The Winged Eyeliner Thread

There have been many postings on winged eyeliner.  I thought it would great to have a dedicated thread.  Please post your tips, struggles, and everything in between.

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

These are great examples of what you were saying, I can really see how it works in action now @pocketvenus. I love the way they look! ๐Ÿคฉ

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

@greeneyedgirl107 Great idea for a thread!

My first try at winged liner was to use some tape to mask off the area and provide a guide. Same idea as using SEPHORA COLLECTION Makeup Tape .

Iโ€™ve also tried the connect the dots method. I put a dot where I want the wing to end and connect it back to my eyes. I like this a little more as it gives me a target to aim for. I combined it with the tape for a little while until I was comfortable doing it freehand.

One method that I learned from a friend who is a MUA (and also my brow tech) is to map it out with some eyeshadow before going back and committing with actual eyeliner. If you make a mistake or donโ€™t like the result, itโ€™s easier to buff away and try again.

As for products, I like something with a felt tip. My go-to for a while was SEPHORA COLLECTION Intense Felt-Tip Liquid Waterproof Eyeliner 02 - Satin Chocolate Brown. Now Iโ€™m using Dolly Wink My Best Liner for daily looks. I find it easier to get a nice sharp line and do a flick to make a wing.

I also recently saw someone start by drawing the tip of the wing first and then connecting it to the rest of the liner instead of trying to flick it out. Going from the outside-in instead of the usual inside-out. The result is was a sharp, crisp wing.

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

Great advice @JoSometimes this was a good read!

I always draw the outer edge of my wings backwards. ( Imo Once you get the hang of it it makes everything so much easier ๐Ÿ˜‰

What type of wings do you like to draw, What is your go to style?

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

@CynthieLu My struggle with winged liner is my hooded eyes. The hood gets in the way, so I usually just do little baby wings.

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

@greeneyedgirl107 Awww thanks. Itโ€™s an older photo from the summer time. I havenโ€™t really done winged liner since then.

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

@JoSometimes I liked the picture, too...but I think you meant to rag cynthielu  ๐Ÿ˜€

@JoSometimes thanks for posting!!!

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

@CynthieLu I wanted to tag you first!  I'm still experimenting with Kaja Wink Stamp Original Waterproof Wing Eyeliner Stamp & Pen Original Ink Black  .  I've tried it four times: twice in store, and twice since I purchased it.  Twice it's been a nice look, and twice it hasn't gone well - either too short/stubby or just not a good line.  I'll have to experiment a little more.  The curvature on the bottom is throwing me.

The Kaja Wink Stamp Long Waterproof Wing Eyeliner Stamp & Pen  has worked better for me.  I've only tried in about four times as well - twice in store and twice at home.  What I will say is that I prefer the longer length -- though I'd probably prefer a mix between the original and the long.  This is rather thin, and it does have a curve.  The way my eyes are, I find that I need to build it up.  So, the line becomes thicker, and the curvature less noticeable.

I do really like the pen that comes with it!

I've posted on BIC before that I really gravitate toward my cheap-o Lottie London wing stamp.

For tips, I have to say that stamps are working better for me.  I'd like to think that I can build my confidence with them, and then maybe graduate to doing my own free-hand.  But that's a hope that might not come to fruiting due to my limited skills and lack of time to practice.  I mean, I could practice all day, but my eyes wouldn't hold up to continually taking off the liner and reapplying.

I like to apply my usual eyeliner CLINIQUE Quicklinerโ„ข For Eyes Intense Eyeliner  , then do the stamp.  I found that trying to draw the line on with a pen wasn't the easiest for me.  I think I could do it, but the pencil is so much more convenient.  If you are feeling like the ink on the stamp and your lashline don't match up, then go over your pencil with a pen.

I've also been experimenting with different head positions.  My preference is just to look straight on and apply.  But my eyes can have more or less hooding depending on the time of day, how much I slept, etc.  The stamps were getting messed up on my right eye, which tends to be more hooded.  I've had success with tilting my head back and then stamping.  It doesn't skip as much.

For confidence, I also rec not judging your wings until you apply your mascara.  I've found that when they look subpar, once I put mascara on (I like to get as much as I get) the wings look better to me!

I'm super interested to see what else BIC posts!

Re: The Winged Eyeliner Thread

This is great advice @greeneyedgirl107. What a super fun and helpful idea for a thread!

You mention sooooo many helpful hints. Yes! ๐Ÿ˜Š Do not give up. Eyeliner takes time too get comfortable with. I love how you didn't give up and kept working at it! Hurray! ๐Ÿ’–๐ŸŽ‰ Good wings don't happen over night. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Another great point you made, Mascara brings alot of looks together. That's so true. Eyeshadow, Eyeliner everything looks better with mascara.

I'm going to have to come back and do my own little bit of tips and tricks and I hope others do to, learning together from each other is so helpful.

Thank you for the tag! ๐Ÿ’•
