I'm an insomniac who usually has to take pills to sleep. But the rare times I get a good night sleep is from working my butt off during the day.
My best sleep advice is:
1. Stop drinking water 2 hours before bed so you don't interrupt your sleep getting up to use the bathroom
2. Shut of your tv, phone and any other electronic devices 1 hour before bed to wind down your brain.
3. Do a great skincare routine to repair and rejuvenate your skin for the next day. Never sleep with makeup on!
4. Write in your journal or planner about your intentions for the next day
I've tried every supplement I can think of. Nothing really helps as much as I wish, but aromatherapy helps me drift off to sleep more peacefully. I currently use Le Labo room sprays, and plan to invest in REN CLEAN SKINCARE - And Now to Sleep Pillow Spray as soon as I run out!
I'm all about routine. Shower, put on pj's and put book in bedroom.
Take the dog outside for one last trip, in the winter, the cold lowers my body temperature which helps induce sleep. Since I do a lot of physical labor, I don't worry much about falling asleep. If for some reason I wasn't outside working during the day, I make sure to schedule a run in the late afternoon so I'm tired. Pick up book, start reading, fall asleep with book on head. lol
My best beauty sleep tip is to ideally stop scrolling on my phone at least 30 minutes before I'm ready to snuggle in my bed to reduce the impact of blue light on my sleep quality. Instead, I'll pick up a physical book that I read a bit every night leisurely and read a few chapters until I feel sleepy!
Sleep on silk pillowcases for frizz free hair!
My sleep routine is cleanse, tone, moisturize my face. use a great lip mask, either Laneige or Bite, and than have the heat set low and snuggle into my bed with an audio book/ podcast playing and I am asleep within 10 minutes usually.
I get plenty of exercise so I'm ready to sleep.
I love spraying my pillow and/or blankets with perfume before going to sleep. I'll use different scents depending on my mood but it's so calming and relaxing to fall asleep with a pleasant scent all around me.
This is how I wind down 3-5 nights a week (depending on how my knee and hip feel that night):
Strength training and stretches
Daytime is for cardio and HIIT, which usually energize me. Sometimes a 15-20 minute run helps me wind down at night, but not often. Strength training and stretches are what really do the trick at night: slower, more mindful movements, combined with relaxing music. Warrior 3 pose with a kettlebell or dumbbell is like an extended single leg deadlift, both of which help me relax for some reason.
Other things that help me sleep:
- No persistent clockface staring me down in the bedroom. If I have to tap something to see the time, I’m less likely to check every 15 minutes.
- A sleep sounds app on my phone + portable Bluetooth speaker, for nights when anxiety-induced insomnia hits hard.
- Cedarwood is my lavender, so I keep a couple of cedar planks beside the bed. I resand them as needed to refresh the smell. Real cedar planks work better (for me) than cedar-scented room diffusers.
- A warm moisturizing bath + a small pot of low-caffeine tea (or a glass of red wine, or mulled wine) + a book I’ve already read. Can’t be a new-to-me book, otherwise my brain gets locked into “what happens next” mode all night. 😂 I don’t take baths every night, but when I do, they help me de-stress.
- I need a slightly cool room, not a cold room. If my nose and fingers are cold while I’m in bed, I can’t sleep.
- In the winter, I wear socks to bed because sometimes my feet get very cold, even if my hands/nose don’t. They must be warm and soft, with an “invisible” toe seam I can’t feel. Also cannot feel too binding around my ankles. Also must stay on my feet all night, so no low rise/“no show” socks. Also, hi there, I’m kinda quirky.
While I’m thinking of sleep: the best sleep of my life (that I can remember) happened on a cruise ship 15 years ago. The memory foam mattress topper (not too thick, not too thin) and the way that ship rolled... it rocked me to sleep each night. If someone invents a grownup bed that mimics a large ship’s rolling/rocking movement, I’ll buy it!
I love to curl up with a warm beverage and watch a bit of mindless tv (like travel shows etc. something that's light and doesnt getthwe brain going too much) to destress and clear my mind before bed.
My advice is to drink a warm cup of tea or milk an hour before sleep, so that way it relaxes you and you still have time to go to the bathroom
My best sleep advice is to grab a good book & a sheet mask, and a cuddly blanket of course! best way to end the day 🙂
I think the best advice would be to find something that helps you relax and stick to it, whether it is a comfy pair of pajamas, a nightly mask, or a bath before bed. You can't go wrong if it works well for you!
