Ingredient comparison among FAB Ultra repair, Dr Jart Ceramidin and CeraVe ??

I am looking for a winter cream for someone (tween in extended family) who has severely dry skin and used to have eczema. I felt like ingredients in First Aid Beauty Ultra repair cream are very similar to CeraVe or Cetaphil (their rep agreed and just said if I compare FAB will come out "cleaner") and reading things looks like Dr Jart Ceramidin also might be similar as CeraVe does have ceramides.

No point in starting off on expensive cream if similar quality cheaper option is available.

Have you compared or know any sites where these have been compared in terms of ingredients.

Also very interested in personal experience in terms of effectiveness if you have used these personally.

Thanks all for your replies. I ended up buying FAB at sale and also Dr. Jart trial size. Costco sizes Cetaphit of course is already a staple at home 🙂 I will try these for some time and report back my experience.

Initial impression of FAB is pretty good. It’s moisturizing but not greasy or sticky at all which is a great plus. It also repaired a stubborn dry patch within a week so that is a good sign again.

I've used all of those products extensively. CeraVe is more hydrating than Fab. Dr jardt wasn't soothing or moisturizing enough. Fab is very mild and feels kind of useless but I've bought it several times for the sake of it/deala. I've repurchased CeraVe multiple times for it's effectiveness and how it quenched my thirsty skin when I used it in conjunction with several hydrating layers of skincare. Dr jardt I didn't bother with again after finishing my first tube.

My son has eczema and extremely dry skin and the FAB cream just didn't work for him, at all! I would recommend Skinfix products. They are excellent! My son goes through a whole day, without me having to re-apply, with the Skinfix. Also, Vaseline makes a lotion for eczema prone skin, that is good. The Vaseline lotion comes in the white container. Very affordable, too. Check it out.

I've used everything you mentioned except for the FAB cream... it's on my try list! I have combo-dry, dehydrated skin with rosacea and have also dealt with eczema on and off throughout my life. I also live in northern Wisconsin and spend a lot of time outside, so proper winter protection is critical for me.

I look for moisturizers with a nice balance of humectants (e.g. glycerin, hyaluronic acid/derivatives, urea, honey) to draw moisture from lower layers of the skin, emollients and occlusives (e.g. squalane, lanolin, shea butter, dimethicone, caprylic/capric triglycerides) to seal in the moisture, and conditioners (e.g. ceramides, cholesterol, fatty acids and alcohols) to heal and fortify the skin barrier. The Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin and Clinique Moisture Surge lines have a balanced abundance of these ingredients and a minimum of ingredients problematic for dry and/or reactive skin. They're also cosmetically elegant and behave themselves under SPF and makeup. The products I tried from those lines work brilliantly and have never caused adverse effects for me. The CeraVe and Cetaphil face moisturizers are obviously much more pared down, the benefits of which are less risk of irritation and lower price of course. However, the ones I've tried don't keep my skin moisturized as long, don't condition as thoroughly, and are much less cosmetically elegant. Still solid options, but for me it's worth the splurge for all those additional ingredients.

Okay... that was overkill, haha. But having rather finicky skin, I've tried a lot of different moisturizers and I figure I should share that experience! 🙂

may i ask why you would want to draw moisture from the lower layers of skin? wouldn't that aggravate your skin more? thanks!

Re: Ingredient comparison among FAB Ultra repair, Dr Jart Ceramidin and CeraVe ??

@naturalooks15 I have used all 3. In fact, I currently have the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream and CeraVe Moisturizing cream at home, and I picked up a couple tubs of the First Aid Beauty cream on Black Friday (but have used multiple tubes of it in the past)

For comparing ingredients myself, I use cosdna.com. I take their "acne" and "irritant" rating with a grain of salt (I know in general what irritates my skin and sometimes ingredients that I like are higher up on these ratings) and look at safety.

I don't have eczema or particularly dry skin, so I use the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Cream as an extra moisturizing layer for windy, cold days. I go through very, very little of it since it's pretty rich and I don't need it for my skin type (combo normal/oily, but mostly normal - I live in an extremely dry and harsh climate however with very hard water). A tiny 5 mL sample has lasted me a year. I also use the Dr. Jart+ Ceramidin Liquid daily in the winter in the morning...have used up almost a whole bottle. For my skin, the Ceramidin Cream does the best without making my face greasy.

The Cerave I use as a body lotion as it's quite thick. I'm not sure if I'd be comfortable using it on my face, due to the high up position of cetearyl alcohol on the ingredients list. The FAB I intend to use as a richer body cream for my super dry legs which get flaky and scaly looking in the winter. I think while the FAB would be too greasy for skin but for eczema, I think the added colloidal oatmeal would be very beneficial to soothe the skin. Hence I intend to use this on my legs which need extra help with moisture.

As with any products, always do a test patch to see if any reaction occurs first.

I haven’t used the Dr Jart or CeraVe @naturalooks15, so I can’t offer an opinion there. But my son (16) has eczema and the FAB has done more to relieve it than his prescription ointment did - without steroids or the greasy feeling. I use it on my hands and it works beautifully without leaving a greasy feel. I know the price is slightly off putting, but have you tried the tube (the big one)?  I find it’s easier to control the amount you use and also you’re not contaminating the tub by sticking your fingers in it.

Re: Ingredient comparison among FAB Ultra repair, Dr Jart Ceramidin and CeraVe ??

I started out using FAB Ulta Repair, which worked well for the first month or so. When it stopped working as good, I switched to Belif Aqua Bomb which has saved my skin!

@naturalooks15 I rec reading the reviews on beautypedia and then deciding.  I personally own CeraVe PM and love it; it is also rec'd by many derms.  Good luck!

Re: Ingredient comparison among FAB Ultra repair, Dr Jart Ceramidin and CeraVe ??

Hello!

I'm so glad I finally get to share my wisdom on this topic. I have eczema AND I took Accutane last year, over the winter season...in Minnesota. It was a perfect storm of dry skin dangers, and I did a ton of research beforehand to know what would be best.

I ended up making the sacrifice and buying the First Aid Beauty ultra repair cream right when I started my medication. As the weather got colder, as my dosage increased, and as I had been taking it for longer, never once did it fail me. It kept my face, eczema-prone cheeks, and eczema-plagued neck plenty moisturized throughout my treatment. I would highly recommend it, and further I would recommend pairing it with the Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser. It almost feels like a watered-down lotion and yet it does a good job of cleaning my skin without stripping it or aggravating my eczema.

The F.A.B. cream absorbs well, so don't be afraid to put another layer on after waiting a few minutes. I can't speak to the comparison between that cream and other products, but I can say that it worked wonders for me and I think it's worth a shot. Good luck to your family member!
