Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

It's 2025 and we're on YEAR EIGHT (8) of the Pan It! Challenge 🍾

ElleElleG_0-1736241477220.gif

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Spoiler

For those of you who are interested in trying the challenge but fear you may not finish or move as quickly as others, remember:

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

I made a ton of progress this month and completed quite a few goals! I did about 42 use it's I think it was.

Use It- 210/333 Target 266
Pan It- 23/337 Target 33

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

42 uses last month? That's fantastic progress @Samtian; that's more than one use per day. Great job!

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

@itsfi Thank you! I really wanted to wrap up some categories so some days I had two different eyeliners on haha.

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

It was not all that long ago @Samtian when I was sheet masking twice a day because I was on a mission to use up all my sheet masks 😬, so if you want to go with 2 different eyeliners, have at it.  😆

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

November Update

Monthly Summary:

  • Finished one more project pan product this month 🙌 and it looks like another could be used up by the end of the year, or at least, very, very close to being panned by then. 😊

November All Stars:

  • The Typology Resurfacing Lip Peel is no more, for the best of reasons - I've used it up. Yaaay! This was probably the product I was most consistent with this pan it! challenge. I started off slow, using it once a week, at the beginning of the year but realized soon enough that it was gentle enough that I could use it twice a day, if so desired. I can actually tell the difference this made now that I've been without it for about a week or so. It will be repurchased but I'm waiting to see if it is included in the advent calendar which I'll start unboxing soon on Advent Calendars 2025 - I could look at the list of what's included but I want to be a little surprised, at least for a few days. 😅

  • I'm always reminded how much I love Cle de Peau The Foundation when I actually use it. A little goes a long way so to most, it will look like there's hardly a dent in the jar, but I've been making progress, slowly but surely on it.

Next Month's Focus:

My focus for December as far as the pan it! challenge goes will be primarily be to:

  • use up haruharu wonder Black Rice Bakuchiol Eye Cream - I am really so close. I'll need get out my trusty tube squeezer (I talked about more on the It's Tool Time - The BIC Beauty Edition thread) soon since we're getting down to the end and the design of this particular tube is such that the top or the dispensing agent (pump) attached to the tube cannot be removed by simply unscrewing it

  • finalize my picks for next year's pan it! challenge - I'm thinking about taking a slightly different approach than I have in past years 😬🤔

All done!!!All done!!!

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

@itsfi Woo congrats! I am excited to see what you decide on next year. I also am taking a different route and can't wait to see all the fun from everyone.

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

Happy Thanksgiving Eve Eve to all who celebrate! 🦃 DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE THE TURKEY OUT OF THE FREEZER AND DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES PUT FROZEN BIRDS IN THE DEEP FRYER

I don’t foresee any more empties in the next week, so here is the penultimate eviction notice for items on the Shelves of Shame:

BBW body lotion in Fireside Flurries: notes are toasted marshmallow, pink lavender, cashmere woods. Insert footage of Rose in Titanic hoarsely croaking “Come back” at the rescue ship. This was so lovely to get me in the mood for cozy, wintery weather—never mind that it was in the 50s yesterday. 11/10 would repurchase if it returned. Bonus points for the fact that this was my last BBW body lotion or cream manufactured in the year 2022 and now I can fully focus on my next oldest products from when I was in Pokémon mode in 2023–huzzah!

BBW body cream in Fall In Bloom: in case you forgot from the last time, notes are juicy plum, wild blooms and velvet moss. This is 1 of 2 in this scent that were gifted to me in the summer. Turns out this was popular with people visiting, so it had a lot of natural progress and I decided to officially finish it off. Nice enough perfumey scent but not one that I’d purchase again myself.

Laneige Cream Skin Toner & Moisturizer deluxe sample: very nice on its own or layered under more robust moisturizers. I was really happy to get a sample so I could be sure it would jive with my skin before I committed to buying a full size in the VIB sale and I think this will be fantastic year-round.

Summer Fridays Rich Cushion Ultra Plumping Moisturizer deluxe sample: conversely, I am also happy I got a sample of this because it turns out it does NOT jive with my skin. It kind of just sits there looking like I’ve got something smeared randomly on my face and doesn’t fully sink in unless I spend 25 minutes furiously rubbing it in. It could be that it doesn’t layer well with my other products, but that’s not going to work with my routine in the winter when my skin needs all the help.

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm: another one bites the dust. I still have two more. I hate the original beeswax formula with a passion because it always dries my lips out over time and it gives me that awful white ring (lip balm girlies know). Please don’t let me be gifted anymore from now on. Vanilla Bean is the most superior of all Burt’s Bees flavors and this is an indisputable fact.

Dove Advanced Care antiperspirant/deodorant in Restore: notes are sparkling red fruits and orange flower. It’s taken over a year to finally finish this, but I swear I use deodorant daily. It wasn’t my favorite formula and I don’t think it did anything to improve my pitties. It also did not stand up to summertime sweat like Dove Cool Essentials historically has. Would not repurchase, and don’t need to anyway because I still have THREE (!!!) more antiperspirant/deodorants PLUS THREE (!!!) plain/non-antiperspirant deodorants to go. Getting free stuff is good, but hot dang it still takes a long time to use up.

2025 Project Pan - November Update

I've joined BIC's Pan It! thread for the past 2 or 3 years now, but every year, my actual participation has been pretty sporadic - this year is no different 😅 I wanted to try to get back into working on my project for the rest of this year, revisiting and revising my original goals I set several months ago.

For my revised goals, I kept most of my original goals that were panning-related (e.g. "finish" or "hit pan", etc.), but dropped most of my original goals that were usage-related (e.g. "use all of my blushes at least once during the year" or "use at least one Hourglass palette at least weekly" etc.). Some of those are still goals of mine related to my beauty collection, but I wanted to focus mainly on panning products for this specific challenge going forward, at least for the time being. I also added a couple of goals to my fragrance goals list.

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

@dubem  wow, great work! How have you liked the blush palette? I don't need any more blushes 😅 but I am curious...

@dubem Wow great work!!

Re: Pan It! - 2025 Challenge

HAPPY HALLOWEEN! 🎃🐈🕸🕯

Items being evicted from the Shelves of Shame, Spooky Edition, in October 2025:

BBW body cream in Lavender Vanilla: notes are lavender oil and vanilla absolute (wild). Not my favorite, as it’s heavy on the lavender. Unfortunately I still have another tube to get through eventually.

Babo Botanicals Moisturizing Bubble Bath and Wash in Oatmilk and Calendula: the second (and last) of my subpar bubble baths. Glad to have it out of my bathroom, but it did smell nice.

Briogeo Superfoods Avocado and Kiwi Mega Moisture Hair Mask, 33.8 fl oz refill pouch AND the regular 8 oz jar: do not be fooled; I bought my first 8 oz jar in spring 2023 and then I thought it would be a good idea to get the refill pouch in November 2023 with an Ulta coupon. It’s taken me TWO YEARS to finally use it up because I do not have the personal discipline to stick to a regular schedule of application. The only way I used this up was by using it as a normal almost-daily conditioner for this entire year. Will not repurchase any hair masks going forward.

[not pictured, previously decanted]

Briogeo Superfoods Matcha and Apple Replenishing Shampoo AND Method Shampoo in Pure Peace (peony, rose, quinoa protein): I combined what I had left of these two shampoos into the Briogeo shampoo bottle and they basically filled the container. That was back in late spring or early summer, so it’s taken me this long to finish them. Neither shampoo was groundbreaking, and I’m set for shampoo for years at this point, so would not repurchase.

[back to regularly scheduled programming]
Method Shampoo in Daily Zen (cucumber, seaweed, green tea) has therefore been decanted into the old Briogeo shampoo container. I had ambitions to have it finished by the end of 2025, but I’m not holding my breath. I do enjoy this one the most out of the three Method shampoos I tried.

La Roche-Posay Toleriane Double Repair Face Moisturizer with Niacinamide: I ended up finishing this on my legs because it was pilling off my face so terribly. I have repented and atoned and I will not make the mistake of ever repurchasing.

Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Face Cream (deluxe sample): this was really nice feeling, but the rose smell is powerful and wasn’t the best for going to bed after my evening routine. Also, more expensive than what I would ideally want to pay.

Versed Skin Soak Moisture Cream: another really nice moisturizer that felt like it did things. Currently I’m stocked on moisturizers, so no plans to repurchase yet but I would.

Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask in Cotton Candy: I’ve been using this consistently (I.e., averaging 4 nights per week) since I bought it in February 2024. I am absolutely a Laneige lip sleeping mask stan. I’ve still got a mini Chocolate lip sleeping mask to use, so I’m hoping to knock that one out much faster so I can get a fresh new jar for my birthday.

SimplePleasures Scented Lip Balm in Sugar Frosting: previously a Christmas gift. It was pleasantly sweet/sugary and it honestly was a moisturizing formula. The only downside was the cap is very glittery, so I had to leave the cap off and be very careful of keeping the tube stashed on my nightstand or the kitchen counter to preserve my sanity.

Farmacy Honey Halo Ultra-Hydrating Ceramide Moisturizer (deluxe sample): my favorite moisturizer sample that I tried this month. It’s so rich and thick and hydrating and even soothing. It’s perfect for cold weather and winter. If I didn’t have three other full-size, hardly used moisturizers already on deck I would have probably made plans to purchase during the VIB sale. I’m earmarking it for next year though.

Laneige Water Bank Blue Hyaluronic Cream Moisturizer (deluxe sample): I normally really like Laneige products, but this one didn’t wow me. I think it could have sunk into my skin better; I thought it felt a bit sticky. Thankful to have had a sample to try so that I don’t put this particular one on my VIB sale list.

Not shown, as they were single-use samples: I had a small collection of shampoo/conditioner and hair mask/treatment foil samples that I made a point of using up this month so they stopped flapping around my skincare drawer in the bathroom. I think the best one I tried that was new to me was the Amika Hydro Rush shampoo and conditioner.
HONORABLE MENTIONS

Pour one out and play taps for Juliette Has A Gun Magnolia Bliss eau de parfum… I’ve really struggled with this the past few months, but I did put a decent dent in it over the past year-ish of actively panning. It started smelling like BO and also was fading faster and faster. Even spraying it on a piece of paper and coming back to it smelled like BO. I got this fragrance at launch in spring 2022 and live in a humid climate, which likely contributed to it turning. So, Juliette is going to the big fragrance counter in the sky and I am moving on to my Valentino fragrances (who are still going strong), plus my handful of 10-mL-and-under travel or sample fragrances who are taking up space on my vanity.

Lastly, please enjoy my Big Bag of Empties that I took to Ulta while I happened to be near one. Stuff was falling out the top of the bag, but I was determined to cram it all into one so I didn’t look like I was going grocery shopping in Ulta with multiple bags. I can’t believe I filled it in only three months! The last time I took empties for recycling, it all fit in one of the small Sephora shipping boxes. I don’t think I’ll have quite that many empties coming up in November and December, but that’s okay because as long as I’m making progress, I’m happy.
