Monthly Manicure Challenge 2024

Welcome to the Monthly Manicure Challenge! There’s a lot of great manicure ideas and inspiration here on BIC. I find challenges are a great way to channel that inspiration, push me out of my comfort zone, and try new styles or colours I wouldn’t normally go for. It’s a great way to grow in skill and artistry. I hope you’ll join me on this journey.

All are welcome, whether you’re a pro or a novice like me, or if you have a favourite manicurist that is the only one you trust with your hands. You’re welcome to post as often or as little as you like, post late, or skip challenges completely. And feel free to post them on Show Me Your Nails 2.0 too!

April 2024 - April Showers

I’m sure we all know how the idiom goes: “April showers bring May flowers.” So let’s see your water themed manicures this month!

And it doesn’t have to be typical blues for water either. Feel free to try techniques that involve water in some way! Hydrodipping, water marbling, droplet effects, etc… Feel free to try any of these and show us the results!

I’ve been a part of BIC for a while now. I’ve seen makeup, skincare, and photography challenges, which have been great for giving me inspiration, but nothing for mani’s. I love Makeup Challenge of the Week 2021/2022/2023 because it’s given me lots of inspiration, pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped me grow in my skills and artistry. I’d probably be stuck doing the same looks if it weren’t for that. I know we have Show Me Your Nails 2.0 which has been a great source of inspiration. I don’t want to take away from it but rather give myself and others a way to narrow down all the great ideas from it and get outside of my comfort zone (which has been bright colours and sparkly toppers lately)

Would there be any interest in starting a challenge for mani’s? We could have a different theme every month or even twice a month so that people can wear their mani’s out without worrying about missing one. People could always revisit themes if they miss them but still want to participate. I’m happy to organize it and if people have ideas for themes, I’m happy to work them in. What do you all think? Let me know if we should go one or twice a month and any themes you might want to see.

Christmas mani! In my typical fashion, both hands are different but still come together to make a cohesive set. 

My original plan was to do a plaid accent on top of white. I laid down the stripes a bit to far from each other but it looked fine. The problems began as soon as I tried to put a QDTC. The brush pulled streaks everywhere. I wiped it off and kept them solid colours with glitter instead. I have a few ideas of how to improve if I ever try again. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know!

Overall, I’m happy with how festive these look. I even got a compliment yesterday at a winter festival from one of the employees who was dressed as a candy cane (“candy-liscious” is what she said to me)

I’m so sad I’m seeing this the last month of the year🥲❤️ my head told me it’s too late to join but I just knew I had too! I’ve never been into badazzled nails😅😅😅 but I decided to try some festive  ones very simplistic but wow are these glossy! I didn’t have a lot of holiday colors so I just did red I decided to try the LA colors $1 base and top coat and wow it’s a glossy girl! Love these nails! I definitely will be joining this in the new year!❤️💚🎄❤️ Merry Christmas and Happy holidays!

Blue and white winter wonderland mani! It’s hard to capture the subtleness of the bar glitter. I tried indirect light, flash, but I couldn’t quite capture it. A special shout out to @RGbrown for inspiring me to give bar glitter another try.

December 2023 - Happy Holidays: Christmas, Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, New Years!

Sephora Collection Color Hit Nail Polish L02 Under the Covers, 3 coats topped with 2 coats of Zoya Leia (thumb). Under the Covers is a very thin white demi creme. It's streaky on the first 2 coats, which is not an uncommon experience for me with white polishes but this one seemed extra streaky. A third is necessary for the slightest bit of opacity. This is from this year's SEPHORA COLLECTION Color Hit Nail Polish Set; the same shade was included in last year's set and was just as streaky. Le sigh. Zoya Leia is a pretty, sheer white with an opalescent finish, sprinkled with fuschia, green and gold sparkly flecks. 

Sephora Collection Color Hit Nail Polish L02 Under the Covers, 4 coats (index) - I considered adding a 5th and possibly 6th layer, but was concerned it might look too thick at that point.

Sephora Collection Color Hit Nail Polish L74 Engagement Ring, a beautiful silver metallic polish (middle). This is easy to apply, 2 coats is enough for opacity; I added a 3rd since most of the other base colors had at least 3 layers. This is a pretty shade, a little too thin to be used for nail art stamping, but I might give it a try if I'm feeling adventurous over the holidays.

Hearts & Promises Esmeralda (ring) is described as "a light, smokey violet crelly base with silver reflective glitter, gold flakes, turquoise metallic flakes, purple metallic flakes, and blue to purple micro flakes". It's such a pretty polish, on its own or as a topper. Easy peasy to apply, 3 coats. I picked this shade up as part of Hella Handmade Creations offerings for May, 2023.
