "pan" those drawers, aka see the bottom. 😊 I figured the best way is to take a pic of the drawer at the beginning of the month & then at the end. If I try something & absolutely hate it or its just meh...Im going to destash all of it that I have. If i like it, it may end up in my ok- to -travel with stash. I'll list all the "areas/drawers" that i want to work on (I'm not sure how many i have) but won't assign them to a month or anything, my skin is picky might have to rearrange..🤦😊

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Fantastic Idea @sonnydee !  I just looked at how many DS and foils I have right now and decided to do a February Sample Challenge for myself.  Figured I could use up some items and find out what I like/love before the spring sale!  I'm so excited for you to work through your drawers.

thats what made me want to pan my stash but itll probably...

thats what made me want to pan my stash but itll probably take me all year @missjeanie good luck to you for February!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@sonnydee, I love your project pan!!! <333 I also love how you've organized your samples. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress through the year! 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thanks @itsfi ill probably take a pic of the "set up" but not so much each individual drawer, that would be alot of pics! 😉 I'll take a pic of the specific drawer I'm working on at the beginning of the month...

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I love this and am trying to do something similar. I find since my skin is picky, too, I can't just go head first in to trying foil after foil, rotating through product. But I do want to at least be diligent about going through my samples on a regular basis. It isn't hard to do one skin care, one hair care, one body care, one makeup at a time while evaluating what works and destashing what sucks.

I have also separated my samples in to separate containers, though I'm trying to reuse boxes from sub boxes and Sephora favorites sets instead of buying something to organize them in.

The far left box is full of nail polishes, that I need to find a better way/place to store. The far left box is full of nail polishes, that I need to find a better way/place to store.

So this is my current set up (just skin care, my makeup samples are all in Ipsy bags on a different shelf). My goal is to have all skin care samples be from 2019 or later and fit in their boxes comfortably, including full size products from sub boxes.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

very nice & colorful!😍 @snoflakefaerie I used to have them divided into ipsy bags, vs boxes, etc. my stash outgrew them😥. I want to be able to use the acrylics for makeup (that was my way of thinking when I bought them & a quick & easy way to get to it) & not so much samples. I got chevron organizers sized 11"× 5.5" x 5.5" (kept getting error message for a screenshot)from Amazon for my nail polish collection,  That size was easier to find back when & I got eggplant for my darker shades & light teal for my lighter shades. worked out great. if you can find them...😞

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I hear you on outgrowing storage options @sonnydee. I need to put in some serious effort to avoid that, because I’m already there with hair products and getting really close with skincare. If you can get the screenshot to work, I would love to see the organizers you are talking about!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@snoflakefaerie, your stash is beautifully and creatively organized - love how you've re-purposed all those fun boxes.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thanks @itsfi. I go back and forth between wishing they were all uniform and enjoying the eclectic organization. I do love how colorful things are and having them in these boxes helps because I know when the box is full I really need to focus on using what's in there.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I understand that going back and forth on the containers @snoflakefaerie. I like how the boxes add pops of color. That’s a great point too about knowing it’s time to use up some things when the box is full.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@sonnydee I was also determined to use up my sample stash from so many GWP I accumulated. I began last September and categorized them by putting them in large zip lock bags with labels for eye serums, face serums, etc. I took pics and remembered the ones I liked for future purchase. It took me almost three months to go through all of it!! I still have some but switched now to my pricier skin care from Joanna Vargas that was also new and I had put on hold to finish up my sample stash. My skin is relieved all that testing is done. Good luck with using your stash up!!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@Anonymous you give me hope! I'm hoping by the end of the year all my samples are only taking up 1 or 3 😉of my acrylics.b7dbdf7f538720935689e60c070112b3.420x285x18.gif

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

just popping in to wish everyone a great start to a new panning year!! @ElleElleG thanks for another year hosting this thread!

i have decided not to start my panning year until february.  i've given myself january to figure out what i want to pan and start my focus for this  year.  i know i want to do another rolling project so that will be coming in february once i figure out what i want to start with.  i also think i want to cycle through some products on a monthly basis - i'm pretty sure i'm going to start with shadows and lipsticks - to see what i want to keep and what i'm no longer in love with.  i have way more makeup than one human actually needs and a lot of it that i'm no longer using or really have never used.  i want to spend this year playing with what i have and deciding what to keep and what to pass on.  not sure how people feel about me posting the monthly cycle stuff on here since its not actually panning but my rolling will show up soon!!

happy 2020 panning people!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Excited to see what item(s) you select @sparklekai !

And of course you’re more than welcome to share your monthly selections!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@sparklekai personally, I look at this panning thing as more of a "use your stuff" motivator than definitely using up one thing or another. I realize other people may feel differently, but I like to see what people chose to keep or get rid of after making a concerted effort to use it for a period of time. I think that's in the spirit of the panning.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Congrats @xcicee. I have never hit pan on a powder hightlighter, so I find this very impressive!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thank you!! It took so long I gave up the first time I did it. I repressed my FS Champagne Pop which looks to have 1/3 of product in it and I still think hitting pan will be really difficult...I put on the same amount as Moonstone my first day using it again and it was way too blinding. I'm trying to hit pan now only using one light press for each cheek which feels impossible!
