Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

*12/15/19 - The 2020 thread is now live: Pan It! - 2020 Challenge!

👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾 Hi All!

Can y'all believe 2019 is literally knocking on the door??  Given its proximity it's high time we get the 2019 Panning Challenge Rolling.

The "Rules"

To accommodate a variety of interests, you all are encouraged to pick items to pan that are most suitable to your collections.  For some, this might mean focusing on a particular type of product (like lipstick) and for others this may include a larger variety spanning your entire makeup or skincare routine.

Getting Started (please share the following)

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Please Use This Thread To...

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 😃
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you made a commitment to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else!  (This includes excluding particular shades from your goals if focusing on palettes, etc.)

Ideas to Help You Pan Those Items:

Spoiler
  • Roll the dice: number your items and use a random number generator to pick what you will use each (day/week/month/etc.)
  • Layer/Mask: items you are less fond of under things you like
  • Pan a Look: at the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday
  • Recreate: a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an "everyday" look by adding subtle pops of color (in the crease or on the lower lash line, mix lip products to make shades wearable, etc.)

Past Panning Challenges:

Spoiler

May pan be ever in your favor!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Can't wait to see you start hitting pan on the shadows @eshoe! Such a bittersweet feeling when this happens. I recently hit pan on my MARC JACOBS BEAUTY - O!Mega Bronzer Coconut Perfect Tan- so proud of myself yet sad since it's one of my favorite bronzers! 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Wow that’s impressive, @HelenBT! I’m still learning how to use bronzer properly so I may go through my DS pretty quickly practicing. I’ve got a few brushes I’m going to experiment with, we’ll see how it goes!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@eshoe Woo hoo!!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Thanks @ElleElleG! I'll post closer to 2019, want to focus in on my end of 2018 projects 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I admire your dedication @CC3616 !  Each morning I have to remind myself of the panning blitz so I don't only reach for new items in my collection.  Can't wait to see your next project!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

That's exactly where I'm at with it @ElleElleG! I have a hard time sticking to my blitz items and I have to think about it every day, I keep reaching for other stuff too! I'd abandon ship now if I got excited about the next project LOL, although I have some things in mind. TY! Excited to see everyones end of year progress and new year goals 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Mix your blitzing items with some new things! Best compromise @CC3616

Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Joining the pan party for 2019! I need to move these products out of my stash and figure if I dedicate my time on them, I can make it happen next year. While measuring the amounts of product remaining in each pencil, I accidentally broke the MakeMake eyeliner and Cover FX concealer stick...so I replaced them with two Charlotte Tilbury eyeliners. I don't even feel bad about the two broken products... just goes to show how much excess I'm living with. 2019 will be a year of no buy for me, except to replace items in categories that I'm completely out of. I struggle with finishing lip products only because I simply forget to use them. These six lip items are getting old and need to be used up or tossed out. Sadly, I love the KVD colors and formula, but with all the controversies and her questionable viewpoints, I won't be supporting the brand from now going forward. With six lip products and six eyeliners in the mix, I won't replace the items with new ones to pan until all six of refguse categories are used up or discarded. As for the rest, if I use them up or discard for one reason or another, I will replace that spot in the panning project with another of the same category. There's no dip in the highlighter nor the bronzer. The eyeshadow palette, I've been working on it for the past year, taking breaks from it here and there...I've realized how slowly I run through eyeshadows; no more buying eyeshadows for me!! 😣😣😣 ***good luck everyone on your panning goals for the coming year***

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Ahhh @angelKiss24 I miss seeing your eyeshadow looks!!  So glad you're joining in this year.  I echo your struggled with finishing lip products; there are times where I can't leave without wearing something and then long stretches where I can't be bothered, LOL.

Best of luck on your panning 💕

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

No eye shadows in 2019 for me either @angelKiss24!!! I'm working through 3 big palettes for the challenge.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@angelKiss24 I admire your work on the naked basics palette. I struggle with just matte or just shimmer because I like to use both and ended up decluttering mine.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I posted this in the old thread, but not here where it matters... here's my 19-in-2019. The lip scrub is in imminent danger of being decluttered though, so I need to pick one new item to replace it.IMG_20181128_170845_764.jpg

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Nice array of items for your 19 in 2019 @fieldsofclover

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

I LOVE the concept of 19 in 2019 @fieldsofclover!! I might have to borrow that idea and do a 20 in 2020. 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@fieldsofclover Dang that is a huge bottle of ouai oil! I had a DS of it and it smells great though 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@CC3616 I was so excited to get it, but the pump on the bottle is **terrible** so I've hardly used it. Now I'm scared it will go bad before I can use the whole thing, so I need to make it a project 😅

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

💗 your photo @fieldsofclover.

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Ok this pic is a little messy (an attestation to the fact that I own WAY too many random products). These are what I’ve set aside to pan or finish this year. It seems like a lot.. yes, 42 items..... but the ones with an asterisk* are only half full or less, so I’m hoping that those won’t take too long to finish, and I’ll be able to put in more work on the fuller items! 260FC0A6-37F3-400A-A0B3-EE2F2628D671.jpeg

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@cianni that is exactly why I joined in; I had way too many random DS samples and wanted to develop a more curated beauty collection! Just the process of doing what you are now helped me get a better idea of how to use up my products.

Can’t wait to see how you do in the New Year!

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

@eshoe exactly! As soon as I started getting into skincare and makeup I really took the “more is more” approach, and now I’m realizing I’d rather have a more cohesive collection of things I know I’ll use. I’m excited if only to be able to see what my countertops and drawers look like again😂

Re: Pan It! - 2019 Challenge!

Since my last panning projects haven't exactly worked out, I'll focus more on items I know I can use everyday. I've been using this Tarte palette almost everyday since this summer and I've only hit pan on the bronzer 🙈 (I use all the shades as eyeshadows). I'd like to use up all of the eyeshadows in pink and use up at much as the eyeshadows in blue as possible. I don't reach for the other colours as much so I might donate it to a family member after that 😬IMG_20181203_180306.jpg

I've also been using this Wet n Wild highlighter nearly everyday since I bought it this summer. I love it, but I got a bunch of new ones and I'd love to at least finish 1/3-1/2 of this one before I move on to another.

I already have a couple of shades similar to these Colourpop shadows (Twitterpated & Come and Get It), so I'd like to finish them. IMG_20181203_180405.jpg

I might add more products in later like lipsticks and skincare 🙂
