Undertone confusion!

For starters, I have no idea what my undertone is. All of the “indicators” (veins, colors I look best in, etc.) lean cool, but my Color IQ is 3y05. This is complicated by mild subtype 1 rosacea. When I look at myself, I feel that my face is considerably more pink than my neck/chest. So when I’m searching for a foundation, should I look for something more neutral/warm so there’s a better match between my face and body, or would that be disastrous? Photo taken this afternoon, no foundation, just undereye concealer and a light dusting of mineral powder to counteract the redness.

Re: Undertone confusion!

Hi @tastelikewater Did you try any of the 3y05 shades on your skin? Your skin looks very similar to mine and I'm 2r03. The best thing to do is try a warm, neutral and cool shade from your jawline down to your neck and see which looks the most neutral. On my skin(I have a cool undertone and surface redness), the cool shade will always look more neutral and will tone down my surface redness.

Re: Undertone confusion!

I'm the same way, I have a "yellow" reading at sephora but a lot of those tests about undertone say cool or neutral. I'm not going to try to say what your undertone is (I'm not good at that myself, I don't even understand what people mean when they say "look for the color *under* your skin," wft) but I have ZERO faith in the color IQ. My readings are 4Y02 and 2R03. I spoke to a makeup artist at the Chanel counter who just looked at me and said "you're pink" and she got me an amazing foundation that matches so well that you can't tell I'm wearing it even though I don't use it on my forehead.

I do know that your face should match your neck. I highly recommend watching Lisa Eldridge's videos about foundation, what it's for and what it's not for, how to really look at yourself, how to learn the right color for you, etc. I still don't understand the undertone thing but at least I know what I can expect a good foundation in the right color to do for me. (Not turn me yellow, for starters) (thanks Sephora)
