IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

If we can use moisturizers and cleansers daily, couldn't I do a face mask every day? I mean it would vary of course, I wouldn't do a clay mask 4 nights in a row but...I'll switch between clay, gel, peel, sheet, rubber.. So it's not too much of one type. That should be fine right?

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

Hi @tevrashai! What a great question! It definitely can be okay to mask every day, depending on your skin type, condition, the masks you are using, and the ingredients in them. You are absolutely right to point out that using different types of masks or masks for different purposes plays into the equation of whether daily masking is safe. On average, I probably mask every day, with a mix of sheet masks, wash off masks and sleeping masks. My skin is on the dehydrated side and can handle (and loves) hydrating masks. I can wear them every day and my skin is happy. That frequency may be too much for someone with oily skin though. Likewise, someone with oilier skin may be able to tolerate using a clay mask more frequently than someone with dry skin.

Exfoliating, detoxifying, purifying masks, as well as acid based masks should be used sparingly. Again, it depends on a person's skin, what it can tolerate and what it needs. Overexfoliation is not uncommon; happens a lot, especially since there are a lot of good exfoliating products / masks out there. You just have to listen to your skin, what it needs and can handle.

You listed a good variety of different types of masks that you rotate through in your routine. Would love to hear which mask products your using and how you like them. 🙂

Thank you for the tag, @sprocketta!

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

@tevrashai@lmaster makes an excellent point-hydration masks are great everyday masks, whereas masks that address specific concerns are best rotated on an as-need basis.

In addition, it’s important to know (or find out inadvertently, as I have) which ingredients don’t agree with your skin. And always read the ingredients before buying. Sounds obvious but I can’t count the number of times I’ve pulled out a mask to use and it had an ingredient I shy away from!

I mask just about every day, also like lmaster sometimes twice a day. My skin is generally not sensitive and can handle a lot, thank goodness. So I think just paying attention to how your skin is reacting, the ingredients and expiration dates would be an important part of masking every day! You can always check out the Mask of the Week Challenge thread, too:)

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

@tevrashai I mask everyday, sometimes twice a day, hydrating masks are excellent to use daily. Anti aging, firming, charcoal, detox,a brightening and soothing masks I rotate around. And sometimes add a mask with acids once a week give or take

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

I say go for it @tevrashai !  I've done bouts of masking daily for a month at a time and had no adverse effects.  I say listen to what your body/skin is telling you.  If your skin is dry go for a hydrating mask, if it's dull, brightening, if it's extra oily clay etc.  I'd say worry more about what ingredients your seeing in the masks and how your skin reacts to them rather than how often you're using.

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

@tevrashai  It depends on the ingredients in the mask. For instance, most sheet masks contain hydrating + moisturizing + antioxidant ingredients, and all that stuff can (and probably should, depending on your particular skin) be used daily. 🙂 It’s the additional stuff in masks that determines how often you can use it.

Example: I have mostly-dry combo skin that’s weirdly finicky. My face loves cica sheet masks and sleep masks, and I’ve learned through trial and error that I can use them frequently. Honey masks are a different story: to get the benefits of this ingredient without severely drying out my skin (honey has kind of a reverse humectant effect on me :(), I have to space out my honey masking quite a bit: no more than twice a week, and sometimes that’s pushing it.

Re: IS IT SAFE TO DO A FACE MASK EVERY DAY?

@tevrashai there are definitely people here who do mask a lot. I think @itsfi and @eshoe are daily makers. And there's a thread specifically for masking where people post about it. I think one of these lovelies can give you their perspective.
