alright, here it is. use this thread to request swatches. the guidelines are up to you and your needs: single swatches, comparison swatches, specific skin tone swatches
when comparisons are requested, feel free to provide whatever you have of that request--i want anyone to participate and contribute if they want to. have fun, hope this is helpful !
I see something in your future @blackkitty2014 ! 🔮🤣 I wonder how the balms are but they gotta be so pricey. Sheesh. Understatement I realize! Adore the shadow, not sure how long-lasting it is on its own but I have used a shadow stick or other cream shadow underneath so it works well that way.
@blackkitty2014 , same. I have notifications on, and missed some them. Kind of helps, like I have to set them up again vs just getting what's currently in stock.
Yes, @Sunnysmom , the purple one was interesting, as well as the olive set and the blue, but I'll likely pass on these or plead my case to the court of hubbs on why these should be gifted. 🤣. The purple will be a solo quest.
I love the boutique recap, btw. TY for the swatches.
I also think they refills are magnetic? Right, @WinglessOne , like you can pop them into a different magnetic compact and it should work?
I have all the confidence in your negotiating skills @danielledanielle ! 😂 The purple did look stunning. I’m glad I’m not tempted by all the other stuff in the boutique or it would have been big trouble. The more you hang around there are so many fun things to discover! Yes they are magnetic so I just have to get my own palette to put em in. Is Z a good one? I have none! 🤦🏻♀️ Lazy and just buy them as is usually.
@Sunnysmom The best empty palettes I’ve ever had are MUFE’s Artist Color Refillable Makeup Palettes. I don’t think they make ‘em anymore, at least not the small ones. I have several of the “XL” ones that are really just big enough to hold 6 MUFE rectangular shadow singles:
One of my MUFE “XL” palettes holding 2 Rose Inc. blushes.
Old screenshot of a product page for MUFE Artist Color Palette size XL.
This size used to cost less than $5 USD. Only place I see them available now is Amazon for nearly double that price, and I don’t think I’d trust the seller. But if you find these anywhere: they are FANTASTIC sturdy little travel palettes made of metal, with a very strong magnet bed, and they have a mirror. Had I known MUFE would discontinue them, I’d have bought more. I used to give them as gifts, and people would ask where I got ‘em. Heck, you can probably find this exact palette design/build without the MUFE branding on Amazon, though they might come with removable pans.
I see MUFE does still sell 2 of the bigger palettes… they’re the newer designed ones though, with fully removable (not hinged attached) lids that have clear plastic inserts. They’re not as sturdy as the old ones, but they do have a good magnet. They’re hiding at MUFE’s site under “More > All Tools” if you wanna look for them, and they’re 25% off right now. Note that the “XL” size they have right now is a truly large palette; you’ll see photos in customer reviews.
Oh thank you so much @WinglessOne I’ll have to look at those. They definitely sound much better than the other little cardboard ones. Especially for such a beautiful product ; seems like the wrong kind of high low to do. 🤣 What’s your guidance size wise do you think for quads like this LV? I’ve been looking at the sizes of others and a little tricky because of the shape of these, naturally. lol
No problem, @Sunnysmom! Earlier today I was gonna answer your question with “I think the LV refills will easily fit inside the 6-pan MUFE palette.” But then I thought, am I SURE about that? How will I know without measuring it? So here I am, several hours after I hearted your reply (couldn’t fulfill my burning need to know investigate til I was home again tonight), with what I hope is a helpful comparison/info photo:
Measurements are of the full usable interior space of the MUFE 6-pan refill palette. The magnet doesn’t cover the entire palette bed but it doesn’t have to: it’s so strong, nothing’s falling outta that palette except shadow kick-up. 😄
I’m pretty sure you have at least one LE palette, yes? These are the 3 LE singles I bought when they first released; I figured they’d be a good size reference for you, along with a Blitz Astral quad. (These quad pans are the same size as Mothership pans.) I don’t know the LV pan sizes, but I assume they’re not far off from Pat’s—even with their petal cutout shape.
In fact, that cutout shape might make ‘em even easier to fit inside this MUFE palette and conserve more space than I did with my staggered layout. The LV pans might fit in two columns (two pans each), which would leave room for two or three other brands’ single shadows.
Here’s an external shot of that MUFE palette:
External dimensions: width 4.25" x height 2.75" x depth 0.5"
If you’d rather arrange your LV refills into the LV flower layout, you’ll need a square-shaped palette. I don’t know what interior size you’ll need because I don’t know how big LV’s pans are; you’ll need to measure them to figure that out. The only square magnetic palette that comes to mind (that aren’t cardboard and don’t have weak magnets) is the “M” size one MUFE still has at their site—but that one’s much larger than what you need, unless you plan to also store other single pans (shadows, blushes, highlighters, etc.) in it.
If you’re okay with a big palette though, you might also consider Adept’s empty palettes. Their newer stackable one looks good. I have their original double-sided palette, which is very sturdy but also very bulky and heavy. I personally wouldn’t have a problem storing LV refills in a cardboard palette unless I was really afraid they’d be unprotected that way. I mean, LV’s fancy boxes are made of cardboard and some people collect those. 😂
You could also DIY a palette: you’ll need a container with whatever type of lid you prefer, and a strong enough magnet to put inside it. You can buy self-adhesive magnet sheets at craft stores or Amazon, though you’ll wanna read customer reviews on their magnetic hold strength. The fun part of DIYing a palette is picking any container you want. Doesn’t have to be a makeup-specific container. Some folks (including me) have used pencil or paint cases. A former coworker repurposed a small round shallow jewelry box (inherited from her grandmother) for her favorite single shadows.
Hope other folks can chime in with more suggestions!
You are amazing @WinglessOne , thank you so very much for all the extra work you did for me on this! I have so many good options now for them. I meant to take a measurement of them too and didn’t, lazy. Lol I don’t care at all about keeping the shape together. Just stick em in a pan protected and I’m good! I have a MUFE highlighter and blush but not these. As you can imagine I probably can not do the DIY 🥹🤣. 1000 years ago I had an Aveda palette, probably long gone and demagnetized too. PS I know who I am finding when I need some project guidance !! Thank you again! 😘
@Sunnysmom Glad I could help!
Today I searched YouTube for reviews where people have put these refills into their own magnetic palettes. I wanted to see what others are using and learn about any issues they had with LV’s pans, since LV claims the refills can’t be used without their own case. 🙄 I found someone who uses a “generic” version of my little MUFE palettes (available at Amazon) and she was able to arrange them like this:
Screenshot of a YouTube video by “Han Beauty 101” showing Louis Vuitton shadow refills inside a non-LV magnetic case.
She accidentally dug her nails into the pans while trying to remove them from the LV case. I’m hearing that issue from other people who’ve bought the full quad + additional refills. When I need to remove pans from any magnetic palette, I use a little magnet (usually Inglot’s little tile with magnet insert) to pick up one corner of a pan. That way I don’t damage shadows.
Anyway, yeah these LV refills should fit fine inside a lotta empty magnetic palettes. Just gotta make sure the magnet’s not weak; customer reviews will reveal that. Viseart sells empty cardboard magnetic palettes but I don’t recommend those: the magnets are too weak, so the only way to keep pans from sliding around is to fill the palette edge to edge with refills. DIYing a magnetic palette’s not as hard as you think. 😉 The only part that takes much effort is cutting a magnetic adhesive sheet to the correct size, or hunting down a right-sized magnet you can glue to the palette base. It is easier/quicker to just buy a palette though. 😅 Whichever palette you choose, I hope it works out for you!
Thanks so much for finding this @WinglessOne , I need to do it soon to prevent any damage, tho at least so far they are protected in their little plastic case and easy to manage. These shades are really very beautiful I have to say. (Pretty humorous for them to say you must use the case or lipstick case. They obviously don’t know how creative we can be! 🤣)
This is great info, @WinglessOne ! Thanks for the research. 🔬
@WinglessOne @Sunnysmom - I used to have one of the ginormous MUFE magnetic palettes. It held about 4x the amount as shown below. I like my Z Palette better--I can see what's inside (bonus points!), the lid flips open easily (magnetic closure), and it has a nice feel (sturdy).
No size is listed on the palette. Inside measurements are just short of 6" x 3 1/4".
Thank you @Titian06 , so helpful! Yes I really don’t care if it’s metal or cardboard and I do love the idea of the open front to see it all as well! This size looks good doesn’t it. I’d hate to add any more to it too! 😂 That is not my plan! Time to get shopping before any of these little rascals become compromised! 😘
@Titian06 A year or two ago, I bought two of those huge old MUFE Pro palettes after scouring the internet for ‘em. I do also have one of the newer redesigned big MUFE Pro palettes; the redesigned version has a clear plastic window in the lid, and the lid’s not attached to the base. I bought the redesign long ago, but decided I’d prefer the old version with opaque hinged lid better. I’m very happy to have them, though I did reinforced their bottoms to keep them from warping.
The Z Palettes are definitely an option, as long as @Sunnysmom is okay with a cardboard palette. Or wait, does Z Palette make any plastic palettes? I mentioned Adept’s newer palette because it’s plastic with a clear magnetic hinged lid, but it’s bigger than needed for an LV quad. 🤔 Good to hear your Z Palette feels sturdy.
Yesterday I went to Inglot’s site to order a couple more AMC Gel Eyeliners. Then I poked around and wow, I can’t believe I forgot Inglot also sells magnetic refill palettes. Most of theirs have removable lids that are held on by magnets (their “Freedom System” palettes). The bamboo palettes have opaque lids, but the plastic ones have clearish lids… “clearish” because the brand name’s printed edge to edge on the lids. Kinda obtrusive on the black palette (“INGLOT” is printed in black all over the lid), but maybe less so with the white palette (name’s printed in white, palette base is white, and the magnet’s white). I had a discount code to use sooo now I have a couple refill palettes coming with my gel liners. 😂 For science!
Ya @WinglessOne I really don’t care I don’t think. I swear I maybe had an Inglot palette or maybe it was just a few lips. Probably that. 🙃
@danielledanielle someone on YouTube shows the lipstick can twist up and down without the case liked Prada and Hermes refills 😘 I think it’s genius to let us twist up and down without the case. I love pretty packaging but I also want something compact to throw in my bag without worrying about damaging my pretty cases
Oh 😯 really?!? @blackkitty2014 , I was referring to the shadows... Now knowing there's a trick to the lipstick 🤔🤔 TY
Oh I’m interested in hearing about the eyeshadow too. If we can pop them in a magnetic case 😘 tempting @danielledanielle
@blackkitty2014 @danielledanielle @Sunnysmom From all the videos I’ve seen, the eyeshadow quad case is magnetic. Each shadow is in its own metal pan that sticks to the magnetic palette. So, you should be able to buy just the shadow refills and drop ‘em into your own magnetic palette.
Very interesting that the lipsticks do work without a case after all! Though I suspect it’s a bit tricky to do, since they’re not really designed to work that way. 🤔 I assume folks are holding/twisting that very narrow band right at the base of the refill? Or you could maybe insert something into the base and twist that way; that’s how I use my Westman Atelier lipstick. (The case is too big and awkward for me to use, so I pull the lipstick outta the case and use the tip of my pinky finger to twist it up and down.)
I haven’t bought any LV items; I passed everything up on purpose. At those prices (and seeing how similar a lot of the shades look to Pat’s own product shade ranges), I wanted to see more people’s reviews first. If I ever do buy something, it’ll probably be one of the satin lipstick refills to see if it’s anywhere near similar to Pat’s discontinued LuxeTrance formula (which I still love, much more than her current SatinAllure formula)—and yeah, probably the brightest purple/orchid shade. Of the quads, the khaki and blue ones interest me; the khaki reminds me a lot of Natasha Denona Mini Gold, one of my favorite ND minis. I need to see more of the purple in action/reviews though.
@WinglessOne @blackkitty2014 @danielledanielle yes the shadows are magnetic so we just have to get another palette for them. So that’s good. I should have mentioned, sorry! The lipstick band is very very thin at the bottom but you can still manage it ok with your fingers. Don’t think you even have to hold it vs just twist it up. Also WIngless, sadly none of the formulas are like our beloved Luxe Pat McG! Boo. 😭 The satin is very smooth and lighter as is the matte. Neither are as heavy as the PM. You should try one for science at some point. I also think the LV are more transparent , PM more opaque. The price is ridiculous but I rationalized that I at least did not buy the shadow compact! 🥹
New Sephora collection colorful special effects eyeliners. So good I got backups because they are limited edition.
