I am thinking about making the switch to a natural deodorant. There are so many choices I don’t even know where to start. I don’t usually sweat a lot. What would you recommend?
Thanks for posting @faeriegirl. I've considered natural deodorant and so I appreciate seeing all these informative answers.
Oh girl @faeriegirl I've got you covered. My reason for switching was because out of nowhere (through allergy testing) I learned I was allergic to Propylene Glycol, and Aluminum. I also have a severe sensitivity to Baking Soda. Trust me when I say, over the course of a year I had spent $500 on Natural Deodorants trying to find one without those 3 ingredients that ACTUALLY WORKED. I would get super excited in the first few days, then smell something funky or break out in a rash.
I Then I came across Routine Cream. I use the Baking Soda free ones, Blackberry Betty and Sexy Sadie. I never smell (unless its of lovely blackberries or orange) and zero irritation.
The one that has worked the best for me (I don't like to use paste deodorants, so that rules out a lot of them,) is Crystal Mineral Deodorant Towelettes (the purple one,) in the lavender white tea scent.
I see that the wipes were discontinued, but it still is available in the spray.
@faeriegirl Not necessarily. I, for example, never had that "rough", "stinky transition" period. And I, personally, don't know anybody who went through it. But, it is possible, yes. Heard about some people dealing with it.
Also, just an fyi in case you don't know it already, natural deodorants are not antiperspirants. A lot of people expect them to prevent/slow down sweating like your regular aluminum-based stuff. And then they are disappointed and bash them when they don't deliver. No. They are "just" de-odorants!
@faeriegirl I use the one from Kopari, Native and Biossance.
I've tried like a million natural deodorants and two that work best are Routine (not at Sephora), and Kopari. Routine is a paste and it actually keeps you semi-dry and lasts quite a while. I use Kopari for days that I won't be sweating that much and I also bring it when I'm on the go and need to reapply throughout the day (because I find you HAVE to with natural deodorant)
@faeriegirl I've tried many, and the only one that works for me ( aside from the stuff I make myself ), and it works fantastically, is Schmidt's. The regular formula ( Ylang Ylang + Calendula is my fav! ). It is true, it seems many people are sensitive to it. I've never had any problems with it, though. Been using it for years. Do you know if you are sensitive to baking soda, shea butter, wax or essential oils? Those are the usual "offenders", the ones some people are sensitive to.
They do have sensitive skin formula without baking soda ( it's magnesium based ), as well. It seems that baking soda is what causes the most grief to people. And it is quite nice ( Coconut Pineapple is my fav. It smells delish, too! ). But for me personally it doesn't work as well as the regular formula. I need loads of baking soda for a natural deodorant to work for me. 😛 And Schmidt's seems to has the highest concentration of it in their regular formula. That's why they work so well for me. But if you are sensitive to baking soda, I'd steer clear from the regular ones.
Edit: I don't ever have to reapply my Schmidt's regular formula. No matter what I do. No matter how active I am. It never lets me down smell. Never! And I have some very active days, where I run around all day long and sweat a lot. I never have to drag my deodorant around with me.
The sensitive skin formula one ( without baking soda ) I do have to reapply. But only when I'm very active. And I am not talking "one hour or so in the gym" active. No. More like if you're active all day long. So, even that one, which I consider not to be as effective for me as the regular formula, is actually great compared to all the others I've tried that made me stinky in no time. I use this one when I am at home and I know I am not gonna be running around like crazy.
The thinner the consistency, the less effective they are from my experience. Roll ons, sprays, and other kind of liquids do absolutely nothing for me. Pastes and (paste like or solid ) sticks are the most effective for me. But, I don't even use pastes ( in jars ) anymore because the Schmidt's ( which is in a stick ) is just perfect for me. Yay! 🙂 ( I do prefer sticks, but I don't really mind the one in jars, either. )
