Why are the birthday gifts on back order? Across Canada?!

It’s my birthday in November and I went to claim my free gift like every year, and I’ve been told at 2 different stores that they are out of stock of everything.  I’ve never heard of that.  One employee said it was across Canada!  What’s going on? I don’t want points, I’ve got enough of those, out of sight out of mind.  Is the B.C. port strike to blame

Ok, but…that requires one to make a purchase? Claiming the birthday gift doesn’t require that in-store.  And even if you pick something online with an order, it’s not guaranteed you will get what you asked for.  Why are the birthday gifts on back-order? According to what one staffer told me?
