perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

Did you ever have a perfume you didn't like at first but ended up loving? Or perfumes you loved and then one day, you just couldn't wear it anymore?

Some perfumes that won me over were L'AP's Dzongkha (it struck me as too dank at first) and By Kilian's Pearl Oud (so pungent! But if you're patient the dry down is amazing...)

I used to love TF's Black Orchid when it first came out - the opening was so unusual - now, I suppose I've tried so many unusual fragrances, it's lost that allure for me and I can't bear it. Etat Libre's Remarkable People used to be one I liked for an easy wear but now for some reason it smells to me like I'm wearing hairspray. Can't do it anymore.

I used to wear Curve in high school, loved it soooo much! Went back to it in my 20's, and it smelled like someone dunked me in a frat party keg

I used to hate any perfume I smelled from Chanel - granted the only ones I did smell were No. 5 (and the other numbered ones), Allure, and Coco - but lo and behold I took a chance on Coco Mademoiselle and I'm addicted. I'm at the point where I need to be smelling it all times LOL.

Unfortunately, this caused me to grow out of Flowerbomb, which I have loved for the past few years. It just gives me a headache now. Luckily my mom likes it so I'll give my unopened backup to her!

same here with Coco Mademoiselle !

I use to hate that smell and   one day I put it on and wear it for couple years !!

strange isn't it? How can that happen

Re: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

I haven't grown out of any yet, I'm testing many.

But I do have two that I couldn't stand at first, but now are some of my favorites. Histoires de Parfums 1725 and 1740.

Re: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

@Samtian

1740 definitely took some time for me too!

Oooh I like this thread!

Perfumes I grew out of:

  • Viktor and Rolf Flowerbomb - I always thought I loved this but now it smells a bit grandma-ish. Maybe it just never really mixed right with my body chemistry but I cannot wear it!
  • YSL Black Opium - I thought it smelled more sweet and pretty yet is still a night time fragrance IMO, but now when I spray it it just seems so heavy and musky. It's ok but its not all that I expected it to be.

Perfume that grew on me:

  • Marc Jacobs Daisy - I thought this one was so basic (maybe because for awhile it was always offered as a sample). I had not smelled it in a long time and I went to Sephora to finally redeem a certificate for a full size perfume from a Christmas perfume sampler set, and I surprisingly chose Daisy. My fiancé likes it a lot too.

Another one I've done a 180 on is Tom Ford's Oud Wood - when I first smelled it, there was a depth to it that I loved and now it smells very top heavy and too light to me, such that I wonder if it's been reformulated! Either way, so sad!

Tom Ford's Velvet Orchid. I wasn't sure about it when my boyfriend blind bought it for me but now I really love it. It's dark floral and warm with just a hint of masculinity. Another one that I really thought was weird and still do think is weird but I like it anyways is Tom Ford's Orchid Soleil... it smells slightly like tortilla chips lmao it's oddly enjoyable though 😂

Found another one today: Derek Lam 2AM Kiss. Smells amazing on the card, disgusting on my skin when I first spray it, then amazing again on the dry down.

Creed Spring Flowers

French perfume is so unreal.

It smells like crap at first.

There's prolly real crap in it since it's real French.

And then, you have the softest most natural smell you've ever smelled.

$200.00 a bottle is Nothing to smell that good.

I love Creed Spring Flowers.

Yes there is, but I get allergic smellin fake flowers - Sing to 'Green Acres'

Back when I was first getting into fragrance I loved Marc...

Back when I was first getting into fragrance I loved Marc Jacob's Honey, but now I feel like it smells so artificial and harsh on me. Good thing I have a huge bottle. 🙄

Re: Back when I was first getting into fragrance I loved Marc...

@aimelynn

Sorry to hear Honey doesn't work for you anymore... 😞 This is why it takes me forever to buy a full bottle!!

RE: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

Definitely everything by Tocca. I swear to God Giulietta smells amazing on me if I showered first thing in the morning but if I did the night before and try to wear it the next day it makes me gag. Same thing with Stella but I haven't been able to identify what the trigger is.

RE: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

I love Stella, but now you've got me thinking....does it smell differently on me depending when I take a shower????

Re: RE: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

I used to love Guilietta, for several months it was perfection to me. One day something changed and I went from loving it to wanting to gag at the slightest whiff of it. It had a sourness I hadn't noticed before and that sourness overtook everything else about the fragrance I had loved before.

One fragrance that grew on me is Fleur Jolie Lavande by Tory Burch. Initially it seemed one-dimensional and way too heavy on the voilet. Now it is my signature and has led to so many compliments. I even had some samples made up for all the strangers who come up and say how much they love the scent. Now I can give them a little vial to try for themselves! 🙂

Re: RE: perfumes that grew on you/perfumes you grew out of

I'm the same way!  I bought the Tocca discovery kit, because so many sounded lovely based on the notes...but I haven't really liked a single one!  There's something harsh..acrid, chemically about every one of their scents on me
