The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

• Which item(s) you would like to work on
• How long you will work on said item
• Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
• Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

• share what item(s) you are working on,
• provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
• ask questions,
• encourage others,
• motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

• Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
• If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
• Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc. 
• Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
• Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
• Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
• Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
• Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

• Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.) 
• Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
• Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
• Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
• Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

September 2023 Pan Update 

MONTHLY SUMMARY: I’m in New York this week, so it’s an early check-in for my September pan, and it’s all about the hair care.

SEPTEMBER ALL STARS: We have two standouts this month - one is done; D - O - N - E Done!! The other is on track to being used up next month. I probably could have finished it this month if I took it with me, but alas, that darn 3-1-1 TSA liquids bag is not as roomy as I’d like. 😝

NEEDS SOME TLC: My lip products for project pan could use some all around attention. I’ve been distracted with using or trying other lipsticks so my project pan lippies haven’t gotten much love. Will try to do better next month.

JVN Complete Blowout Styling Milk 3 oz / 90 mL is all gone! Yay! It’s a repurchase worthy product for me. The OUAI Hydrating Scalp Serum for Healthy, Fuller Looking Hair 2 oz / 60 mL should be done next month!

@ElleElleG, a little heart birdy mentioned you will be at SEPHORiA. Will be on the lookout for you!! 😊

@itsfi  great job! Kudos to you working through full size products, and I love your idea to use tape to measure your progress (might have to steal that idea for next year 🤓)!

The washi tape helps so much @caitbird; do it!  👍🏼 In the early days, I would mark on the bottle. Then someone here mentioned washi tape and done! It’s also fun to see what folks pick for their tape. 😊

@itsfi Thank you! I feel welcome already. I had started but kind of didn't follow through. I think I will start fresh in 2024. I guess I have a lot of things open right now which is overwhelming 🤔

@Mellmars1185, I completely understand. Before my first year of project pan, I had an insane amount of products that were open and partially used, some barely even used. Between 4 years of project pan, a few strategic no buys and low(er) buys, and some serious decluttering days sprinkled in between, I’ve been able to make my stash more manageable (though the Sephoria swag is testing that 😆) and have kept my open products to a much better number. It’s felt quite good to get to this place. 🥰

@itsfi This sounds like the path I want to be on. I am super grateful for all of the swag. I can definitely do a low/no buy. I feel like 2024 willl be a great year to jump in and get some more organization systems in place so I can see everything I have 🙌

@Mellmars1185, oooh, I’m so with you on organization systems. I’m hoping to get to a place where I have the things I need and use daily, with a handful of extras, like things that are sentimental to me, the occasional splurge, etc. Sure, “handful” is subject to debate. 😆 I don’t think I’ll be anyone’s definition of a minimalist but I would like to try to have less than I currently have. Something to aim for, but organizational systems are definitely on the list for 2024!

@itsfi CONGRATS!!!!  I'm going to take your lead into my 2024 project pan and include some hair care.  I'm looking forward to your next report with another finished!!

Thank you @missjeanie! These project pans are great for working through products that can sometimes slip through the cracks or get overlooked because we have so many similar products- wait, who’s in that position? 😆 I have a feeling there’ll only be one, maaaaaybe 2 more, items that I’ll finish or hit pan on before year end. I’m already starting to think about and put together my list for 2024 - it’ll be here in no time!

@itsfi I looked at my stash of panning items this morning and decided I wasn't going to roll anything else in this year.  I wanted to take stock of what I'd been able to work through and what I might keep in mind for next year.  The push is now on to get some of this years used up!  Body lotion three times a day it is!

Hahaha @missjeanie. One year I included a ginormous “value sized” Kiehl’s body lotion in my project pan. omg, I didn’t think I’d live  to see the day that was used up. Near the end, I did depot some and mix it with a highlighter for my own sparkly body lotion. Interesting how that made me reach for it more frequently. Oooh, sparkle!! 🤩🤩

@itsfi So you're saying I need to empty some Danessa Myricks Beauty Infinite Chrome Flakes Multichrome Gel for Eyes & Face Sweet Tooth in the bottle??? lol

Just a little @missjeanie; those chrome flakes have some intense pigmentation to them.
