TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

I have a question about TSA regulations regarding liquid lipsticks and mascara.

I understand that lipstick is considered a "solid" but what about liquid lipstick? Where do you guys put your liquid lipsticks and mascara? In your 3-1-1 quart size bag or your regular makeup bag? Can you guys share what you put in both of your bags?

Thanks!

Re: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

I've actually had a small tube of hand lotion, squeeze tube lip balm, mascara, and liquid concealer go unnoticed without being in the clear plastic bag. Within the last year, I've probably had those things inside my makeup bag vs. the clear bag and breezed straight through security (domestically in Canada and traveling to the US) With that said, if you don't want to risk confiscation, when in doubt - just put it in the clear bag!

Re: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

@WhatTheEmmi I've been randomly checked quite a few times when traveling, so definitely MOST of my visible liquid-y looking items go into the clear ziplock bag (if you've ever ordered from Glossier, they ship their products in clear, pink, bubble zip baggies which are PERFECT). This includes mascara, glosses, liquid lipsticks, foundation, serums. However, I say most because I will inevitably forget about a moisturizer in my purse, or a lippie in a side pocket somewhere and these have neither been discovered nor discarded. Other make up goes into my regular makeup bag.

Sometimes, I'll feel like sticking it to the man and deliberately NOT put all my liquids in my little clear baggy and I've never been found out either 🙂 I feel like having the clear bag acts as a decoy...

One exception is when I travel internationally. The TSA here are generally slackers that hate their jobs, but this is not necessarily the case abroad and they have been much less flexible (ie one time I was carrying my winter coat and the guys at Heathrow wouldn't let me stuff into my carry-on. I HAD to check my carry-on since I was already "carrying" one personal item).

Re: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

I usually put those items (liquid lipsticks, mascara, setting sprays, foundation) in my clear plastic bag. And my non liquid items i.e. brushes, powders, etc in a makeup bag. I do this just to avoid any possible problems. My clear bag is definitely bigger than what they say they limit, but I've never had problems with that. TSA has never been strict with me about liquids but not everyone has had that experience. I know someone who had her bag flagged for bomb testing and had every single skincare/cosmetic in her bag swabbed (and she didn't have anything in proper bags or separated, who knows what set them off)

RE: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

I have been stopped before. The took my lipgloss so I always put it in a clear bag

Re: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

I've never been stopped for make-up.

RE: TSA Regulations for Skincare/Makeup Products

They stopped me once when I had an essence bottle which was more than 100 ml but never got stopped any other time and I travel 2-3 times a month. Generally carry 50 ml or smaller bottles of shampoo serum moisturiser etc. Hope this helps.

I travel every other week for work. I have never had TSA...

I travel every other week for work. I have never had TSA stop me for my makeup at all, not even foundation. You should have no problem with liquid lipstick or mascara in your makeup bag. Hope that helps!
