My moisturizer is acting weird

Hey guys! I have pretty dry skin that is somewhat combination with some oil in my t-zone but I've been having the weirdest problems with moisturizer lately. Everytime I put either expensive of drugstore moisturizer on it looks fine but then I put makeup on and it's like the moisturizer never sank into my skin and it just starts bunching up and peeling off my face? It's been awful and I don't know why it's happening. I've tried different moisturizers, foundations, primers, and giving it time to set into my skin but it keeps happening. Thanks for the help guys!

Re: My moisturizer is acting weird

hi @Anonymous ! the balling up is silicone ! either 1. you're putting on too much, 2. it's reacting to a silicone heavy serum underneath (?) / primer on top, or 3. ya just need to get a moisturizer with a different grade of / less (check the ingredients list) silicone, or no silicone all together (this shouldn't be necessary).

regular exfoliation (i prefer chemical over physical scrubs, like first aid beauty facial radiance pads) should help clear your skin of dead cells and help product absorb better, too.

hope this helps !

Sounds like we have the same skin type and concerns. I bought the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream and I really enjoy it! It keeps my skin moisturized without feeling heavy, it smells decent, and it works well under my makeup. I do wait about 10-15 minutes for it settle into my skin before applying my makeup. However, it is expensive! I also suggest you do some type of hydrating treatment before applying your moisturizer, like using a water essence.

RE: My moisturizer is acting weird

Honestly I've never had a problem with this but I don't go heavy on thr foundation, I rely on sheer ones so it's less of an issue for me. I've even been known to mix oils and water creams after the shower just so I don't lose too much moisture, and then blend a foundation stick into it. Clay can work well with both.

RE: My moisturizer is acting weird

It may be that the makeup and the moisture products are different types... oil and water won't mix. I don't know what products you're using in combination, but just know that the three main categories/ingredients that could cause this are water, oils, and silicone (look for -cone or -siloxane in the ingredients). One product could concievably have all three, so the most important thing is proportions. Water-based primers or moisturizers may have silicone, but further down the ingredients list. An oily primer and a watery foundation will NEVER work.

Re: RE: My moisturizer is acting weird

@theflake is absolutely right! Sounds like the oil / water / silicone in your products don't mix and make your makeup pill. Try removing a product and see if that makes it go away. That way you can find out what ingredients don't mix. You can then get a water-based primer for water-based foundation and you shouldn't have the problem.

RE: My moisturizer is acting weird

So the same thing has happened to me in the past. Its either one of two things; 1) you need to put you moisturizer on 15/20 minutes before you do you makeup. It needs to completely dry before you start applying anything on your face or it will bunch up. 2) you probably need to exfoliate. It could be excess dirt or oil from your pores thats causing this. Make sure you use a mask atleast once a week or so. I use the Caudalie Instant Detox Mask and it works amazinggg!!!! I also have overall dry skin but get oily in my T-Zone and these are the things that have helped me. Good luck
