I need a good red lipstick recommendation, could anyone help?

I am fair skinned, with freckles. I tried the matte gloss, it was hard to apply, and moved everywhere! So, I think I will use a lip stick this time, I liked Bawse, but it was a shade too bright for me. Is there anyone who could recommend a good lipstick for me?

The pictures online are very hard to judge. I would just like a red that isn't as bold bright wise as Bawse, maybe a shade deeper (which I thought it appeared to be online).

Thanks so much! 🙂

Marc Jacobs has very good lipsticks.  Matte but luscious looking!  This lovely blogger did all the swatches so I am attaching her photos of 6 reds.  I have 4 MJ reds and LOVE them all.  (also, shall be able to test in-store)

Hi @Sgirlmakeup,

You may also like Kat Von D's Nahz Fur Atoo. It's a darker red than Bawse and a lot of people (including myself!) like her formula.

You may also like Bite Beauty's Matte Creme Lip Crayon in Red Velvet. It's a deep, rich red so that may also be something you like. (:

XOXO,
Marieke

Re: I need a good red lipstick recommendation, could anyone help?

Thank you ladies!! I'm going to check out these colors that you suggested now. I need to get it today, for an event this weekend.

It was Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid lipstick in Bawse! - I did let it dry, but in my opinion after eating/drinking, it became very splotchy, and I would rather have it come off than look like that again. I am looking for a traditional lipstick this time.

-Matte is preferable, I'm not against slightly creamy, or low shine.

-I am sure I'm looking for a cooler tone this time

-Budget: as long as it's classic, I don't mind splurging, I would like to buy today actually

Still a red, not quite fully berry- is what I'm looking for. Thank you so much, as I said I'll be checking out your suggestions now! It's very hard to shop for lipsticks online, and I do love Bawse, I just wish it was a tad less bright.

Re: I need a good red lipstick recommendation, could anyone help?

You're welcome!

I'm sure you'll have a ball swatching and testing colors when you get to make it into stores :).

Liquid lipsticks do have a tendency to break down some during eating and drinking, especially if what you're consuming to be a touch oily or greasy. I've found that the Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick formulas do apply well over themselves should you need to touch up without getting unbearably crusty or uncomfortable feeling on lips which is rare for liquid lipstick formulas as once they begin tow ear down or break apart on lips your best bet is to try and remove it all and start back from square one.

The Smashbox matte and Besame matte formulas wear really nice and creamy on lips! And to help a traditional lipstick last longer, line and fill lips in with a red liner to provide a nice, saturated base of color for the lipstick formula to better adhere too. This way, should the lipstick itself begin to absorb down or fade, you're still left with that layer of liner to provide color for a pristine red lip look.

@Sgirlmakeup I agree with @lylysa's helpful tips! And based on your response, I will add that Besame's Cherry Red might also work for you! It's on the darker side, so just make sure it isn't too dark for what you're looking for.

Re: I need a good red lipstick recommendation, could anyone help?

Hi @Sgirlmakeup

Red lipstick is my favourite shade to wear, and it sounds like I have similar colouring to use (I'm also fair with freckles).

I'm assuming you're referring to the Smashbox Always On Matte Liquid lipstick in Bawse? I'm not aware of a gloss called Bosse. Most liquid lipsticks require a few minutes to completely dry before they won't transfer, whereas an actual gloss will never fully dry down.

I'll share with you some of my personal favourites, but it will also help if you can provide us with a bit more information as to exactly what you're are looking for; do you prefer matte or a bit of shine/creaminess to the lipstick? Are you looking for a red that is more warm toned or cool toned? Do you have a budget for the lipstick?

As for my personal recommendations:

  • Besame makes some of my favourite red lipsticks. The price is reasonable, the vintage-style bullet is nice, they have a great range of reds, and the formula is comfortable (not too matte, so it will transfer, but it is creamy to wear and very pigmented. Leaves a bit of a stain behind)

My suggestion would be Red Velvet - it's a super flattering neutral red, that's somewhat deeper so it isn't overly bright.

You could also try Besame Red or American Beauty. I have swatches of Besame here:

Besame also makes little matches of the lipstick so you can try the shade

Tom Ford matte colour in Flame is also gorgeous - it's a brighter, warmer red (leans slightly orange) but it really looks amazing on and is comfortable to wear for a matte lipstick.

This one isn't available from Sephora, but I love Charlotte Tilbury's lipsticks. I'd suggest Red Carpet Red (matte) or So Marilyn (cream) for a deeper red.

I have a swatch of Red Carpet Red here:

Re: I need a good red lipstick recommendation, could anyone help?

Hi, Sgirlmakeup!

For reference and to compare to other shades, here's an image of Bawse:

If you enjoyed the shade Bawse is Smashbox's Always On Liquid Lipstick collection, but didn't find that the formula suited your preferences and wanted to explore something a tad darker, try Made it Matte in their Be Legendary Matte Lipstick line up:

Made it is definitely a nice departure from the more classic, true red shades, which Bawse fits into, but still allows for a very classy and striking look.

Another shade shown above is Unzipped, which is carried on Smashbox's website direct and is a matte red. It's not as intense as Bawse and it's also not as dark as Made It. So if you're looking for merely a deeper tone that still closely resembles Bawse without getting into the more blood red or brick red tones such as Made It, Unzipped may be a color to check out. Here's another image of it, you can see it's a bit more muted and not as bright as how Bawse comes across.

If you're even open to a more raspberry-based red that is still deeper in tone than Bawse, try Jam It On:

Let us know if from these suggestions you may be leaning toward one or more tones within the red family or if you're even wanting to try out a creamy, satin, or shimmer lipstick formula.

This is such an awesome post, thank you, thank you. I see some colors I love! I might have to try two of them! 🙂
