Pan It! - 2017 Challenge!

After chatting with a few of you it seems we were in need of an official "Project Pan" thread for longterm projects to get some use out of our respective makeup collections.  All are welcome to participate!

To accommodate various interests the purpose of this thread is for participants to pick at least 1 item (preferably an eyeshadow palette) to use for at least a month (for a "one month one palette") or until December 31, 2017.  You do not have to use the selected item(s) exclusively and working on simultaneous items is more than OK!

**No project is too big or too small, you know your collection, your goals, and your limitations, do what works best for you!**

Please use this thread to:

  • share what item(s) you are working on,
  • provide comparative progress photos of your item(s) monthly (at the beginning of the month when possible),
  • ask questions,
  • encourage others,
  • motivate others with the looks you create with your item(s)

To get started let us know:

  • Which item(s) you would like to work on
  • How long you will work on said item
  • Goal: explore a new item, revisit an old item, decide whether to keep pass or trash, and/or completely finish item, etc.
  • Starting photo of item

Tips and Tricks to Panning/Getting Some Use Out of Your Stash:

Spoiler
  • Take photos!!  When you think you aren’t making a dent in anything look back at those photos, I’m certain you’ll see some changes 🙂
  • If you goal is to hit pan or use something up entirely, try concentrating your brush/applicator in the same area each time you use it
  • Multitask your products: eyeshadows as highlighter, lipstick as blush, eyeshadow as brow powder, etc.
  • Layer eyeshadow to create different colors (this is especially helpful to get use out of shades you’re not fond of).
  • Have shadows with a ton of fall out?  Use water
  • Watching the progress of others’ can be fun but try not compare your progress to theirs.  We all use our makeup differently and have different goals.
  • Don’t restrict yourself to only using the item(s) you are working on.  It’s more than OK to incorporate other items or take a break!
  • Makeup should be fun….if you begin to dread doing your makeup because you have committed to use a product that you now hate, TOSS IT!  Do not force yourself to use up something you don’t like.  Move on to something else

Need some challenges/ideas to help you along the way?  Here are some:

Spoiler
  • Pan a look:  At the beginning of the week pick a look that you can wear everyday Recreate a look worn by a fellow BICer, celebrity, etc.
  • Spice up an “everyday” look by throwing a different color in your crease or on your lower lash line
  • Roll the dice: pick 2-3 of your most underused shades in your palette and create a look

Prefer to pan other color items like highlighters or blush?  Feel free to share your items, goals, and progress as well 😉

Now let's see some pan!

Brava, Brava!Brava, Brava!

WOW @trishavt that's some amazing progress!  Even better, these items went out on a high note!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

Just realized I didn't update this thread with my one month one palette struggles.

In addition to my longer products I selected the Viseart Petit Pro as my complimentary palette for the month. Within the first week I was completely over it, which is odd for me to say since I love my Neutral Mattes palette. My issue: the d*mn fallout!  This is Urban Decay YDK type bad; glitter everywhere including my contacts.

1 Week in (9/8), some of the fallout1 Week in (9/8), some of the fallout

Another frustration, the burgundy shade looks muddy on me (and not at all burgundy) much like the shade Burgundy I'm the Lorac Pro Matte.

One positive (I suppose) is that this palette has reinforced my disdain for gold shadows. In an effort to use it up I usually layer it with the champagne shimmery shade or Bootycall from the UD Naked2.

Hopefully your project(s) are going well!!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

Ohhhh @ElleElleG! So sad the petite pro isn't working for you!! I used mine for about a week before packing it away and didn't experience any major fallouts...maybe yours was a bad batch? Mine is still being shipped here so I can't pull it out to test again

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

I'm not sure @angelKiss24!  I dug around on Instagram a bit and saw similar comments about the fallout 😕.  Hopefully yours arrives soon so you can test it out and see what I'm doing wrong! But I can't wait until October 1 hits so I can stow it away again, LOL.

I'm sort of cheating on my Naked Basics today. ..using on...

I'm sort of cheating on my Naked Basics today. ..using only one color from it, the rest are from the ND Sunset palette 😄😊

Re: I'm sort of cheating on my Naked Basics today. ..using on...

OMG - What a stunning look!   You have a lot of talent!!! ❤️   @angelKiss24

Re: I'm sort of cheating on my Naked Basics today. ..using on...

So not cheating @angelKiss24 !  As long as you use something from the palette you're putting it to use right 😉

This is beautiful!  Love how you put the yellow in the inner crease and transitioned it to red on the outer end!

Re: I'm sort of cheating on my Naked Basics today. ..using on...

This is so pretty. I love it!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

Finally got around to taking a picture of my stila palettes. I've used each once since posting. I think it's going to be easier to use the purple (in the moment) palette than the green (in the garden) one. I'm having a bit of trouble preventing the green shades from looking a bit like a healing black eye on my lids, so yay goals.IMG_20170907_040501592.jpg

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@snoflakefaerie  I agree with the recommendations by @fairlywell and @angelKiss24 below.

Also for muddy shades I like to pack that on then top it with a lighter shade to lighten the color (I do this with golds a lot since I hate the color on me).  Another way to put a dent in it is to use it in your water line as a pop of color.

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@ElleElleG @angelKiss24 @fairlywell

Thanks for all the ideas. Not only do I ignore palettes, but I get stuck doing the same eyeshadow pattern, just with different colors all the time. These ideas are definitely helpful to get me out of my rut!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@snoflakefaerie You could try layering your greens over a black or brown base? You might get something smoky that way!

oooooo....i like this idea of layering you and @elleelleg...

oooooo....i like this idea of layering you and @ElleElleG have! I don't know why I never thought of it! how about having the green all over the lid and pop the gold "honey" or the shade above it on the middle of the lid? blend it a little for a kind of a halo effect?

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

I carry several lipsticks with me in my purse and choose which one to wear after I have breakfast at work. So, I decided to switch my lippies out for the month. 🙂

Hello ladies of the month :)Hello ladies of the month 🙂

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

Ahh @darkiceis I knew carrying multiple lipsticks around was normal, lol!  Also, keeping them nearby is a great way to remember to wear them.  Love the shades you have here!

BTW, I just purchased Whirl for the first time and I finally get the hype!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@darkiceis I am loving your fall color choices. I also wait till I'm at work to finish/do my makeup so I walk around with about 8 lipsticks in my bag. I'm currently staring at 3 velvet lip glides, an hourglass lipstylo, and 5 mini perfumes sitting right under my computer screen.

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

I am loving watching this thread! There's no way I can realistically make panning a palette a goal, not any time soon at least...I have a habit of buying more and more, but I only wear makeup a couple of times a week. Currently I try to rotate them all, and at some point I may sit down and make some hard choices about which ones to weed out. I love them all, but some get pushed to the bottom of the rotation schedule more than others.

However, for a small contribution, I am currently trying to go through all of my open mascara samples and use up as many as I can before I have to toss them. I'd like to whittle this down to only two or three in rotation instead of the 12-15 I have open now (good grief, what was I thinking lol).

@BrwnSugaG had a good idea with perfumes samples too. Normally I don't even bother smelling them; I'm terribly picky when it comes to scent, but I went on a binge lately of trying everything to try and open my horizons...so now I have a bunch of sprayed-once samples sitting around that I really should just finish off and clear out.

I simply adore all the pan pics though, and am living vicariously through y'all. Maybe I can join in those in about 20 years. 😂 Keep em coming!!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

I’m trying to get through my mini and full size mascaras too!  Decided that I have so many that I can get rid of any that I don’t love after trying 2-3 times. Then, I Just came across an old stash of about 12 mini mascaras while I was organizing today.  They were so old and dried out, so I tossed those and it was pretty satisfying. @RGbrown

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@sister13

I am soooo torn. I haven't run across any that I just can't stand yet, but I do have a couple that I like better than others. Do I use the ok-but-not-great stuff and feel less wasteful, or just toss em and move on to the good stuff...

Same goes for perfume; I'm trying to use up all these samples while my loves are sitting neglected. I've gotten rid of plenty that I just can't tolerate, but I still have lots of so-so ones left...I want them gone so I don't have to look at them anymore, but I hate just throwing them out. It's a tough choice!

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

I love mascara and usually can’t resist buying new formulas. I end up with usually 3 minis in my purse and more in my cars and at the office. Since I like the wetter formulas, they last a pretty long time, even when I’m hoping they’ll run out so I can open a new one, lol!

For perfume samples,  I have a new system: I spray it on me as soon as a package arrives. I decide after the first few hours day if it’s interesting enough to warrant another try. If not, it goes right into my giveaway basket to get added to gifts, stockings, etc.  If I like it at least some, it goes where I can try it again. Helps me not to re-sample any duds! @RGbrown

Re: Pan It! - 2017 Challenge

@sister13

I think I just need to get pickier about which perfume samples I keep. I went on a binge over a few days, testing many, and realized that I'm not quite as picky as I thought...there were way more that were decent enough to keep than I thought there would be. So now I have way too many samples going, but as I go back through them again, many of them are just "ok" instead of loves. I think I'm going to put some of them by my bed and use them up as pillow mists each night just to get them gone lol
