Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

2021 Challenge located here: Pan It! - 2021 Challenge 🏆

It's time for a new decade, and a new Project Pan!

Before we dive into the details, I want to thank each and every one of you for joining me in another year of panning.  I cannot believe that this thread marks the 4th year of this challenge and how much it has grown over the years.  It's been a joy to witness so many of you participate and encourage others along the way.  For those of you thinking, "there's no way I can do that," think again!  We've all said that at one time or another, and some of the biggest skeptics have grown to take panning by storm.  Thank you all for your never ending inspiration 😘. Cheers to a new decade 🥂-Elle

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

That mug, I need!! @itsfi

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Lol @ElleElleG! That mug is entirely too accurate, though maybe less so since working from home. 😆 I got the mug as part of last year’s Halloween elf exchange. It’s from Fringe Studio.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@itsfi You’re the queen. I’m keep trying to pan one of my TF Soleil compact. Sooo very close but I don’t think it happens anytime soon.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@blackkitty2014, thank you! I was working at a good clip at the very beginning of the year and it's just slowly tanked along the way. Hahaha! It's hard when there are other palettes or shadows that keep distracting me. I'll be happy if I can just pan one more shadow before the end of the year.

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@itsfi Hahaha heart grow fonder that made me laugh. Oh I can't wait to see the pan soon!!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@Samtian, the poor blush; 😔 it hasn’t gotten much love this year. I wonder if I just prefer cream blushes more. It’s not that I wear those that often either though. 🤔

I am so close to panning that eye shadow. This one seemed to take a lot longer than the others. I wasn’t planning on wearing makeup over the holiday but now, I may just go for it and over the weekend as well while watching football. 😂

I’ve made progress on a few things in October that should set me up for good pans in November and December! Meanwhile just a couple of things finished for the month, but I’m slowly narrowing down how many backups and extras of certain categories I still have.

October 2020 Empties:

-Live Clean Body Lotion in Fresh Water 500 ml/17 fl oz

-First Aid Beauty Facial Radiance Pads 10 count

-Sunday Riley Good Genes All-in-One Lactic Acid Treatment 8 ml/0.27 fl oz (one of two suuuuuper old minis I have of this—like circa 2017 or 2018 old)

-Tarte Sea Surfer Curl Mascara 3 ml/0.1 fl oz (this would be my absolute perfect HG mascara if it came in brown; I’m saving the wand for now as I have one more mascara to get through)

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Nicely done @KeriCherryDee! I’m super impressed you finished a mascara. I feel like it takes me forever, which is why I love the mini versions so much. 😆 Here’s to hoping Tarte introduces a brown version of that mascara soon! 🤞🏼

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I haven't been posting much but I have been trying to work on some pans! I have a few products that I knew I wanted tp pan by the end of this year (a liquid blush, some lippies, a few hair products), but this year I have tried to focus more on volume. The idea was to work through a lot of my collection (especially the minis), and really narrow down the products that I love so I can stop the mass accumulation and have a better idea of what to repurchase.

My goals were: finish 150 products total, of which at least 50 should be makeup (for the purpose of this category, included makeup remover). Of course, there was no way to predict the pandemic, so I am a little behind just because I have been using significantly less makeup, haircare and fragrance in the last 6ish months than I would under normal times.

That being said - I am 104 products in for 2020 so far, 27 of which are makeup. I have a few products that are mostly done, and others that I definitely will finish by the end of this year, so I'm hopeful that I shouldn't be too off from my total goal! I think i'll be pretty off from the 50 for makeup, but that's ok!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

That’s awesome process you’ve made @cianni! The pandemic has definitely changed a lot of things, including how quickly or slowly we move through some products now. It’s all good. Roll with the punches. You’re doing great!! 👍🏼 It’s been super helpful to see and think about what makes sense to repurchase. Have you discovered any HG or favorite products along the way?

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

I think I’m getting to the point where I’m not feeling the pressure of Project Pan as much as I had over the course of the past four years—still a few areas to work on (I think I will forever struggle with nail polish) but I’m getting to a much better place with my products and I’m finding what works for me on a daily basis, which is quite minimal and from a small curated selection of brands. The samples stash is definitely on its way out, which makes me happiest of all!

September 2020 Empties:

-EOS Shea Better Shave Cream in Pink Citrus 207 ml/7 fl oz

-Farmacy Green Clean Makeup Meltaway Cleansing Balm foil 3.5 ml/0.12 fl oz

-Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz in Soft Brown 0.085 g/0.003 oz

-Lilly Lashes Triple X Mascara in Black 8.8 ml/0.30 fl oz (getting flaky and thick/clumpy)

-Huda Beauty Resting Boss Face Waterproof Setting Spray 100 ml/3.38 fl oz

-Tarte Rainforest of the Sea 4-in-1 Setting Mist 75 ml/2.5 fl oz

-destashed: Cover FX High Performance Setting Spray 10 ml/0.33 fl oz (pretty sure the sprayer is broken, it squirts out in a glob)

-Glow Recipe Watermelon Pink Juice Moisturizer 60 ml/2 oz

-Sunday Riley C.E.O. 15% Vitamin C Rapid Flash Brightening Serum 5 ml/0.17 fl oz

-Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm 4.25 g/0.15 oz

Woo hoo @KeriCherryDee! 🙌🏼 It feels good to get through the samples! Congrats! Very nice when you start finding what works best for you! 😍

The TF full-size lipstick was 3/4 done but it went bad before I was able to finish it. The Chanel cream eyeshadow was even worse. It dried up after 9-12 months after purchasing which is couple yrs back. I finally tough it up and throw it 😂🤣😅

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@Guessgal @itsfi I remembered asking someone on the board about the Chanel cream eyeshadow and the response was something liked "It's an know issue and her SA even recommended not buying it if she cant use it up within x number of months" or something similar.  I tried to put my face oils in to revive it but no buenos.  The mascara was Guerlain and it was okay.  My favorite is still the Chanel Le Volume which is no bs no drama ... it just works on my non existent lashes 🤣😂

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Oh no, sorry to hear about your Chanel eyeshadow that dried out 😔 Would you have been able to revive it with something like Inglot Duraline? @blackkitty2014

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Ooooh, look at these beauties @blackkitty2014! 😍 I have a hard time tossing products that haven’t been used up so I commend you for letting go of the Chanel. Is that a Guerlain mascara? How do you like it?

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

How can we be in October already?! Eeek! 😬 The year has flown by and it's definitely been an interesting one, to say the least. Having these pan projects has given me something fun to focus on and I'm thankful for it. 💖 I hope everyone is doing well and hanging in there!

We're getting there! Slowly but surely. We're getting there! Slowly but surely.

Panning another shadow is taking longer than I thought it would, but I'm not giving up!! I will hit pan on Freckle before the year is over!!! As for the Tarte blush, I'm not as optimistic, but we shall see.Panning another shadow is taking longer than I thought it would, but I'm not giving up!! Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

August seemed to go by quickly but the days were long for me. Not much progress in the makeup edition of project pan but the hair and nail care parts of it saw some decent progress. Here's how I fared:

One done, and 4 more inching along. One done, and 4 more inching along.

Spoiler
HAIR CARE

Kerastase Nutritive 8H Magic Night Serum
Goal: To finish the bottle by the end of August, which would be 6 months from when I first made this product a part of my 2020 project pan (NOTE: the bottle was 75% full when I started including it in my project pan for the year).
Status (as of 8.31.2020): DONE!!! I finished the bottle mid-August. This one has a very specific purpose for me - I use it on days when it's dry shampoo at my roots and this Kerastase serum applied lightly throughout the length.  I'll likely purchase a new bottle during the November sale, unless something comes up between now and then to distract me. 😉

LIP CARE

StackedSkincare Hydrating Lip Peel:
Goal: Originally, the goal was to use 2-3x per week until the end of September and then decide whether to keep or toss the product, but the product didn't work well for me as a lip peel, and, at the start of August, I decided I would re-purpose it for my elbows and/or soles of my feet. 🤷‍♀️
Status (as of 8.31.2020): I'm going to have to just will this product across the finish line. I think it's clear that this will not be a repurchase.

SKINCARE

Sephora Collection Coconut Water Hydrating Spray
Goal: Use up by Labor Day
Status (as of 8.31.2020): It's not looking like I'll use up the entire spray bottle by Labor Day. I *think* if I keep at it, I can probably get it done by or if not beforehand, so I'm extending my timeline to the end of the year. Slow and steady.

NAIL CARE

Butter London Horse Power Nail Fertilizer
Goal: Use up by the end of the year and decide whether or not to repurchase
Status (as of 8.31.2020): This one is inching its way along to the finish line. Looking at the clip I'm getting through the product, if I can keep up with using this as it's meant to be used (daily application for a week, followed by a week off, and repeat), then I should just be able to use up the bottle by the end of the year. This is a product where I can see how well it works when I've fallen off the wagon and the use has been inconsistent or non-existent.

Primark PS Sleeping Beauty Overnight Nail Mask
Goal: Finish the bottle by the end of the year
Status (as of 8.31.2020): I hit a snag when it came to using this nail mask consistently for a week / week-and-a-half, in large part because I just forgot about it. I'm not sure I'll meet my goal, but I'll work on being more consistent with this one in September (and keep it at my work desk at home), and see what progress looks like at the end of the month.

Slow and steady ... maybe not for the blushSlow and steady ... maybe not for the blush

Spoiler
MAKEUP

Natasha Denona Biba Eye Shadow Palette
Goal(s):  (1) long term goals: To make noticeable use of every shadow in this palette and to see how many shadows I can pan by year-end. (2) short term goal: To hit pan on Freckle or Tone by the official start of fall, 9.22.2020
Status (as of 8.31.2020): If I'm going to hit pan on another shadow by mid/late September, my best chance is with Freckle, but I'm not holding my breath. I've been trying to pair it with other shadows to mix it up a little, but weather conditions and my allergies has sidelined my use of this palette for a good part of August. Here's to a better September.

Tarte Blush (Paaarty)
Goal: To wear blush on a more consistent basis and to see how I like this particular color and formula.
Status (as of 8.31.2020): With mask-wearing, I'm not wearing blush at all. Going to put this one on an indefinite hold until I'm wearing more than just concealer and lip balm. I'll try to wear it on a day when I'm at home all day.

Looking forward to hearing about how everyone's project pans are going!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@itsfi Great work! Hope we see pan soon!

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

Me too @Samtian! I need to get back to wear eye shadow more regularly. I say it every month but this’ll be the month! 😆

Re: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

@itsfi You can do it! I have faith in you!
