Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I love a full glam face, but let's be honest, I'm not whipping that out everyday 😅

Also, kind of wanted a think tank, because there's been uptick in new to makeup posts... I loved @PDXXXX responses to a few of them

Might be helpful to give six (because that's the theme, but y'know y'all can cheat be creative with that number) products and also list

Skin type

Fave feature to play up

Tools of choice

Example

...

For myself:

Oily Combo Skin

Eyes or lips

Brushes, fingers

Foundation: DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster or Ami Colé Skin-Enhancing Lightweight & Blurring Foundation Stick

Eyes: Danessa Myricks Beauty Linework Paintbrush Fluid Liquid Eyeliner 0.034 oz / 1 ml

Lip: I'll go 90s liner and gloss or deeeeep

DIOR Rouge Dior Contour No-Transfer Lip Liner Pencil (Diormidnight) CLINIQUE Pop Plush™ Creamy Lip Gloss Black Honey Pop 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Anastasia Beverly Hills Brow Wiz® Ultra-Slim Precision Eyebrow Pencil Medium Brown for brows

Setting Spray: Skindinavia or ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Preserve the Serve Luminous Setting Spray 4 oz/ 118 mL (there's a jumbo out now 😲)

I'll usually do my brows while I'm doing my skincare because I look unfinished without them 😅, the Danessa liner I love because I can go so thin, and my lashes are straight, so it gives the illusion of mascara and I can do a little flick to emphasize my eye shape

The Star filter gives a glow and coverage, and the Ami stick is fast.  I like applying from the back of my hand with dots to the face and then buffing out with a brush.  Then I'll hit it with some setting spray.

The lip, I contour a bit, with thickest lines at the edges, and then it's buffed out inward for a nice ombre look.  Then gloss.  If I'm not feeling up to it, gloss just goes on or I'll use CLINIQUE Almost Lipstick Black Honey instead

When I'm done, another hit of spray.

...

You can include your skincare routine if you like, which gives you another six, but emphasize how you prep for makeup vs general routine, if you can

@itsfiit's because those two words do not mesh well together 😂, I say it with the short 'a' sound though

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

shădonzer, it is then @danielledanielle! I'll have to do it more so I get used to saying it.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@heartsmyface  I love this pared-down routine, I am sure you look lovely even with just these products!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I love that mascara so much.  @heartsmyface it's the first thing I ever "loved" at Sephora.

Also, I  guessssss I have to get that LE Gucci blush now 🤷🏽‍♀️💸

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@danielledanielle @It’s in my cart waiting for the sale but I’m watching it closely to make sure it doesn’t go out of stock before then.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Thanks for the tag, @danielledanielle! I’ll come back later with product specifics. I meant to do this + photos earlier today but I ran out of time, and I really want natural daylight for my photos.

For now, I’ll say my basic go-to look is:

  1. Brows - the only makeup I never leave home without (barring emergency evac or something).
  2. Undereyes - either concealer, color corrector, or brightener; sometimes a combo of those, but often just one product.
  3. Lipstick - my favorite makeup category. Even when I was constantly masking, I wore lipstick under my KN95s.

See, that’s just 3, not even 6! 😂 Well okay, it could be 3-6 products if I include setting powder and 2 brow products (pencil + gel, though I don’t always use gel).

Sometimes I add one or more of these to my basic look:

  1. Blush - I do have some go-to shades I’ll mention later.
  2. Eyeliner - even without any eyeshadow, liners can do a lot for my hooded eyes: deepen my lash line, enlarge my eyes, and give me the colorful inner corner I love.
  3. Foundation on & around my nose - depending on how my surface redness looks that day, a green primer/corrector can tone it down. But when I wanna better mask that redness, I apply foundation just to that part of my face.
  4. Eyeshadow - sometimes it’s just a full lid of one color + some outer color smoke. Shadow sticks are great for this.
  5. Mascara - if my eyes aren’t throwing an allergy/infection/irritation tantrum, I might throw on some mascara. Heck, I might use a colorful mascara and completely forgo eyeshadow and/or liner.

Skin type (what I like to call “skin behavior” instead): mostly-dry combo; oily on and around my nose, almost balanced forehead (leans dry in winter and oily in summer; I used to think my forehead was always oily, then I realized I just frequently sweat there), dry everywhere else. Quite reactive/inflammation-prone. Flares red and welts up if I’m not very gentle about rubbing skincare products on it. (Same goes for my body skin.) Hates nearly all essential oils and won’t tolerate too many fragrance components (linalool, limonene, etc.) in a single product. Lavender in all forms (oil, essence, water) is my facial skin’s nemesis.

Favorite feature to play up: lips.

Tools of choice: brushes and fingers.

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Heh heh, yeah I remember you were a faithful lipstick wearer at that time

I appreciate both versions of your basics and can't wait to see what products you list @WinglessOne

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I love this @danielledanielle ! Thanks for the tag! Even tho I clearly love all things makeup and skincare I usually love a quicker routine. Enjoying reading everyone’s lists! I don’t use setting spray, good idea. I need to look into this!

I’m dry usually. Normal ish to dry.

I’m always a lip girl but also with eyes included bec glasses 🤓

I have to use both fingers and some brushes like a good eye, cheek or face. SEPHORA COLLECTION PRO Blush Brush #99  is one of my very favorites.

My go-tos are:

FOUNDATION- DIOR Forever Glow Star Filter Multi-Use Complexion Enhancing Booster 2N  (plus Supergoop! Glowscreen SPF 40 Sunscreen with Hyaluronic Acid + Niacinamide  , doesn’t count bec it’s SPF 😬). Oh, also have to have bit of concealer- dark circles - HAUS LABS BY LADY GAGA Triclone Skin Tech Hydrating + De-puffing Concealer with Fermented Arnica 11 Light Neutral  - ( this is gonna be 6+ danielledanielle. 🙃)

CHEEKS-   HUDA BEAUTY Blush Filter Soft Glow Liquid Blush Black Cherry  or MERIT Flush Balm Cream Blush Apres  with Kosas Blush is Life Baked Talc-Free Dimensional + Brightening Blush Hype  or Hourglass Ambient Lighting Edit Unlocked Palette Evil Eye  over it all. (REALLY cheating here- but it covers quick powder, or highlighter lol.)

MASCARA- Iris&Romeo Lash Up Peptide Volumizing, Curling & Lengthening Mascara Friesian Black  - the best, and is quick easy coat or for multi layering.

SHADOW- DIOR Diorshow 5 Couleurs Couture Eyeshadow Palette 669 Soft Cashmere  or similar neutral

EYELINER- DIOR Diorshow Waterproof Liquid Liner 781 Matte Brown  flick on outer corner third

LIP- DIOR Rouge Dior Refillable Lipstick 964 Ambitious  or I’m now obsessed with TOM FORD Lip Color Lipstick Unzip  as a stain. Moody is the word for sure!  This is over swipe of the Huda black cherry to lock it in. I’m a layer kind of girl. 😊

I won’t do skincare as I abused my 6. 🫣

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@Sunnysmom  love the blush shades you chose, they look beautiful and I am sure they are stunning on you!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

I keep coming back to them because I love em so much and so easy @caitbird ! (So why does a person who shall go nameless keep buying more. 😳

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@Sunnysmom...I love that you know you're over and we both knew that was going to happen, but look at this list! 🤌🏽🤌🏽

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

This is how I know I’m here in my safe space with my people @danielledanielle , thank you! 🤗😘

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@danielledanielle Thanks for the tag and creating this fun thread!

Skin type: Oily

Fave features to play up: Lips and eyes

Tools of choice: Brushes. I would like to learn how to use the beauty blender. Any tips welcome for my oily skin!

Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Natural Glow Foundation 3.5

PATRICK TA Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush Duo She's So LA  - In trying to stay within the 6, this acts as a great blonzer

ONE/SIZE by Patrick Starrr Ultimate Blurring Setting Powder  for this oily gal

Tower 28 Beauty Swipe All-Over Hydrating Serum Concealer 5.0 EP  - once I am done this I will be moving on to Haus Labs concealer. I find this one is beautiful but I think the HL may sit better on my skin type.

caliray Come Hell or High Water Volumizing & Lengthening Tubing Mascara 0.37 oz / 11 mL  - I have been using other mascaras that are open but recently made my way back to this and it is an HG.

MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil Longwear Lip Liner 604 Up & Down Tan  with any lip oil or tinted lip balm

If I had to pick a palette (7) it would be Danessa Myricks Beauty Groundwork: Defining Neutrals - Palette For Eyes, Brows, Face & Lips  because I can use it in many ways - liner, to fill brows, bronzer if needed and of course a neutral eyeshadow look.

I also like to set with a setting spray. I have using Morphe Mini Continuous Setting Mist 1.3 oz/ 36.8 g  which has been a new love found during my trip to SEPHORiA!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@Mellmars1185  love your picks, these are some great products! I don't think I've tried the caliray mascara, but I've heard good things about it, I will have to add it to my list to try one of these days (once I work my way through some of the mascaras I already have).

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@caitbird Thank you! I like your idea of working your way through your current mascaras. I should do that but this mascara is *chef's kiss* to me!

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@Mellmars1185 oh yes I love a bb! You just need to make sure after you get it wet, you squeeze all the water out so it's just slightly damp, I know they are better for thicker foundations. I definitely love to use them to blend cream products as well

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@lmaster Thank you for the tips! I will try it out with cream products next time ☺️

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

No problem! And you use it with a bounce motion @Mellmars1185

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

Oh the MOOFY pencils @Mellmars1185 ! Great pick.  They are fabulous multitasking basics - MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil Longwear Lip Liner .  The MAKE UP FOR EVER Mini Artist Color Pencil Lipliner & Eyeliner Kit is a great pick up, too.

I prefer brushes, too.  But on brush wash day, I'll use a blender to avoid having to clean another brush.  I don't have any cool tips, except that you can sometimes use the bottom for cheek products (a wet sponge can really kick up a highlight), but I know @lmaster is a beautyblender user, maybe she can give a few

Re: Sephora Six: Back to Basics

@danielledanielle Thank you! Oh yes that looks like a great set. I regret not picking one up last year. I have tried a lot of liners but I tend to always go back to the MOOFYs.
