Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Hey all you cool cats and kittens, welcome to YEAR 6 of the Pan It Challenge!

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃 *this is the number one recommendation for everyone, regardless of how long you’ve been panning! Those photos add up and can help you realize progress you might otherwise overlook.
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I'm rarely on time 🤣 great job!! @missjeanie

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster lol... I'm trying to make 2023 the year I'm either better about being on time, or just not caring so much that I'm late lol

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@missjeanie yeah, it depends on what exactly it is that I need to be on time to 🤣

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

I'm so excited to say I'm done with the Dior!! I do like it, but it was old and needed to be used, it still wore very well

In it's place I'm going to work on this beautyblender skin tint.

This one has decent coverage, but it makes me too glowy for my liking.

Instead of trying to use it all, I'm going to make my goal to use it through the month of April, then it's going bye bye.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster Well done!  Finishing a foundation always feels like a big win!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you sweets!! It does feel so good @missjeanie

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster -- congrats! I've liked the finish of Dior samples I've tried, but never tried the BB one; smart ideas to take advantage of the glow in the cold months.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you!! Yeah the bb one is most definitely radiant 🤣 @heavyhedon to say the least

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster Ooh great job! Also that's so great you are just going to use it for a bit then toss.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@Samtian thank you!! Yeah I'm not trying to look incredibly oily in the hot months,,, but maybe I can get it gone before April 🤔

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Wooohooo, @lmaster!  I always feel like it's an accomplishment to finish up a foundation.  Funny, the Dior Dior Forever Skin Glow Hydrating Foundation and the beautyblender 12-Hour Always on Radiant Skin Tint with Hyaluronic Acid & Niacinamide  are my two favorite foundations ATM.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@CookieGirl1 how funny!!! I've had the Dior for quite some time, the bb I literally just grabbed out of the drawer! There's many more to get through 😬

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster, feels so good to be done with a foundation. Nice work.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you so much!! @itsfi

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@lmaster  great job on using up the Dior! It's always exciting to finish something you set as a goal 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@caitbird thank you so so much!!

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

After some serious hemming and hawwing over what to to with the tarte Paaarty blush, I've finally come to a decision. @heartsmyface suggested turning the powder into a cream blush or a lip gloss. I thought about splitting the broken blush into two piles and making both a cream blush and a lip gloss. Then reality set in - I'm not going to reach for it as a cream blush despite really liking that idea. But a lip gloss, or a lip product?! Ohhh, I'm more likely to not only reach for it, but to make progress on using it up. There it is, decision made. Thank you to everyone who offered up suggestions - so many great ideas that I've made notes of. Thank you, hearts!
And here are the before and after photos. Going to add this one to my 2023 project pan as well. Seems fitting since the actual tarte Paaarty blush was part of my first panning project.

Goal: use it up! I'm holding onto the pan for the blush; I hope to be able to post it later this year in the empties thread when I work through this diy tinted lip balm.

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

Thank you @Krismorganj! It’s been getting good use too! 😃

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

@itsfi That looks like a gorgeous shade!  What did you use as the base for the gloss?

Re: Pan It! - 2023 Challenge

It really came out beautifully @missjeanie! 😃 I used a mini Laneige lip sleeping mask, in the mint choco flavor. The tinted balm smells deliciously of mint chocolate. I wouldn’t say “no” to a lip balm right now - so cold and my lips are dry practically all the time - and I definitely won’t say “no” to this diy tinted lip balm! 😝
