Does anyone else have trouble finding a foundation/concealer that matches their skin color?

I’ve been struggling with this for years. Getting “color matched” so many times and going home with a product that simply isn’t my skin color. I have a bit of rosacea and I am mixed. My face is darker than my neck and other parts of my body are lighter or darker depending on where you are looking. I just want a concealer that covers my dark circles, but doesn’t scream, “Hey, look at me. I don’t match the rest of the face!” For me, personally, I don’t like wearing a full face of foundation everyday. I would be so happy if I could just find a decent concealer that matched my skin color. Any advice on how to do this? I don’t want to throw away my love of makeup because of something so small and dumb! Also, if you took the time to ready my whiney rant and cry for help, thank you so much! 🙂

Ugh @jbabyvalentino totally hear you!!
I’m super pale and on the cool side but im not pink..everyone tries to make me pinker!
I find if you are in a store, it can look completely different vs natural lighting. If you are okay (hygiene wise) asking for samples, I would do that and take them home. I sometimes find my best matches sitting in my car in the day light.
If you use a lot of skincare with SPF, make sure you always apply to your neck also (may be the reason for not matching).

@jbabyvalentino @I love mixing foundations and concealers for my custom shade. I have 2 concealer colors and 4 foundation colors to mix from.

aw I honestly I completely understand where you're coming from! I can't find my shade of foundation in a lot of brands which kind of sucks but at the same time you start to learn more about what works for you and what doesn't. I can't get matched either because my shade is always wrong so I started doing it myself by doing some research online like what kind of undertone I have and so on. Fenty Beauty and Laura Mercier are the only 2 brands where I have been able to find my perfect match. Sometimes you may even have to mix foundations to find your perfect match. For example right now I'm mixing my summer and winter shade to get my current match since I'm loosing my summer tan but I'm not 100% my winter shade. Don't give up! For concealer I've liked going 1-2 shades lighter so it looks brighter but not bam I have concealer on. I've been really enjoying the new bo-ing concealer from benefit. I use the shade 5 and it works great. I also love the Estee Lauder Double Wear stay-in-place concealer in the shade light medium warm. Don't be shy to go into the store and do some swatches!! Keep trying love don't give up! @jbabyvalentino

Thank you for your answer and recommendations! I do love the Fenty makeup line. Their Pro Filter Matte HD foundation is my go-to. I think it’s great that they have many shades! Especially for women and men of color, but I tend to get overwhelmed though by how many different colors they have. It’s like AHHHHH which one should I choose! But I will definitely try your advice! Thank you for being so nice and informative! 🙂

Hi baby doll!! First may I say NEVER give up on make up!!! It’s allllll love hun! So I’m mixed black and Japanese, but have moles and freckles on my face that none of my model gorgeous sisters have. (-__-) *envy.. It’s hard to see ur skin ur profile pic is small but u look like a medium tan to medium dark with warm undertones?... Everyone struggles to find their perfect match foundation, so don’t think you are alone. Finding your perfect color is part of the joy and mystery of make up! So few tips I can share as I feel like we may have similar skin tones. Sometimes the perfect color for u , may not be available in the brand you are looking at. Example: I actually love the way urban decay all-nighter foundation covers and looks, but from the medium to dark tones they all get way too orange and look more like fake sunless tanner than foundation! Lol! So for me they simply don’t have my color in that line! As a person with a lot of hyperpigmentation, I recommend looking at the skin right below your eyelids, and match your foundation to that. *(see pics below) Even if the foundation seems a little off, that area will provide you, your most natural match. You can always lighten up under ur eyes with concealer, and darken your forehead and cheek bones with bronzer and contour with highlights to make the foundation blend more naturally with your complexion, even if it’s slightly off! *the wonders of make up!! *(I know u said u don’t want to do full foundation face, but there are cc creams and even powders (like bare minerals <-awesome stuff) which can give you great coverage without feeling heavy and create a perfect even base!! Another friendly tip, don’t swatch on your hands/arms, they are usually way darker than your face!... If u can view ur swatch in natural sunlight, as most stores lighting fixtures will lie to u!!! Soooo many times I thought I had the perfect match in the store, only to get home and find it’s completely the wrong color!! Sunlight don’t lie like them fluorescents! Lol!! If u find the right type/shades of foundation u may not need concealer at all.. and vise versa. Tarte, Estée Lauder, Lancôme, L.A. Girl, Nyx, even CoverGirl, and Maybelline have huge ranges of colors and tones u can mix/match from. Don’t be afraid to mix ur own custom color or to combine brands! It’s really the only way u will find ur perfect match! Create it! 😉 I truly hope this helps! And don’t give up! There is an entire community out here that will help you showcase the inner beauty u possess, on the outside for the whole world to see!! ❤️

Omg this is the sweetest and most informative response I’ve ever gotten! You’re right. Makeup is too fun to give up just because I’m throwing a tantrum over something as small as a shade match. I will definitely take into consideration your recommendations. By the way, you are GORGEOUS and your makeup is flawless! I did mention that I kind of wanted to not really incorporate a full face of foundation to my face unless it’s a very special occasion... I find that a full face of foundation, especially where I live (Louisiana) where it is hot and humid tends to either melt off or end up looking cakey even if I bake because of the humidity. As for an everyday casual look, you mentioned CC creams and powders and such. Could you recommend any products off the top of your head? Again, thank you so much for your kind and informative response! ... The first photo of me is me with only Too Faced Born This Way Concealer, Milani highlighter, no bake, Kat Von D contour around the cheek bones and forehead, as well as jawline, one Morphe shade of eyeshadow, with Wet N Wild pencil eyeliner. No foundation. This is the closest I’ve gotten to a “natural” look that matches me pretty well. But if you come up to me in person, you can tell there is a slight time difference which makes me self conscious. The second photo is me with no makeup whatsoever.

It's not unusual to mix shades, think of art/paint. Not everyone fits neatly inside predetermined shades. You may need to color correct first, to bring the colors to a similar tone. A light dusting of bronzer everywhere, face to neck, can also even the color.

I’m definitely going to consider that! I’ve just been a little afraid to, I guess? Thank you for answering my question! 🙂
