Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

2021 Challenge located here: Pan It! - 2021 Challenge 🏆

It's time for a new decade, and a new Project Pan!

Before we dive into the details, I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me in another year of panning.  I cannot believe that this thread marks the 4th year of this challenge and how much it has grown over the years.  It's been a joy to witness so many of you participate and encourage others along the way.  For those of you thinking, "there's no way I can do that," think again!  We've all said that at one time or another, and some of the biggest skeptics have grown to take panning by storm.  Thank you all for your never ending inspiration 😘. Cheers to a new decade 🥂-Elle

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

RE: Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Wow @xcicee! How exciting! Nice work! 😃

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I went though a bunch of products this last week and picked out my 20 for 2020 to work on for panning.  For me and my challange, panning is completely using up a product.

I have 20 items that I'll be working on, and I'm excited to see how this goes.  I started off last year with all my 19 in 19 products in a box on my bathroom counter.  I'm going to try this again, as it worked well last year, until I moved the box to under the sink.... opps.

Spoiler
1. Avon naturals Strawberry scented body spray.  I actually don't mind the scent on this.  It will likely be mostly used as room spray though, and I'm ok with that!
2. Dr. Jart light teal sleeping mask. I like this just fine and suspect that it'll be used up quickly sitting on my counter.  It's technically best for me in the summer months since it's a bit lighter in texture, but I use a sleeping mask almost nightly and this has just gotten lost in the mix of others I really prefer.
3. Dr. Jart blue sleeping mask.  See above.
4. Soap and Glory Hand Cream.  I tend to only use a hand cream at work (I work in finance, lots of paper, makes your hands all dry and cracked). I do have a lot of creams that I enjoy and the scent on this one is pretty meh for me.  I'm going to leave it out at home and if it doesn't start to get used more then it'll go to work.
5. GDY hair primer.  This was a gift from team BIC and the brand.  While I loved getting to try this, it has nothing on my favourite B&B hairdressers oil primer.  The scent is nice, but I don't really see any results.  I'll use this in conjunction with days I do a hair mask most likely.
6. Origins Rose wash off mask.  I'm not a fan.  I have so many wash offs that I love that this one doesn't come close.  But I don't want to waste it.  I can do a wash off mask several nights a week so I'm hoping that the goal of using this one up will keep me going.
7.  Origins Charcoal mask.  See Rose mask.
8.  Vera Wang princess perfume.  This is okay.  My nieces love the bottle.  I'm just not as into it as I am others.  If I can't get it used up as a fragrance, it'll be a room spray.  This is a big challange for me as I have so many fragrances I love so much more and there's so much left here.
9.  Kaja primer.  I just haven't been using a primer the last 8 months or so... and I don't miss them.
10.  Kocostar eye patches.  These are so meh.  But I don't want to waste.  The jar is mostly full but if I work at say two uses a week I can get this used up quick.
11. Shea moisture African black soap body mask.  Okay.  This is a good product, fun to use, but... I need to have the time to do it, and the time to sit in the bathroom naked covered in a mask for a hot minute.  I've only used this twice and I suspect there's enough in here for maybe 6-10 uses?  so once a month.  I can commit to once a month!
12. It cosmetics powder foundation.  A rollover from last year that I should be able to finish fairly quickly.  It's a good product, I just forget to use it.
13.  MAC bronzer.  I just don't use bronzer.  I'm going to try on my eyes as much as I can, but it's a warmer shade than I'd like for shadow too.  If I end up near a Mac it might be back to mac'd.  We'll see how progress goes.
14. Tarte Lip crayons.  These are okay, but all are old.  Need to be used or tossed.  I have such a lovely collection of lip products that I love that these quickly were passed over for other items.  Need them out to make them a priority to use.
15. see above
16. see above
17. Clinique almost lipstick in black honey.  Remember when these were all the rage in high school?  you were cool if you had one.  I still like the colour and the sheer aspect.  Again, I just have too many things I prefer.  It will get used if it's out though.
18. Lip marker stain.  Again, I love a good lip stain.  Stains and sheer lips are my favourites.  I need to see this used up, good news is I enjoy the colour and effect.
19. Tarte lip pencil.  I have a few pencils that I love and this one is just ok.  It's also pretty red, a colour I never wear.  May need to get creative with this one.
20. This is going to be a big challange.  KVD blusher.  I'm not a big supporter of KVD, too much drama for me, frankly, I'm not big into 'influencer brands/collabs' at all.  The blush is okay, but it gets hard pan so quickly, and I've been loving my milk cream blusher so much that I'm kinda dreading using powder after a year of using the milk pretty much 5/7 days a week.  I strongly suspect most of this will be used up getting rid of hard pan, or maybe used as bit of an eyeshadow.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@missjeanie, your 20 in 20 is impressive! You got this! Gonna be so much fun hearing about and seeing you pan it all! Go girl! 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Some are certainly easier than others so far @itsfi !

That MAC bronzer and the KVD blusher... I need to find some way to use those up... they just aren't working for me.  Might need to do a 6 month swap out at some point.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

A 6-month swap out sounds like a good plan @missjeanie! Can you repurpose the MAC bronzer as an eyeshadow? Not sure about the blush ... 🤔 Would a blush topper change it up enough for the color to be more to your liking?

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I've been trying to use both on my eyes @itsfi .  The bronzer plays a lot more warm than I normally wear.  The blusher I tried to wear today.  It's okay.  I'm just now devoted to cream blushers.  My mini Milk blusher has lasted me almost a year of daily use and I'd be happy to have that and nothing but.  I'm decided on giving myself an opportunity to declutter some things and replace them if they just aren't working out.  Glad to have some progress on other items though!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@missjeanie I love the 20 in 20 idea! Thank you for sharing.

Best,
Rebecca

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@missjeanie  Keeping the items in a box in the bathroom is a great idea! I am going to steal this for my 20 in '20.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

It was super helpful for me @deathkitty ,I’m using a box from a Sephora Favourite kit. I hope it works for you too!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Wow! Good luck with the lip products @missjeanie - you can do it!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Thanks @ShortErica ! I’m determined and starting using them at home as a balm lol. I’m in pjs and all showered at night with lipstick on!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Too funny @missjeanie!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I don't post as much as I would like anymore but I always find this thread so helpful and inspiring.  I pulled some items to pan last night (mostly skincare) and I will try to remember to post a pic tonight!  Thanks @ElleElleG and everyone for always sharing and supporting!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Trying to pan these 3 by June this year. I go through the rest quite easily but just don’t use acids much. Now that F-Balm is coming my way, I should be able to use these more often. I also took my own sweet little time to build up to Retinol use. I should be able to use it more often too.

ETA : adding bit more details. Also forgot to add Caudalie radiance serum to the list.

Finish following products by June, 2020 -

  1. DE TLC - use 1- 2x wekk
  2. DE retinol - use atleast 2x wekk
  3. DE Babyfacial - use 1x week
  4. Caudalie Radiace serum (4 DS sizes, 10 ml each) - use 1-2 x week

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Good luck with these @naturalooks15. I always want to use acids and retinol on a daily basis and then I realize that is overkill. It's tough finding a balance that works for your skin. I hope things work out and that your skin is beautiful and glowing.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@naturalooks15 I need to use up my DE Babyfacial, if it hasn't already expired.  I used it a lot for a while but I just own so much skincare that it made its way to the back of the drawer accidentally.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@curlychiquita  My skin didn’t enjoy babyfacial earlier as in it looked really good afterwards and helped clean pores etc but the next day my skin will be so so dry that sometime it was painful. Hence I had one half full for a year and never finished.
I wasn’t sure if it was still safe to use on face so I opened a new one for face (yes, I was stupid enough to buy multiple without first determining if my skin can handle it 😳
Now what I do with old one is - use it on my DD for her back acne. I also use it on my arms for keratosis pilaris.  Maybe you can try using the old one on elbows and such where skin is not that delicate.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I always follow up using an acid peel mask with the Origins Hello Calm mask or something similar, and I think it makes a huge difference on how my skin handles the peel. I think if you use an intense hydrating mask (sleeping or wash off), it may make a big difference.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@naturalooks15 thanks for sharing your ideas!  The retinol took care of the adult acne I have on my face, but I still get a lot on my back, so I can definitely use it there.
