Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

Iโ€™ve heard great things about both of these products but not sure which one to get. I have sensitive acne prone skin which leans me towards tarte but I think I toner should be more of a hydrating base. What do you think? Any suggestions would help. Heard good things about Kielโ€™s toner as well....help! Lol

Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

I use the fresh rose deep hydration facial toner and I have very sensitive skin. doesn't dry my face and leaves it feeling very clean!

RE: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

@AshJen88 I loooove Tarte Knockout but itโ€™s an acid toner. If your skin is sensitive, you will experience redness and tingle. I would suggest using it at night, 1/2 times a week at first so your skin becomes accustomed to it. It will exfoliate, clear your pores, even out skintone and texture...all these amazing things. I would use the Fresh right after Knockout. Acids are our best friends and Knockout is in my top 3!

FRESH!!!

Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

Mario Badescu's rosewater spray can be used as a toner, doesn't irritate my sensitive skin.

Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

A great toner for sensitive acne prone skin is the Clarins Extra-Comfort Toning Lotion. I've had a wonderful experience: leaves face soft and clean, yet not irritating at all!

Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

@AshJen88 I'm not sure either one is great.  Beautypedia gives Fresh Rose Deep Hydration Toner 1/5 stars:

Spoiler

What a shockingly bad formula. We could just stop there but you deserve to know the details.

Rose Deep Hydration Facial Toner comes in clear bottle with rose petals floating in its liquid formula. While that may look pretty and seem soothing from the outside, its fragranced formula is anything but hydrating or beautiful for skin in any way. In fact, this is little more than eau de cologne, and that's not skincare.

Chief among the fragrant offenders is rose oil, which in combination with the other fragrance chemicals, poses a distinctive risk of aggravating skin. (See More Info for the full repercussions of fragrance on skin.)

Aside from that issue, this toner offers some beneficial skin-replenishing ingredients and a hydrating texture ideal that could have been great for dry skin. Considering that you can get that from a toner that omits irritating fragrance, we suggest checking out our top-rated toners instead.

PROS:
  • Hydrating texture.
  • Contains some beneficial skin-replenishing ingredients.
CONS:
  • Potently fragranced, which spells trouble for all skin types, especially sensitive.
  • The smell is so strong that it actually gave one our staffers a headache!
More Info:

Daily use of products that contain a high amount of fragrance, whether the fragrant ingredients are synthetic or natural, causes a chronic sensitizing reaction on skin.

This reaction in turn leads to all kinds of problems, including disrupting skin's barrier, worsening dryness, increasing or triggering redness, depleting vital substances in skin's surface, and generally preventing skin from looking healthy, smooth, and hydrated. Fragrance free is always the best way to go for all skin types.

A surprising fact: Even though you can't always see or feel the negative effects of fragrant ingredients on skin, the damage will still be taking place, even if it's not evident on the surface. Research has demonstrated that you don't need to see or feel the effects of irritation for your skin to be suffering. Much like the effects from cumulative sun damage, the negative impact and the visible damage from fragrance may not become apparent for a long time.

And it gives Tarte Knockout Tingling Treatment 2/5:

Spoiler

Tarte's Knockout Tingling Treatment is one of those products we wish we could give a higher rating, but it includes ingredients that just make it bad news all-around (not to mention how it perpetuates some skincare myths).

Knockout Tingling Treatment comes in a plastic bottle with a twist-off cap. The texture is a water-like fluid that you dispense onto a cotton pad or your fingers. It's easy to smooth onto skin, and delivers an immediate brightening effect.

Reviewing the ingredient list, things start off great! There's skin-restoring niacinamide along with exfoliating acids like lactic acid, gluconolactone, malic acid, and salicylic acid. Even better is that the pH of this product is 3.3, meaning all these acids are at the proper pH to exfoliate skin.

That's where things start to go downhill. Tarte adds acetic acid (the main acid found in vinegar), along with sensitizing horseradish root extract, myrrh extract, myrtus communis extract, and sulfur. Ouch!

This leads to another issue with this product: Tarte labels this as a "tingling treatment" and in its advertising says, "you'll like the burn, but love the return!" We cannot stress enough that good skincare shouldn't be painful! While it's true that high concentrations of AHA can sting skin if it's abraded (for instance, if you've used a harsh scrub beforehand) or extra-sensitive, as a rule skincare shouldn't sting, burn, or tingle. Those sensations are your skin's way of telling you that it's being irritated, which is pro-aging.

As a side note, the burning sensation that's experienced with this product (and we tried it more than once and can attest it does sting!) isn't the result of the acids, rather it's those sensitizing ingredients we mentioned earlier.

It's a shame, because otherwise this is a great exfoliant. But the issues this could cause for skin aren't worth it; you're much better off with one of the alternatives you'll find on our list of Best AHA or BHA exfoliants.

PROS:
  • Contains beneficial AHAs and salicylic acid, at a pH where they are effective as exfoliants.
CONS:
  • Contains several skin-sensitizing ingredients.
  • Skincare shouldn't burn or tingle!

Oh wow. Thatโ€™s good to know. Thank your feedback ๐Ÿ™‚

Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

Hi, I almost purchased Fresh rose toner but after reading reviews, it seemed to just make people break out more? So I decided not to and went instead with Bosnia's balancing facial tonic. It is great for sensitive skin and is great for cleaning out and tightening pores. I'm not too familiar with any other toners.

RE: Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

Thank you for your input. Iโ€™ll have to look into Bosniaโ€™s toners. I also heard olehenriksenโ€™s oil balancing toner is good. Its just a matter of picking something out of many to choose from lol

RE: Re: Fresh rose hydrating toner or tarte knockout toner?

Definitely! And you can't try them all out or that will mess up your skin more lol. Boscia also has a clear complexion toner too.
