Advice for skin Beginner

Hii im not sure if anyone will respond but i want to star taking care of my skin but i don't know were to start and what products to use same with make up . Any advice please and thanks ❤️.

RE: Advice for skin Beginner

As mentioned above i would figure out your skin type and your skin care goals (also how is the weather where you live? - that plays another factor in the products i use) I myself started with face wash, cleansing oil (Clinique take the day off), face moisturizer, and mineral sunscreen. I have built my routine from there but I believe those are the essentials! I have taken pictures of which products I use for reference. I change depending on my skin. P. S. I have dry skin so my ultimate goal is always to maintain a good balance of moisturizer, hence the different moisturizer’s. I live in Arizona where there’s lots of dry heat haha so I don’t always use the Clinique moisturizer, except on dry winter months.

Hi @lizleo1218 !  I completely agree with the other posters and will just reiterate that a bare minimum skincare routine should have a daily cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen.  Depending on who you ask (dermatologists), the number one anti-aging secret is daily sunscreen, even if you'll only be in direct sunlight while running errands or something.

I'm guessing most of us on this forum have long since graduated into complex routines with lots of active skincare ingredients, but consistent use of those three are the basic starting point.

What I currently have in my routine:

@Anonymous I love all the CeraVe in your routine!  I just started using their Hydrating Cleanser, and my skin has really liked it so far.

@greeneyedgirl107 yay another cerave fan!  😄  as a brand i know it's relatively unsexy, but as a life-long eczema sufferer, i really have to credit cerave for consistently putting out fragrance-free, non-irritating products that soothe my angry skin!  i think they were one of the first skincare lines to use ceramides, which is what attracted me in the first place.  Although I've found other great products and brands, cerave is always the default i return to when my skin acts up, especially the PM moisturizer.

@Anonymous Well said!

Re: Advice for skin Beginner

@Anonymous agree with the others...figure out your skin type first.  Then identify what your skincare goals are (ie: anti-aging, acne, hyperpigmentation, etc).  There are a lot of products out there so it's overwhelming to try and figure out what to use without first knowing what you want to accomplish.  For example, I have combo acne-prone skin and my main concerns are hyperpigmentation caused by acne.  So I use a lot of AHA/BHA containing products and Vitamin C.  I play around with some other ingredients as well.  But find out what your goal is, then start with one ingredient and build from there.  In general, you may want to consider cleanser, toner, serum, moisturizer, and sunscreen just as your base.

Thanks so much for the help and advice ❤️

RE: Advice for skin Beginner

Definitely determine what skin type you have first! There is definitely no one-size fits all for each type, but it gives you a better idea of where to start! You can google it or Sephora has a questionnaire online/on the app. Once you figure out your skin type, you can also pick your skin concerns that you’d like to take care of(clogged pores, dryness, wrinkles, uneven tone..etc.) and search for products this way 🙂 but a general skincare routine should most definitely include a good cleanser (double cleanse if you wear makeup - find a makeup remover of a sort, follow it with a cleanser), an exfoliant to help with skin cell turnover (improving the look of skin in the process), a moisturizer that suits your skin type, as well as sun protection! Sun protection is so important regardless of age. Anything else in addition to your routine is a bonus and is usually targeting a skin concern. Feel free to ask more questions !! 🙂

❤️ thanks soo muchhh for the help I really appreciate it❤️

RE: Advice for skin Beginner

If you are changing your routine, definitely try changing only one thing at a time. It’ll help prevent your skin from freaking out and this way you can also tell how it is working for your skin!

RE: Advice for skin Beginner

I would start simply, first determine if your oily, combo, dry, sensitive, acne. Then pick items fro your routine. But I would start with a good face wash and moisturizer and build from there. Only add one item at a time to your routine and give it time to see how it affects your skin before changing anything. Also if you have sensitive skin, like me, do a patch test for 24hours to make sure your not allergic, before putting it on your face.
