I keep buying lipsticks that say they have hydration, I don’t know what do buy anymore. I would appreciate if you can reach out to me with this problem. All the lipsticks that I have bought are very expensive, mean while they are very drying. I do have dry lips, I’m in my late 50”s, and I feel that know matter what brand I buy don’t cater for women in there late 50,s. I feel that they are made for much younger audience, I would appreciate any advice I could get on this matter
Under glosses and lipsticks I always use the Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick, it constantly keeps my lips hydrated. My routine to keep my lips hydrated is at night I use the Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick then put the Laniege Lip Sleeping Mask on top, in the morning when I wash my face that mask comes off and I reapply the Aquaphor Lip Repair Stick and use the Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Color Balm and then either the Laneige Lip Glowy Balm or the Fresh Sugar Hydrating Lip balm. Although I am younger than 50 this routine has helped my lips drastically. I always had dry cracked lips and tried many products but eventually I found this routine that works for me. I hope this helps and if it doesn’t I hope you find your routine that best fits you.
@Bar10bara I found that most of the time the pre-care is more important than the product. Especially because we all have our preferences for formulas, for example personally mattes look lovely on my lips but can be/look super drying on others. I would recommend doing an overnight lip mask, I highly recommend Too Faced Hangover Pillow Balm Ultra-Hydrating Lip Balm Original and the Bite Beauty Agave+ Intensive Vegan Lip Mask Agave The Too Faced product is more light-weight but still ultra hydrating while the Bite Beauty product is a bit more intense and heavy-weight (with almost a waxy feel). I also recommend using a lip scrub to exfoliate your lips prior to masking or applying your everyday lip care product. I personally like the ones from LUSH and using the SEPHORA COLLECTION Dual Ended Lip Exfoliator and Applicator Tool or a gentle old toothbrush to remove any excess dead skin.
As for lipstick formulas, my favorites are Yves Saint Laurent Volupté Plump-in-Color Plumping Lip Balm 1 Mad Nude but they aren't highly pigmented and have a high-shine effect. I find them very hydrating and lovely on the lips. I also like priming my lips before a more heavy weight lipstick with Mac Prep + Prime. I find it helps the lipstick lasts and gives a "smoothing" effect on the lips. My mom (over 50) swears by the YSL formulas and the prep and prime by MAC. Hope this helps 🙂
@Bar10bara hey, I'm much younger than you, but I heard that after hitting the 50's, you should use lip products and skincare that has hyaluronic acid in them. Hope this helps.
@Bar10bara Do you wear clear lip balm under lipstick? I almost always do, and I just turned 50 a couple months ago. I'm a lipstick addict who can't handle the vast majority of liquid matte lipsticks on the market, even with balm + lip primer underneath, because they're soooo drying. I also can't wear MAC Retro Matte bullets for the same reason, which means no Ruby Woo for me. But for most other matte bullets, a thin base layer of very good balm keeps my lips moisturized.
"Very good balm" for me is one that's petrolatum based. In fact, my daily lip balm is plain ol' Aquaphor Ointment—not even the version marketed as lip balm, just the regular ointment that comes in jars and tubes. As long as your lips are damp (with water, not saliva) when you apply Aquaphor, you'll seal in hydration. If your skin-sensitive to lanolin, which is in Aquaphor, other good options are CeraVe Healing Ointment, plain ol' Vaseline, and any generic petroleum jelly. I like Aquaphor the best because it's the least greasy option, but your preference may vary. You don't need to apply a ton at once. In face, you may want to lightly dab some of it off your lips before applying lipstick over it.
Also, as part of my AM and PM skincare routine, I use a lip serum. The product I use is marketed as a lip + eye cream, but it's not moisturizing enough on its own for me (and it irritates my undereyes, yet it's fine on my lips). It's Glossier Bubblewrap. It contains good hydrating ingredients and antioxidants, so I apply it to damp lips after I wash my face. Then I top it (redampening my lips if necessary) with Aquaphor.
Here are a few lipsticks that don't make my lips a desert:
GUERLAIN Rouge G Refillable Lipstick, satin finish - I can't speak to the matte finish (still haven't tried one), but most of the satins are very buttery and emollient. I never have to wear balm under these. Sephora doesn't carry all available shades, so you might also want to check other retailers or Guerlain's site. Oh, and you don't have to buy the "custom case": each bullet comes with a small plastic end cap. I have a custom case and don't like it because it's bulky and heavy and, in my opinion, poorly designed from a usability perspective. Whenever I carry a Rouge G on the go, I just use the plastic end cap it came with.
MAC Lustreglass Lipstick - marketed as sheer coverage, but some of these shades are demi-sheer and fuller coverage. This line replaced the old MAC Lustre line of bullets.
MAC Love Me Lipstick - full opacity shades that feel very emollient on the lips. Worth a try if you haven't yet.
Bobbi Brown Luxe Lipstick (non-matte) - in my opinion, the best performing bullet lipsticks this brand offers.
I can probably think of a few more options later.
Another option, though it may be more effort than you wanna make: mix a little Danessa Myricks Beauty Colorfix Eye, Cheek & Lip Cream Pigment Blossom (eh, any of the matte or metallic shades) with Aquaphor or CeraVe Healing Ointment to custom blend your own moisturizing lip color. I've done this many times.
I find that the lipsticks tints wears off so quickly and I want a lipstick that I don’t have to keep relying on, no I have not tried those two lipsticks tints but I do have them in many brands
