AHA not Ok?

Can I use more than one product with different AHA in my skincare routine? I have a gentle toner and serum that I use nightly -both of which contain AHA. Additionally I use the Herbivore Blue Tansy mask 1-2 times a week and it contains both AHA and BHA, which I thought you weren't suppose to mix? Why it is ok with this mask and should I be using my serum or toner before/after the mask? If anyone knows the answer to either question please let me know, thanks! 🙂

RE: AHA not Ok?

Also, the reason you don't want to mix AHA with BHA is because it's like you are double exfoliating, making your skin sensitive. The mask may be formulated to not cause too much sensitivity, I would only use once a week. Make sure you use sunscreen when using these products. The same goes with mixing AHA with retinol, it's double peeling. If you have sensitive skin I would not overload on the AHA's, maybe cycle through one each day. I've made the mistake of mixing these products and it was not pretty. I normally use products from lightest to thickest. I sometimes use face masks after toners or after essences and serums, as long as it's before moisturizing because that seals it all in.

Re: AHA not Ok?

It all depends on your skin. I would watch to see any changes that may occur in your skin though @Astraean87, even though my skin is not dry, particular oily or anything, your routine sounds like it's a bit too loaded with AHA. My skin likes BHA, and I don't even use more than one product with BHA at once, and only in the AM.

Personally, on days you use the mask I'd probably skip any other products with other AHA (your toner/serum currently - switch to one without). Again, it'll depend on your skin.

I love the Herbivore Blue Tansy mask and I think that since it's a mask you rinse off, it's not a big deal that both AHA and BHA are present. In addition, it probably has something to do with the concentration, the source of the AHA/BHA and the other ingredients in the mask which may help to battle irritation.

There is such thing as TOO MUCH exfoliation.

I was reading an article the other day on this. Hope this info helps. Are You Using Your Exfoliating Acids Wrong? - Refinery29 https://apple.news/AcD0h8fdjQJiIgUmwE8IZvQ

Re: AHA not Ok?

I have really sensitive skin, so if I'm using a mask with an AHA and/or BHA in it I will always rinse it off afterwards and continue on with my routine.  Otherwise I will wake up the next morning with my face looking and feeling like I have a 2nd degree burn on it.  And I certainly don't use any other products with an AHA in it that night.  On the other hand, my best friend is able to use about 10 products with acids in it without any difficulty.  So, sadly, like most things with skin care it just really depends on your skin type.

RE: AHA not Ok?

Hi. A product that contains multiple acids has been formulated to do so. I think you are okay. I would just see how your skin reacts when using different products with different acids. It may (not) be too much. For wash off masks, I usually apply them after cleansing. Once it’s washed off, I start with my skincare steps. I’m sure others may apply product before apply a masks. I just don’t have enough patience to have their properties to skin in, so I feel I am just washing off and wasting product if I apply them before a wash off mask. Hope this helps!
