Ive been using neutrogena’s simple cleanser for a while now but I still find my cheeks, forehead, and chin breaks out. I have dry skin and Im a swimmer so the chlorine is always drying out my skin. Im looking for a cleanser but any other product suggestions would be great too
I usually do the neutrogene cleanser, then some nights Ill do a mask, then tone or no mask and just tone with the neutrogena no alcohol toner, then a tea tree oil serum, and then moisturize. Lastly ill use a mario b. Facial spray.
@Jazzie4546 Tea tree oil might be further drying your skin; dryness is a known side effect. Do you use it all over your face, or do you spot treat with it? I have combo skin. If I put tea tree oil all over my face 2 days in a row, my skin reacts badly on the second day: I get scaly dry patches. So I only spot treat with it occasionally.
Dry skin loves hydrating cleansers. I have dry skin everywhere but my nose area (very oily) and my forehead (kinda normal). Right now, my favorite cleansers are made by Paula’s Choice. You can buy sample and/or travel sizes of most of their cleansers direct from their site, rather than commit to full size bottles right away. (A couple months ago, I bought travel sizes of 4 cleansers to try.) Here are the two I normally use, plus a third recommendation:
I’ll also suggest a BHA exfoliant product (in addition to any cleanser you might choose that contains BHA). I use a Paula’s Choice BHA gel, but there’s also THE ORDINARY - Salicylic Acid 2% Solution as a much less expensive option, plus many other products out there. You can spot treat existing acne with BHA products meant for full face use. I often do that with my PC gel. Sometimes I apply it just to my entire oily zone, where my big pores are, to clear dead skin cells from those pores and prevent more breakouts. (I do occasionally use it all over my face, but my usual full-face exfoliant is an AHA serum.)
Consider shuffling the steps in your routine. After washing, use your toner, then use a mask/serum. Toner is generally meant to remove any leftover traces of makeup and rebalance skin’s pH after washing, though some dermatologists say skin rebalances its own pH and needs no toner. Most of today’s toners also deposit good stuff, like antioxidants, AHA (another kind of exfoliant), and hyaluronic acid, into skin. If your current toner contains alcohol, swap it for one that doesn’t. Some folks can handle alcohol in skincare products but that stuff can cause dry skin even more dryness.
What's the rest of your routine, @Jazzie4546? To help with breakouts, you'll most likely want a spot treatment or acne-fighting serum rather than a cleanser. But a couple of good gentle cleansers that you can get at Sephora are
PHILOSOPHY - Purity Made Simple Cleanser
FIRST AID BEAUTY - Pure Skin Face Cleanser
Kate Somerville also makes some nice cleansers and her ExfoliKate might be one you could work in a couple of nights a week.
