Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

  • Take photos!!  When you think you arenโ€™t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, Iโ€™m certain youโ€™ll see some changes ๐Ÿ˜ƒ *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long youโ€™ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades youโ€™re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of othersโ€™ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Donโ€™t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  Itโ€™s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be funโ€ฆ.if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you donโ€™t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you @itsfi ๐ŸŒท.  You know, I have other bronzers and highlighters, but this and the Hourglass Ambient Lighting palette are so beautiful ๐Ÿ˜

@Cissy63 Excellent panning!

Oh thank you @Mellmars1185 ๐ŸŒท

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

You are really organized โ€Œ๐Ÿ‘โ€Œ Your panning is going soo good.

I'm not as disciplined โ€Œ๐Ÿ˜…โ€Œ

You are working away through your products nicely, way to go! I'm sure your going to have great progress in March, I can't wait to see your next end of month @Cissy63

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Quick update on February progress!

I only finished two items this month, neither of which were officially in my pan project, but they were value sized so i'm still happy with that! i made quite a dent in some of my other FS products, so i'm thinking spring will be successful!

some tough decisions had to be made - i decided i will be removing the ABH foundation and contour sticks, as well as the nars ignited from my pan this year. i just dont love or reach for the ABH sticks, and have formulas i prefer more, so i dont need to fore myself to use them. the nars is not performing as well as i would like, but i'll still use it occasionally. i'll definitely be keeping it even when its well past its prime because it was one of my first gratis i received, so theres some sentimental value there for me!

products i focused on this month from my project - Ariana Grande Cloud mist, Fenty Gloss Bomb in Fenty Glow, NYX Radiant concealer, Maybelline Infallible Powder Foundation, Bite Agave Lip Balm, Huda Beauty Nude Obsessions Light, Nars Orgasm Blush

products i'd like to focus more on in march - Rosebud Salve Tin, Ciate Dewy Stix, Laura Mercier Lip Glace

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@cianni at least you know you don't care for those items, you're so right, sometimes it's just not worth it to force yourself to use as something you do not like

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster especially when my collection is full of things i do love!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

So understand the tough calls @cianni But using something you just aren't that into over products you love.... you deserve to enjoy your goodies.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@missjeanie totally agree! i have so many fun things i would rather use and play with, so i'll be focusing on those ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@cianni -- when using something is a chore, it's def time to remove it from panning. Yay for unofficial but totally panned items!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@heavyhedon nothing like a surprise pan to keep the motivation going!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Good job on making the tough decisions @cianni. ๐Ÿ‘Š๐Ÿผ I donโ€™t envy you. Smart to move on when there are other beauties in your collection that you prefer - youโ€™ve got some fab items to use for spring!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi thank you! i may have kept working through them if they were almost finished (just for the satisfaction), but these are so full it would take forever!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

That makes sense @cianni! There are plenty other beauties to pan!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

You finished two items, that's a win!

@cianni โ€Œโ€Œ๐Ÿ˜„โ€Œโ€Œ Sometimes plans change, it happens.I think it's great to focus on products you enjoy, I totally get that.

Good luck next month!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CynthieLu thank you! it's shaping up to be a good one already!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@cianni I'd be happy using up two other things too! Good for you for not forcing yourself to use items you don't like as much.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian thanks!! it was extra satisfying because they were value sized. i kept a 1L of Cerave in the shower to wash my face on days i wash my hair (i have a thing about shampoo or conditioner somehow staying on my face and then causing breakouts - not sure if there is anything to my theory or not tbh), and i was sure id never see the end of that one, but it finally finished!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Feb. Classic Cool update & intro to March!

First, apologies for being unresponsive in the forums last 2+ weeks. There was a technical issue & I couldn't get signed in here so could not post, reply, or even like posts. Tried a bunch of things but had to get cust. service to help finally. They are awesome!

Notes on Feb.:

Urban Decay Naked Smoky was great fun to use. I needed this time to mess with all the shades, again and again. Itโ€™s meant to be easy to blend and layer and is, but most shades do build up. My preferred shades were the greys and the mattes, but the warmer shimmers are fine, just too warm for my taste in general. Radar, the deeper one, is more my style than Dirtysweet. The light shimmers worked best for me when sheered out to a glisten. The brown matte-Whiskey--was better; itโ€™s that nice final touch to warm up a dark eye look slightly so the shadow doesnโ€™t read flat, b/c itโ€™s not super warm except compared to the greys; and it makes for a good crease deepener, blended out well. I adored Password- a medium deep grey matte, best of all, enough that it became my go-to shade and a reason to keep this palette nearby often. I think Black Marketโ€”the black matteโ€”is a great black for beginners since itโ€™s so soft and easy to handle, and as I have several darker, more pigmented blacks already, itโ€™s a nice addition to my stash. Smolder is a charcoal shimmer with blue/violet undertones, wicked shade. I want it made into a blush formula. Armor surprised me; a shimmery taupe-ish grey with very fine sparkle, itโ€™s a shade I can imagine using more in conjunction with more colorful palettes, but itโ€™s a good one & done for me too. The biggest surprise had to be the two light mattes, Combust & Thirteen, a beige and creamโ€”they have a surprising amount of pigment for such light shades, they really show up easily on me, but can blend out to a whisper. Last thoughtโ€”although I liked both Slanted and Dagger, middle to deep steel greys with shimmer, I think the whole palette would be fresher with just one of them, replacing whichever with a light soft grey or even better, a true navy matte. They are the only real repetition I found.

IT Cosmetics Bye Bye Pores Pressed Powder, Iโ€™m still not sure about. Itโ€™s fine to set my under-eyes but not better than my several go-tos. As an allover face powder, itโ€™s good, but didnโ€™t make my one area with noticeable pores appear poreless. Itโ€™s very smoothing otherwise, I love how the shade blends in, but itโ€™s a bit heavier than my preference when used with a brush so I had to apply by gently pressing in a small amount with a powder puff or my beauty blender. It could seem drying on me at times. Overall I think itโ€™s best for oilier skins than mine, & itโ€™s hard to be sure I wonโ€™t like it more in summer. My skin has been pretty dry lately till I finally picked up an essence (May Coopโ€™s Raw Sauce) and Iโ€™m getting properly hydrated again. A decent powder, I guess, but not one to knock my faves off their pedestal.

Natasha Denona I Need a Nude in Amorosa was not the shade I expected from online pics when I first got it; thought it would be cooler and pinker, but itโ€™s pretty warm on me and more caramel than pink. Disappointing! After a few uses I began to accept it for what it was and like it, which is why I put it in Feb.โ€™s lineup. I used it tons at first, got tired of it, then remembered a trick from a YTer I used to watch, who always put concealer on first to make her lipstick stay true to color; I used a paler pinker one than my daily go-to, and suddenly Amorosa looked more natural on me, and I got more usage in.

Burberry My Burbery Blush (spray sample) was lovely all month. Didnโ€™t finish it but made progress and decided itโ€™s one I will likely purchase someday. Reminds me of something I used as a teen but is richer.

Pixi by Petra Lash Booster Mascara in Blackout Blue has been decluttered. Using it regularly was a chore; I guess I wanted to like it b/c a) love the shade, b) LOVE the brush and c) love Pixi and never hated any of their products before. Their Glow Tonic is amazeballs and I still mourn their concealer pen that put Touche Eclat to shame for giving better coverage while being just as light to layer. The Endless Silky Eye Pens are legendary. But all of that didnโ€™t help the fact that it was dry yet messy, didnโ€™t show up but was nearly impossible to take off even when used over other mascaras; & I lost lashes. Hated it so much, not sure if it was just older when I got it but-- it is history, though Iโ€™m keeping the brush if I can ever get it fully clean. Itโ€™s soaking right now.

Bareminerals Complexion Rescue in Vanilla is, as always, wonderful on me. It balances my skintone and looks healthy, showing my skin at its best, and makes my skin feel good. Going to put it away (not quite finished) for a bit, use it up in Spring then re-purchase immediately.

March: Pushing Spring๐Ÿฅ€

You probably know by now that I love my peachy makeup, especially cool peachy, in early Spring. Thereโ€™s a lake of solid ice all around my house rn, so letโ€™s call it would-be or proto-Spring; letโ€™s pretend itโ€™s closer than it is, okay? Okay.

Too Faced White Chocolate Chip mini eye palette: Itโ€™s back! Already have pan in 6 of 11 shades from a previous year. Iโ€™d like to use up one of those 6 completely and hit pan on a new shimmer shade as well. Planning to use this as a companion palette through March, as the neutrals always on hand in my daily stash.

Peek Metalimatte Naturally Quick Drying Cream Blush in A-Boo: Itโ€™s Back! With so much pan. Iโ€™d like to expand the pan further before this little guy goes off, and this is my prime season for the shade.

Bareminerals Cream Glaze Lip TopCoat in Pearl Glaze: one of my 2 fave glosses of all time, maybe still the top one. Itโ€™s from 2015, itโ€™s the second one Iโ€™ve bought, and itโ€™s too good to waste. Just want to amp up all my peachy vibes or mod-inspo looks this month, and itโ€™s perfect with White Chipโ€™s shades.

Aerin Wild Geranium Eau De Parfum Spray (sample) is a cool floral with a hint of spice, full of garden goodness. Hardly used, letโ€™s change that.

2 Free Category items:

Hipdot Powder Blush in Solstice is a unique pale creamsicle shade, very different tone from Peekโ€™s A-Boo. Will be interesting to mix & match them. Barely used, Iโ€™d like to make a dip at least.

Chella Highlighter Crayon in Ivory Lace is getting old even for a wood pencil. Usually kept in my purse makeup bag, for use on eyes or as a touch-up concealer. Itโ€™s very multi-purpose but Iโ€™ll be using it mostly for brightening my inner lashline or as a base for shadow.
