The Ability to Apply Makeup

Why do I seem so "makeup challenged" sometimes. I cannot never apply it like it is applied by the professionals at the makeup counter. They teach me to apply, but I can just never seem to get it exactly like they do. Does anybody else feel this way? Sometimes, I think i was just not born with talent to apply it exactly right. I will say that it takes me sooo much longer than they take at the counter. It is never as good, but is worth the extra effort on my part to get it wearable. Any suggestions would be welcomed because sometimes I just feel a bit frustrated with my makeup skills. Thanks.

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@HusbandsWifey one thing you don't have that a makeup artist does when they do your makeup is perspective. They can see your face in from different angles with fresh eyes and apply product differently because of that. The same way it's hard to give yourself a blowout that's as good at the salon, no matter if you have the same equipment.

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@makeitup305 that's very true. I always joke that when I buy the same stuff my stylist used that it's going to be exactly the same.  It can't be that the practice/years and expertise that makes the difference 🤣  I think having the expectation of doing what they do is always off.  Meaning even a new stylist has done 5-10 clients vs your own self practice.

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@danielledanielle It's also the angle, the ability to keep tension, etc. Same with makeup. When we do our own makeup we hold brushes much closer and probably tighter, we lean in closer to the mirror, we have different lighting... We're also used to seeing our own face we lose objectivity, so we maybe try to emphasize or disguise parts of our face a MUA  might otherwise not.

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@HusbandsWifey - It takes practice!  What has helped me is participating in the various challenges here in BIC like Cheek Challenge Fall 2025: Feed Me, Slay More

I have no clue what some of the looks are that are suggested for a particular week.  I either look them up on Google or ask the thread host, @danielledanielle .

The point is to play and have fun.  Your skills will develop. 💞

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

💯 @Titian06 , best thing is really just to play with your makeup, whether that's practicing a technique or a style you saw.

I'm going to try to composite different technique threads if you're interested @HusbandsWifey .  I've been meaning to do so.

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

Thanks, @danielledanielle !  My mind went blank and I could remember the other threads I was trying to think of. 🤣

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@HusbandsWifey , They Actually Have #ADedicatedGroupForAllThat 😉

Re: The Ability to Apply Makeup

@HusbandsWifey @Just keep practicing. The more you practice the better you will get. Also maybe focus on one thing at a time like eyeshadow then lips, etc so you don’t get overwhelmed.
