What's in a name?

Hi, beauty-lovers! Some recent posts here and my own beauty journey made me curious about one thing: how and to what extent does product naming affect your attitude to it? Would you buy a product just because you like its name? Or, vice versa, would naming that you hate deter you from buying something? Please share your thoughts about names of your favourite brands and products, or, on the other hand, most hated ones.

Re: What's in a name?

@Krysa13 I would like to say that the name doesn’t matter to me but anything that has the word “jelly”, or mentions something edible like the benefit cosmetics “cookie” highlighter, or the marshmellow and honeydew me up primer from NYX, the strawberry jam blush from physicians formula or “butter” as some examples, and anything that mentions roses or petals ALWAYS gets my attention. Like I literally HAVE to look at the product if it mentions any of those things I listed, I’m already inclined to like it or at least be highly interested😂😂

Re: What's in a name?

@Krysa13 the name doesn't matter to me.

I really did want the job naming paint colors or nail polish colors.  I think it would be fun.

Re: What's in a name?

@CorgiMommy I always wanted to do that, too!

Re: What's in a name?

@greeneyedgirl107 so I am not the only one, my friends think it is weird

Re: What's in a name?

You're not @CorgiMommy ...or we all are.  I still legit want that job 🤣

Re: What's in a name?

Product benefits and brand marketing should compliment each other, @Krysa13.

Re: What's in a name?

Your name in a shade! I was thinking of this the other day. There's so many shades/colors with actual names, especially like Tom Ford and some Violet Voss Palettes.  I could see buying a shade because it had my name haha. The only product with my name ( I just typed my name into the sephora search bar) is the  Buxom Full-On™ Plumping Lip Polish Gloss Kimberly  .

Does anyone have products they bought because it was their name??

Re: What's in a name?

@Kim888 Oh yes!! I am like this too! I wanted to buy the Buxom lipgloss in my name, but I couldn't bring myself to bc the colour just didn't suit me. If I recall correctly, it was this mix between a light pink and nude with lots of glitter. Now I can't even find it on the site haha. Guess it wasn't meant to be.

Re: What's in a name?

I own the NARS lipstick in Rita -- and I love the colour too 🙂

Re: What's in a name?

@Kim888 I have! I own Zoya Lauren and the Napoleon Perdis Lauren Mattetastic Lipstick, which coincidentally is my perfect nude. It's too bad that the brand pulled out of the US market shortly after I discovered it, though.

Also, check out the thread below! 😉

@lmi82 ohh thanks! I will check that thread out

Re: What's in a name?

I wouldn't buy something just because I like it's name...that I can think of. But I would definitely not buy something because of it's name. Whether it be a person or thing I don't like or an overly sexual name. Sex does not sell to me.

Re: What's in a name?

@Samtian yeah, I think the overtly sexual names are such a cheap trick.

Re: What's in a name?

Names don't deter me from buying anything, although they may get a hefty eye-roll (Super Orgasm NARS? Really?).  I am a bit of a sucker and have purchased more than one item because of the name.  It's typically when something is named after a loved one or a place I particularly love.  I'm also a sucker for anything named after the Greek & Roman gods and mythology.  Oddly enough, NARS keeps popping into my head as the brand whose names I either loathe or love!

I am with you on this point! Rarely, I  can buy something just because I really liked the naming. Also, I couldn't resist the NARS Audacious lipstick featuring my name :).

Re: What's in a name?

@michelleshops I hate the name "orgasm".  I hate all the "cheeky" sex named products.  Better than sex mascara.  Deep throat.  Etc.  It strikes me as a little gauche and my mom would be clutching her pearls so hard if I ever repeated those names in front of her.  LOL, poor mom.  I find the names a bit embarrassing... which is weird because I'm not the bashful type.

In college, I was specifically assigned a very graphic chapter of the "V4gina Monologues" to read aloud to the class probably because I am so brash.  So if uncomfortable with it... something must be wrong!  It just seems like a very cheap thrill.

Re: What's in a name?

Same @itscarin I swear like a sailor but this like this make me so uncomfortable.  I can't tell someone I'm wearing Deep Throat, I'm a lady!

Re: What's in a name?

😂. I took all of my lipsticks off of my vanity while my parents visited because of the names.  Yes, I admit I bought a few mostly because of the names but they were still colors I’ll wear. I have also avoid some because the names made me roll my eyes. If I truely liked the color I may have gotten them. Maybe.

Re: What's in a name?

Oddly, though I am a name-sensitive person, sex-related names somehow bother me the least. But the Too Faced shade Bless Her Heart really made me raise my eyebrows. As well as more than half the names in their Chocolate Gold palette. And one that is not offensive but frankly weird in my opinion is UD Baked Cowboy -- what might that even mean?

Re: What's in a name?

The only product name I can recently recall provoking strong feelings is the Flesh line. Firm Flesh Thickstick? Get the *$%^! outta here! I'm not offended by it, it's just lame. I think I'm more affected by packaging than names. While I wouldn't say that packaging makes me more likely to buy a product, it does leave a positive impression at least (Tom Ford, Hourglass, Herbivore), and there's definitely packaging out there that turns me off (looking at you, Too Faced Festival Collection).
