Aging skin!!

Help! I just turned 60, in this last year I’ve been under severe stress & my skins showing it with more & deeper wrinkles, for the first time I have pores showing up too. I exfoliate with several different products at least 2 x’s a week & my face stays dry & flaky no matter what moisturizers I use. Do I need to exfoliate more often? Try a peel of some kind? Go have one of those services done on my facial skin at Ulta? Please help me! Much love to you all

Re: Aging skin!!

@Deidra13  Sounds to me like your skin is flaky because it’s irritated. What exfoliation products do you use? What’s the rest of your skincare routine (steps and products)? Your skin might be sensitive to ingredients in one or more of your products. Or, you might’ve broken your skin’s moisture barrier by over-exfoliating. Either way, you need to repair your skin barrier.

I recommend stopping all exfoliation for at least a couple of weeks. Exfoliating your skin in its current state will only do more damage to your moisture barrier. Focus on hydrating and moisturizing the heck out of your skin for now. You can restart exfoliation once your skin barrier’s in better shape.

Use a gentle moisturizing cleanser like CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser or Paula’s Choice Hydralight Cleanser. Follow with some kind of watery hydrating/moisturizing product—a toner, serum, or mist—that contains no perfuming essential oils or alcohol (alcohol denat. or ispopropyl alcohol), but does contain some beneficial ingredients. I use e.l.f. Hydrating Water Essence daily, and recently fell in love with  Youth To The People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist with Peptides 4 oz/ 118 mL . If your face is dry after that, tap on a little water, just enough to dampen your skin. Then immediately apply an occlusive moisturizer—either a cream or facial oil, or even both if you want—to seal in that hydration. My favorite occlusive moisturizer is plain ol’ Aquaphor Ointment. It’s petrolatum based and contains mineral oil; contrary to popular belief, those 2 ingredients aren’t terrible. In fact, petroleum jelly is one of the best things you can apply to barrier damaged skin: it promotes healing and acts as the skin barrier you’ve broken. For daytime, use a sunscreen with minimum SPF of 30.

And of course, a dermatologist can give you more personalized recommendations and diagnose any skin condition(s) you might now have.

Aging skin!!

You only exfoliate twice a week. Also, consider the following products to minimize your Pores. Dr. Dennis Gross Pore Refining Serum use this after Essense in the morning. At Night use a Hydrating Moisturizer Fresh Deep Hydration, Milk Moisturizer or Laniege Cream Moisturizer. Lastly, add an oil to your nightly routine. YTP Prickly Pear Oil or Farmacy Glow Oil. Do this nightly and your skin will be more hydrated and you will minimize those fine lines and wrinkles. NO MORE OVER EXFOLIATING!! PLEASE!!

Re: Aging skin!!

Hello! @Deidra13

What type of product are you using to exfoliate, a granulated exfoliator or chemical? My favourite exfoliating product that has stood the test of time year after year is Dr. Dennis Gross Skincare Alpha Beta® Extra Strength Daily Peel Pads 30 Treatments + 5 Bonus . I follow it up with a heavy dose of hydration. I’m very accustomed to chemical exfoliators so I can use them daily without issue, however if you have no tolerance you may want to start once-twice a week. I follow up with HERBIVORE - Emerald CBD + Adaptogens Deep Moisture Glow Oil and Drunk Elephant Lala Retro™ Nourishing Whipped Refillable Moisturizer 1.69 oz/ 50 mL . I rarely, if ever have a dry patch of skin.
