my hair just refuses to curl any farther up than a few inches, it just stays straght and i don't know what to do

What products do you use to wash and style? Do you air dry or diffuse?

Mine does this when I wear it up too often (and since I cover my hair that's most of the time now).  Being stretched into a pony tail or what not, especially when wet, can destroy loose curls.  naturallycurly.com used to have very active message boards its been a while since I've been on there.  They had several tricks I used (before covering) like ways to dry your hair for maximum curl, and product suggestions depending on your curl pattern.  Might be worth checking out to see if it's still active.

Has this always happened to you or just recently?

Sometimes my hair will do that if I need a trim, it gets too heavy to curl all the way up.  I have long hair now and have almost no curl at all.

Other times if I have overdone it with products and I need a deep cleaning it happens too. The weight of the products you use could be a problem.
