Gift card scam.. help!

I purchased two $50 Sephora Gift Cards last month to gift to two friends, and when they tried to use them they were told that the gift card balance was $0 and had been used up already. When they reached out to Sephora Customer Support, they found out that the gift card was used under an unknown name. Can I get a refund for these two gift cards (total of $100)? I can’t believe gift card scams were this common!!
