Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Hey beauty lovers!

Lately I’ve been rebuilding my routine while staying within budget—and honestly, it’s been a fun challenge. I’d love to know:

What’s one beauty product (skincare or makeup) under $25 that totally changed the game for you?

I’ll go first: The Ordinary Niacinamide” or “Sephora Collection Lip Stain. Affordable AND delivers real results.

Let’s help each other glow without going broke!

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera  A long list is forming in my head, but I’ll try to whittle it down here.

Skincare:

Good Light Taste of Space Lip Milk - a lip treatment made of hydrating and antioxidant ingredients. Since it helps keep my dry lips very happy, it’s part of my PM skincare routine. I like to top it with the next item on this list.

Aquaphor Healing Ointment - this petrolatum-based balm is my multipurpose hero. It’s my daily lip balm/mask, wound protector & healing helper, occasional eye cream (when my undereye skin’s excessively dry), full face buffer against frigid windburn weather each winter, foot cream, and barrier to protect parts of my face (lips & eyes) while I apply fairly strong exfoliants. I also sometimes use Aquaphor as a makeup mixing medium, especially when creating custom lipstick shades with Danessa Myricks Colorfix.

Peach Slices Redness Relief Azelaic Acid Serum - the cheaper of the two 10% azelaic acid serums I alternate nightly. (I use a 15% azelaic acid serum in the morning that costs more than $25.) Contains azelaic acid and centella asiatica, two of my skin’s favorite redness reducers, plus soothing allantoin and panthenol. It has a lightweight lotion texture my skin drinks up, and it doesn’t pill under my retinaldehyde serum.

The Ordinary Multi-Peptide + HA Serum for Facial Wrinkles  (formerly known as “Buffet”) - my favorite full face hydrating serum. It’s loaded with great hydrating ingredients for my mostly-dry combo “mature” skin. I’d also list the copper peptides version of this serum (my twice-daily eye serum) if it didn’t cost more than $25.

The INKEY List Oat Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm 5 oz/ 150 mL  - not only does it effectively remove my makeup (including eye makeup) and sunscreen, it saves my skin whenever I have a bad reaction or irritation flare. I apply it, let it sit 5-10 minutes as a soothing oat balm, then massage it a bit with wet hands before applying my usual PM cleanser right over it. Then I just rinse everything off at the same time. When my face is painfully irritated, I’d never be able to wash it (without a lotta pain & increased irritation) without using this balm. And it never leaves my skin feeling dry or stripped. In fact, it makes my skin feel very soft.

COSRX Low pH Niacinamide Micellar Cleansing Water - my favorite micellar water. When I don’t use TIL’s Oat Cleansing Balm, I use this instead. I really like using it in the morning since I rarely use a traditional cleanser in the AM. (Eh, I’m a PM shower person.) And I especially like using it in a foam dispenser bottle, so I can’t accidentally splash micellar water everywhere while trying to get it onto a reusable cotton round.

Makeup & tools:

Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix - Multi-Use Eye, Cheek & Lip Waterproof Liquid Pigment Iconic  (all shades; can’t tag product without randomly picking a shade) - I’m a longtime fan of these and wish Danessa hadn’t retired any of the older shades. (Now I’m nursing the heck outta my discontinued shades. 😅) These are truly multi-use: eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick, lip liner, blush, and I can even use ‘em as highlighters by sheering them out (with a mixing medium) or mixing them with certain blushes.

Phytosurgence Skin Spark Cream Blush - I’ve fallen deeply in love with these blushes, partly for their texture (neither dry nor overly emollient) but mostly for the nuanced shades. And I appreciate the brand founder for listing which shades have a low white base. Psst, Canadian friends: Phytosurgence is a Canadian brand!

Esum The Mascara - it’s $1 over the price cap but I’ll list it anyway because it’s that good. It won’t give a super dramatic falsies look. Instead, it gives my short straight lashes great definition, and it lifts and lengthens them. On me, it doesn’t flake or smudge everywhere (note: I only apply mascara to my top lashes), and it doesn’t irritate my eyes.

SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Crease Brush #19  - if I could buy only one eyeshadow brush and my cap was $25, I’d pick this one. It’s designed as a crease brush but can also lay down lid color and blend out corners/edges. It’s not as small as I’d like for getting into my tight inner corner space, but it can get color in there—just not in as targeted/detailed a way as I normally like. I originally got one of these brushes as a gift from Sephora in exchange for review. I liked it so much, I bought 2 more with my own money.

By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder 8HA (translucent loose version) - the $23 mini jar lasts a looong time because the teeniest tiniest amount of this powder is all you need to set anything. This has been my rockstar setting powder for a few years. It was reformulated a year or so ago to this “8HA” version, which works as well as the original. It never makes my skin look dried out and it locks my concealer down all day, even in sweltering humid weather. There’s also a pressed version of this powder that (for me) doesn’t work as well as the loose version unless I use more of it.

I’ll stop there, for now. Though I’ll also say: I save a lotta money by joining various brands & retailers’ reward programs. Most folks here in the US know about Ulta’s program; I’m always sitting on a mountain of hoarded points there. 🙃 I’ve gotten plenty of things for $0 OOP just by using my Ulta points. Ditto for Nordstrom’s Nordy Notes. (I’m also a Nordy cardmember, so I rack up Notes quickly.) E.l.f. fans: are you a member of their “Beauty Squad” reward program? Did you know you can buy e.l.f. products from any retailer, then upload your receipt to e.l.f.’s site and get reward points that way? And see, I didn’t even list any e.l.f. products on my list up there… maybe I’ll have to come back for a part 2 list.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Girl, 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣💕💕💕💕you just gave me homework — now I have to search for a whole makeup list! Thank you so much, I really appreciate it. I’m definitely adding everything to my Sephora shopping cart. Thank you for taking the time and explaining everything in such detail!

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera  Glad I could enable help! 😈 I just snuck an addition onto my makeup list: By Terry’s loose setting powder in the mini size. The full size is kinda pricey. The mini jar lasts me about as long as a full size jar/compact of some other brands’ setting powders, since I never bake my makeup and a tiny bit of By Terry’s powder is all I need.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

This is a fabulous thread idea. Let's help each other out!

The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% Oil Control Serum  is a small but mighty secret weapon, I love this one too and definitely the price @lunavera

Another great not too pricey product is Mario Badescu Seaweed Night Cream 1 oz / 28 g  it smells kinda crazy but it's an excellent night moisturizer for dry or aging skin. 👌👌

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Hello @lunavera  I am glad you asked this question and yes you can achieve certain looks with in expensive make up ..but some of the drugstore/ brands that are sold elsewhere can have the same pay off of colour or coverage ...  Sephora Collection is Sephora's In House budget friendly interpretations of the higher luxury brands . SEPHORA COLLECTION Sephora Colorful® Blush   is amazing and pigmented beautiful wash of color I use the shade Charmed it's really pretty . You can build it up it's a matte/satin formula . As far as foundation SEPHORA COLLECTION Best Skin Ever Liquid Foundation    these are only a couple of my recommendations.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Also totally forgot about Rare Beauty and minis, if you use the Sephora app, there's a category for this:

Most of the items in that category are affordable or minis of products.

If you're on your cell or laptop, you can search a similar term

A couple items I have really loved recently are part of the Sephora Collection: #SEPHORA COLLECTION Lift & Firm - Plumping Booster Serum with Bakuchiol 1.01 oz / 30 ml and SEPHORA COLLECTION Totally Juicy Lip Tint

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Great perspective @lunavera .  I'm going to play a little bit of devil's advocate in the Spoiler tag just because I also feel "splurges on a budget" can be done and I don't want to detract too much.

Affordable brands, some already mentioned;

Elf

Nyx

Inkey List

The Ordinary

Good Molecules

Sephora Collection

Maybelline/L'Oreal

Kaja

Lys

Ami Colé

Cheekbone Beauty (?, it's not here, but in Canada, but i hear they are worth it)

Spoiler
Splurges need to be well timed.  Often, direct sites offers deeper discounts, but you have to hit a shipping minimum.  I will stock up on Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Hydra Vizor Mineral SPF 30 Refillable Moisturizer , which is pricey, I wait for their friends and family sale, which is usually twice a year and build a cart with staples, sometimes site exclusive and items that were released but I'm willing to wait for.

Big purchases for  devices or hair tools or fragrance are timed to multipliers and constantly offered discounts, such as Black Friday or sampler sets before holidays (mother's day and Valentine's).  This also helps me stay at certain tiers, so I have access to rouge rewards or lower shipping thresholds.

Knowing what's truly site exclusive or willing to wait is another thing.  A lot of times, something is stated "exclusively" but it technically isn't 🤷🏽‍♀️.  If I know a Natasha Denona item is available at other retailers where I can use points, I can wait.  It doesn't mean I never get it from here, just that the wider the availability for something, the likelihood of getting it at a lower price point due to seasonal sales and loyalty programs.

Best example of this for me, DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster that I use all the time and lasts, I got it for $10 out of pocket.  I used a rouge reward and the foundation voucher from Sephora with the purchase + two new shade releases at the time for Rare Beauty by Selena Gomez Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter .  This was a backup to one I've owned.  I don't need to purchase this again until probably a year, or if i suspect a reformulation is happening.  I can use this product for foundation, highlight and a base.  Dior also had it for awhile to sample, so we have the samples for travel.  I know Elf Halo glow is a great dupe, but i can't travel with it, when my overtone changes, it doesn't fit as well, and I don't want to buy another shade of of it.

Check in on alternative sellers too, sometimes a pricey product is available at Costco, tjmaxx, fragrance.net or an outlet retailer.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

I love your take—totally agree! “Splurging on a budget” is such a vibe when you know the right brands to mix. And yesss to that list! Inkey List, Elf, and Good Molecules are absolute staples in my routine. I’ve heard great things about Cheekbone too—

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera Sephora employee here

Charlotte Tilbury Mini Hollywood Flawless Filter 2 Fair  I can put it under or over makeup or mix it into my sunscreen.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

Thank you so much! That tip is gold—I never thought to mix it with sunscreen! Definitely trying that with my next look. Appreciate the insider glow-up advice!

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera @SportyGirly125  Be careful about mixing things (ANYthing) into your sunscreen. I know Drunk Elephant, for instance, says you can mix any of their sunscreens together to create a custom shade. But in general, sunscreens are hard to formulate for adequate consistent UV protection. Anything you mix into a sunscreen will change its formulation, which can make a sunscreen less likely to coat your skin evenly enough to protect you.

If you don’t plan to be outdoors (or sitting/standing beside an uncovered window) much, the day’s UV index is low, &/or you’ll be wearing sunglasses, wide brimmed hat, staying in shade outside, etc., then it might be less of a problem if you mix something into your sunscreen. Just be aware that mixing stuff in can reduce efficacy of the sunscreen.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@WinglessOne I don’t put a lot when I mix it. It’s more sunscreen. Nothing has happened when I have done it but that’s just me.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera  great idea for a thread! For skincare, one of my favorites (I use it every night) that's also pretty inexpensive is Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum. For makeup, a real game-changer for me has been Milani Supercharged Dewy Skin Primer - I've gotten so many compliments on my base since I started using this! My favorite mascara is actually also by Milani - Milani Highly Rated Anti-Gravity Mascara.

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

I actually tried the Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum too—and I love it! I have the whole kit with the cleanser and eye serum. My skin feels so clean and calm—it’s definitely a new fave in my routine! I also use it before my makeup, and it gives me such a nice glow. Thanks for the Milani primer tip—I’m adding that to my next haul!

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

@lunavera love this thread!! I really like the physicians formula serums and The Ordinary Matrixyl* 10% + HA 1 oz/ 30 mL

Re: Glow-Up on a Budget: What’s Your Secret Weapon Under $25?

thank you so much! I’ve heard great things about Matrixyl—definitely adding it to my next haul. And yesss, Physicians Formula has some underrated gems too! Appreciate the recs!
