returning unused items w receipt- customer support

My husband returned some items that he bought in-store for me as a gift, but I did not want them.  I told him that he would have no problems returning them as he had the original receipt, none of the products had been opened and returned within 5 days of the purchase.  He told me that the transaction was quite unpleasant for him:  the salesperson opened all the packages, checked that the plastic seals were not broken, brought over another salesperson, etc.  It took him a lot longer than he expected.  I have never returned a product before at Sephora, but I read your return policy which is generous with opened and used products.
