I'm a HUGE K-Beauty fan and I think it's great that Sephora is starting to carry more K-Beauty brands or Asian-inspired products. What are some brands that you all would like to see Sephora carry?
I'm a huge fan of COSRX and Skin Food. I also wish they carried more items from Neogen other than the peel pads and the foaming cleanser, they have so much to offer.
Etude house, innisfree, and nature republic

I love love love SkinFood's Tomato Cool & Dry Sun Spray. I bought a couple when visiting Korea and it is such a nice matte sunscreen spray for the body. I've been having a hard time finding this in the US. It is the best!
And, Sulwhasoo.
I’d love to see more Neogen, as well as Cosrx and Huxley. I’ve been getting more of my K-Beauty products from Riley Rose. It’s so great to be able to try out the things in store.
I want them to bring back tony moly, or they should have etude house and inns free products
Agree- I think Missha and Klairs would be a really good fit for sephora but I doubt they'd carry etude house either.
Also, just wanted to say I've been trying my first Blithe product ( i think they are either owned by or affiliated with glow receipe) which sephora carries and I really like it - they are definitely an interesting brand to check out!
I think Missha would be good for Sephora.
They do have a US website, usually good sales now and then and give ample freebies. (Sometimes full sizes)
Agreed on Etude House and Skinfood - they're lovely. I absolutely adore Etude House, but even though it's in a separate shop there (roadside shop) - still considered equivalent to a drugstore brand. Missha is more on par with Laneige.
There's a whole system with pricing and ages that I've seen before. If I find out where it is again, I'll post.
I WOULD LOVE to see Hera in Sephora. Get some high end Korean beauty here. The black cushion is cult status. Sulwhasoo is at Nordstrom, but would also make a nice addition.Those things...I can see here.
I'm a huge K-beauty fan too. I have a lot of intricate thoughts on the whole idea. I do get excited about seeing Korean brands (and Japanese brands and... and...I love the diversity). But as much as I love seeing more brands in Sephora and other stores, I still order from oversees.
I did find a bunch of K-beauty at our TJ Maxx today, including makeup by Clio, Peripera and Holika Holika. I did pick up a Holika Holika lipstick, but I still far prefer ordering online from trusted sellers I've grown to appreciate over the years. Again, I have some complex thoughts on all this.
I do LOVE that these brands get more exposure and business by being in shops like Sephora. And I LOVE Sephora. I usually shop here for other reasons though. Not saying they shouldn't come to Sephora.
I'm still going to order off the Etude House website, as they have frequent sales and discount codes. And their site is way too adorable. I'd still support Innisfree as they're the FIRST Korean brand to offer a shade range that's mindblowing for a Korean brand, at least to us in the West. (Seriously, they get massive props for that.) I'm still going to order off the smaller shops that I've come to love and have built relationships with.
I'm not sure how this sort of trade affects prices there. We import, taxes etc are added, prices are greater, the company bumps up their prices because they are getting more Western business, and where does that leave the average Korean? Etude House is supposed to be equivalent to a cheaper drugstore brand for teens. (Even though the quality is far beyond that IMO) What's that going to do? Again, not saying Sephora should't carry brands like that - I do worry about how it affects the local stock there, etc. And by no means am I an expert in trade or anything or how all this works. They're just random concerns. Possibly partly from watching our drugstore prices inflate.
Too many deep thoughts 😄 I love supporting Sephora. I love supporting those other shops too. Perhaps it would do nothing to the prices there. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I would hope. Worldwide economies are all so different, and I just would hate to affect the experience for others. Or have them be in a situation where drugstore items are costing $10-20 regular price when they used to be $5! WTF 😄
This might not be a popular viewpoint. I get that I am a deep thinker. Darn brain. But I just thought I'd share another viewpoint. YES I would love more exposure for amazing K-brands! That's the gist of it, as long as the people it was really intended for can still afford it too.
You raise an interesting concern @MistBerry! I'm not sure we need to be worried about the inflating the domestic price for Korean cosmetics the same way N. American consumers have done with other commodities. What you have described def happens all the time so I follow your train of thought. You can see this everywhere from foreign consumption of traditional foods like quinoa or foreign speculative investment into attractive housing markets causing them to spike, like what has happened in my own city of Toronto :'( But this doesn't happen in all circumstances. Nor do all markets fluctuate in price so much. Imagine if the prices for cars fluctuated the same way it can for oil!!!
Expansion doesn't always lead to domestic prices rising. For example, expanding fast fashion worldwide hasn't raised the prices of clothes anywhere and certainly not in the countries where companies like H&M, Inditex/Zara etc. are headquartered. If anything, their expansion has accelerated the bankrupting of many mid-range apparel brands and driven down the price of clothing to shocking, rock bottom prices.
Locals can def get priced out when they have a weaker economy and become bound by unfavourable trade deals and/or the local purchasing power is weak and too small in comparison to the foreign consumer or investor. But it seems to me, and I'd have to research to be sure, that the domestic Korean market for beauty is massive and highly competitive. I don't think K-beauty could survive without their domestic market. In terms of massive, Korean beauty standards are so stringent, it would take a major cultural shift for N. Americans to spend as much per capita on beauty and adopt the same standards. In terms of competition, Korean customers are accustomed to high quality products at low prices. The demand is there, and even if some K-beauty companies raised their prices, there would be others at the ready to fill that profitable gap.
Anyways, I'm no trade expert or economist either! Just my own thoughts 🙂
@pocketvenus
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Thanks for raising the issue @MistBerry, it's important to think about these things!! I could be totally wrong and prices could go up in Korea. There are so many factors that can affect the pricing of goods...
@pocketvenus
I hope no one thinks that I'm trying to rain on the parade or anything.
As you, I'm not an expert, maybe in deep thinking. 🙂
It's something I've thought about for a while. It was pretty tough to share my thoughts. I would love more business for both Sephora and the brands though.
I think it's totally fair to raise concerns about the products we use 🙂 @MistBerry
@MistBerry Love love love getting a peek at your train of thought here... I joke a lot about treating capitalism as a contact sport but I'm motivated by this sort of thing when I say that. As far as the global economy is concerned my "votes" are my dollars, and one of the main avenues of influence I have, even if they're barely a drop in the macroeconomics ocean.
@fieldsofclover
Contact sport...so true.
I agree, I vote with my wallet.
My train of thought? Always going and sometimes pretty random 😄 Not always popular. But I try to be conscientious about my choices.
Probably not gonna happen because of AmorePacific's intricate world domination plans, but Innisfree and Etude House (makeup too not just skincare!) would be awesome.
cosrx, banila co, ac well 🙂
