Products with Carmine, categorized as cruelty-free and vegan?

There are items at Sephora which appear to be mis-categorized, labeled as vegan and cruelty-free yet contain Carmine (aka CI 75470). Carmine is from the insect “Dactylopius coccus, of the Coccidae family, cactus-eating insects native to tropical and subtropical America. Cochineal is used to produce scarlet, crimson, orange, and other tints and to prepare pigments such as lake and carmine (qq.v.).”

An example, the Natasha Denona Mini Zendo Eyeshadow Palette ingredient callouts as “vegan and cruelty-free”.

Sephora, please remove the vegan and cruelty-free callouts from products with Carmine, it may only be an insect, but it needs to be killed for these products, which does not fall under the definition of vegan or cruelty free.

HI @regenemax,

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. I will forward this to the appropriate department within our organization so they can look into this further and handle it accordingly!

Always,

Danee
