Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

hi everyone!! I feel like I've been hunting for the right undereye concealer forever. I have dry skin, so I can't set under my eyes with powder because it just immediately becomes a cracked/cakey mess. I FINALLY don't have gross peely, cakey sections but now my undereye concealer looks weird almost from the get-go, kind of like it's separating? I tried to get a picture but it's so difficult to get a picture of your eye. it's not cakey looking, but it looks incredibly blotchy and patchy and I'm not sure if now my undereyes are overhydrated or still too dry! and if it's still too dry, what eye creams/gels do you recommend to help a girl out?

Re: Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

I know this is an older post, but I have been having this exact same problem @basiairene.  Did anything wind up working for you?  I think I am over moisturizing and am going to try to cut back a bit.

Re: Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

Yeah, I think my problem was definitely over-moisturizing slash just not waiting long enough for my moisturizer to sink in. I don't have a ton of time in the mornings to get ready, so even though I was waiting what I thought was a decent amount of time, it definitely wasn't long enough. So if I'm still in a hurry I started patting away the excess moisturizer with my finger or with a tissue and that's seemed to help!

Thank you so much @basiairene!  I appreciate the help/advice!  🙂

I have a very similar problem! Did you ever figure out how to prevent it?

RE: Re: Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

You’ve got to watch how much eye cream you put on and give it some time to sink in. Sometimes too much eye cream can make it pilly. Also sometimes eye creams and concealers just aren’t a a good match for each other. Everyone’s skin is different so it all depends. Hope this helps!

Re: Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

I also have dry skin, especially under my eyes. When my concealer looks like that, I either haven’t moisturized enough or need to exfoliate that area. Exfoliation isn’t much of a problem anymore, thanks to my undereye serum. [ EDITED 7/16/19: I think I meant to say “thanks to my undereye routine.” My eye serum doesn’t really exfoliate much. It contains AHA & BHA, but it’s at the wrong pH to effectively exfoliate. Once in a while, I gently wipe my undereyes with a soft reusable round made of bamboo & cotton with a terry cloth texture; so I do a bit of physical exfoliation in that area. Integrity compels me to correct my statement a month later. 🙂 ] But here’s how I fix the other issue during my morning skincare routine:

1. If my undereyes are quite dry by the time I reach my eye cream step, I tap a little water on them—just enough to make that skin damp. Then I immediately apply moisturizer so it can seal in that hydration.

2. Apply layers of moisturizer. I use Biossance Squalane + Peptide Eye Gel in the morning. I apply one layer, give it 3 minutes to absorb, then apply a second layer if my skin still seems dry. In the winter, I often have to apply 3 or even 4 layers of moisturizer.

I do set my concealer with powder. As long as I hydrate and moisturize enough, my powder doesn’t cake. It helps to use the smallest amount of powder necessary. I use By Terry Hyaluronic Hydra-Powder and need such a tiny amount, you’d think I wasn’t applying powder at all if you watched me do it. 😄 But that tiny bit is all that’s needed.

Re: Undereye Concealer--too dry or too hydrated?

@basiairene It looks like it's breaking up- maybe give your undereye moisturizer more time to sink in? Or use less? IDK exactly which- if it never soaks in all the way probably use less. If you have "normal" skin after a little bit it's probably just a matter of waiting
