Re: I don't know what toner to use

Hey girl! So I’m also a young teenage girl so i definitely know what’s up. So I used to be  pretty much the same as you and have difficulty finding a good routine that’s affordable, but I now have a great routine. I know that what I typed up is a lot but please please please read it all!! 🩷
First you need a good cleanser. Now you don’t need to spend a lot on a cleanser but a great option is the cereva hydrating cleanser. I use this and it’s so so so good! It also removes all your makeup.  You will love it if you have dry or combination skin. Although if you have oily skin try the acne foam one.

Next toner. Now I know that a lot of people recommend the glow recipe toner but personally I wouldn’t use it because it’s scented which can irritate sensitive skin. It’s also not very friendly to acne prone skin. Now the toner I do recommend is the ordinary MILK toner. (There’s 2 different ones lol get the milk one ☝️)  it’s super gentle and hydrating and won’t strip your skin. Now if you are just starting out using a toner then you might want to slowing start including it into your routine. (Like use it 2 times a week then 3 times until you eventually can use it everyday.) The Ordinary Saccharomyces Ferment 30% Milky Toner 3.4 oz / 100 ml

Next this step it very optional but if you have ance you might want to use some sort of serum. The The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid 2% + B5 Hydrating Serum with Ceramides  is great for all skin types.

Another optional step is a face mist. A face mist is to give your face an extra boost of hydration I like the Caudalie Grape Water Moisturizing Face Mist

And the bubble bounce back facial mist.

Now it’s moisturizer. I really like the bubble one. There is three different types for each skin type, super moisturizing, and affordable.

Now is a surprisingly important step during the summer. Sunscreen! Even if you don’t burn it’s still a good idea to but some sunscreen on. Nobody wants skin cancer! I really like the Hawaiian tropic sunscreen. It gives my face a nice glow too!

lastly something for your lips. Vaseline and Aquafor are very good choices. If you want to splurge tho the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm for Hydration & Shine Pink Sugar - sheer light pink  and OLEHENRIKSEN Pout Preserve Hydrating Peptide Lip Treatment Strawberry Sorbet  are good options.
Okays that’s it I really hope this helped. This took forever to do!!   lemme know If you need anymore help with skincare!!🩷🩷

Re: I don't know what toner to use

#1 skincare product you need is sunscreen. I promise you, your future self will thank you! I wish I started younger and really knew more about sun damage. It will make all the difference in your skin if you take care of it starting at a young age. Everyday, rain or shine and reapply every 2 hours. I cannot emphasize sunscreen and its importance.

Re: I don't know what toner to use

Hey try glow recipe I think it'd be a perfect match for you!

Re: I don't know what toner to use

I would use the bubble spray it is a toner, it’s feels nice. Have you thought about maybe glow recipe?

Re: I don't know what toner to use

Spoiler

I've heard glow recipe isn't good for young skin is that true?

Re: I don't know what toner to use

Well glow recipe isn’t bad for kids but there are a lot of items they have that aren’t good for young skin. (Such as most of their serums) but I’m not saying that their products don’t work for kids but you might want to stick to a more affordable brand where their products are made for adults and kids, such as bubble, byoma, ect.

Re: I don't know what toner to use

I used toner as a young woman, but even when my skin was oilier and I tended to break out I stopped using it. The 2 most important products for your face are cleanser and SPF. I use #KoraOrganics Turmeric Brightening & Exfoliating Mask as an everyday cleanser. It doesn’t damage my skin even though I’m 66 years old. Sometimes I use it with my small #Foreo.

I prefer to use SPFs that don’t damage ocean reefs.  I like the #Innisfree Daily UV Defense Sunscreen.

Moisturizers are important, too, even if you break out.  Right now I use #CharlotteTilburys Magic Cream, but I switch from time to time.  I do love Biossance Mini Omega Repair Deep Hydration Moisturizer + Squalane 0.5 oz / 15 mL , probably a larger size though!

You might want to consider using a retinol serum at night. I have a prescription for tretinoin, so cannot recommend any.

Re: I don't know what toner to use

@hellohowru  Welcome to the world of skincare! A good routine at any age can be as simple as this:

  1. Cleanser (PM, optional AM) - a non-drying one that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight, stripped, or “squeaky clean.” Cetaphil, CeraVe, and Vanicream make good effective cleansers; you’ll find them at your local drugstore or (if you’re in the US) Target. You could even try a Bubble cleanser if you want, though I can’t personally speak to that brand.

I wrote “optional AM” up there because some folks don’t need to wash their face in the morning. I’m in my 50s and often just gently wipe my face down in the AM with a wet plush microfiber cloth (like a Makeup Eraser). If I do need a morning wash, I might just use micellar water and focus just on the parts of my face that need it, usually just around my eyes.

  2. Moisturizer (AM & PM) - while your skin’s still damp (but not dripping wet), apply your Bubble moisturizer to help seal in hydration instead of dryness.

  3. Broad spectrum sunscreen (AM) - apply generously to all skin exposed to sunlight (hairline, eyelids, ears, behind ears, nape of neck if exposed, etc.) all year long, regardless of weather or season. If the sun’s above the horizon and you’re outside or sitting next to an uncovered window (including sitting in a window seat of a car or other vehicle), wear sunscreen. Reapply every couple hours—or in your case, during the school year (if you don’t sit by an uncovered window), apply in the morning and then reapply before you go outside during the day, then reapply again before you leave school for the day. That’s also a good way for older office-working folks to reapply during day.

Doesn’t really matter if the sunscreen is mineral/physical (contains zinc oxide), chemical, or a hybrid: all 3 types work mostly the same way, and one’s not safer than the others unless you find out you’re sensitive/allergic to a specific UV filter (an ingredient that protects skin from UV rays, such as zinc oxide and avobenzone). Zinc oxide tends to leave a visible white layer on skin, though some mineral sunscreens have less white cast than others. Chemical sunscreens are usually invisible on skin. Hybrid sunscreens may or may not be visible on skin.

Which sunscreen’s best for you depends a lot on your personal preferences. If your eyes are sensitive like mine and you find that chemical sunscreens make ‘em burn/sting, try using a mineral sunscreen around your eyes. My favorite mineral sunscreen is Native Unscented Sunscreen, available at Target or direct from the brand. They make a facial version and a body version; try the body version on your face to save money. (Body sunscreens usually come in larger sized and cost less per ounce than facial sunscreens.) My favorite chemical sunscreen is Supergoop! Unseen Sunscreen Invisible Broad Spectrum SPF 40 PA +++  , but other good options are Bondi Sands SPF 50 Fragrance Free Sunscreen Lotion (I use this body sunscreen on my face and body and order it direct from the brand, though Amazon might also have it) and various Black Girl Sunscreen products. If you have a local Trader Joe’s, they make a pretty good Supergoop Unseen Sunscreen dupe called Trader Joe’s Daily Facial Sunscreen. Oh, and many sunscreens contain at least one good moisturizing ingredient (dimethicone, shea butter, squalane, etc.), so you can even skip the moisturizer step up there and just let sunscreen pull double duty. I do that during summer.

I left toner out of that list because it’s not a necessary skincare step for many people. For now, get your skin used to that routine up there. If you find your skin seems to need a little help—maybe it feels very dry and flaky in some places, or you start getting acne, or you notice lots of redness that won’t go away, etc.—then you can think about adding more products to that routine: insert a “treatment” step between cleanser and moisturizer, and look for products with ingredients that’ll address your skin’s needs. Always build your skincare routine around what your particular skin needs, not what products are trending anywhere or what influencers claim you should buy. We don’t all have the same skin, so beyond the basics of wash, moisturize, and sunscreen, we don’t need the same products/steps.

Re: I don't know what toner to use

Thank you so much!

Re: I don't know what toner to use

@hellohowru  I personally would say that toner is not a necessary skincare step for everyone. I do like to use a toner myself, but if you are looking to save some money and time with your routine, you don't really need it. Especially if you are just starting out and are on a budget, I would recommend focusing on the basics, at least at first.

The most important steps for a skincare routine are:

1. cleanse

2. treat (i.e. serum) - this step is for targeting specific skincare concerns you may have, like acne, redness, etc.

3. moisturize

and don't forget 4. sunscreen! (in the morning)

As for what specific products to use, that really depends on your skin type and concerns - I can't really recommend any specific products without knowing more info. Someone with oily skin would benefit from different products than someone with dry skin, and so on. I do think in general Bubble is a good and affordable brand with good products for teens, so that may be a good place to start. Especially for a young teen, you can find some great quality and affordable products at the drugstore, you really don't need to spend a ton of money on "prestige" brands.

Hope this helps, and feel free to tag me with any questions!
