Eyeshadow learning advice

So, I've been familiar with makeup for like two years now but I never ever bothered to learn how to apply eyeshadow and now I really want to be good at it (I only apply a single colour on my lids and crease then call it a day lol). The whole concept of the base, transition colour and everything makes sense to me, but I just do not understand how to go about it myself because when I try, it turns out a mess. Can I get some advice please?

RE: Eyeshadow learning advice

Hi, the first thing I’d recommend is to have fun. It’s just makeup, wash it off when you don’t like it. Next, remember to practice when you have plenty of time, and you’re going to bed instead of out.... 1. Find out if your skin is warm or cool. If it’s neutral, find out which temp you lean toward. If no one can help with that, decide which color jewelry looks best on you - gold (warm) or silver (cool) - and use that as a guide until an expert mua can show you why she thinks differently. 2. Use your temp. to help decide your foundation, concealer, contour/highlights, tinted moisturizer/sunblock, blush. Then, use what clothing & jewelry temp you’ll be wearing to guide your decisions for eyeshadow/liner; lipstick. Be careful wearing a temp of lipstick that is not your natural temp, choosing a neutral lipstick will be your best bet if going ā€œagainstā€ your natural temp in order to work ā€œwithā€ your jewelry/clothing choice. Obviously you’re going to want to sort your closet into warm/cool/neutral. As you buy cosmetics/jewelry, try to stick with your natural temp until you feel confident mixing/wearing opposing temp. Also, if you wear jewelry/clothing of opposing temp, I would stick to a neutral/subtle eyeshadow, and a subtle blush. Don’t use different temps on your face/body unless you’ve been shown by an expert how to do so. Mixing can give your skin a weird look - people might would say things like you look tired, or are you just getting over being sick, et cetera. This is one of the ways women who look gorgeous all the time, do so. Even your nail polishes should coordinate with temp. If I wasn’t clear - wear your makeup, clothing, and jewelry all in one temp or the other, (or mixed/neutral). There is a French fashion designer on YouTube who goes through a bunch of this stuff in easy to learn vids. Her name is Justine (can’t remember her last name); she has long, brown hair. Your use of one color over the whole lid can be very chic if you use a natural color like a soft, matte brown, with a subtle ā€œbrowlighterā€ (just cleaning up your brows with a concealer can be enough for that). Then use a subtle blush and a beautiful lipstick. Lipstick, btw, is the cosmetic which puts color in your face, so use it to feel better when you have the ā€œblahsā€. Blush does not put color on your face as you’d think it would, which is why some women overdo the blush, trying to feel better. In a pinch, you can use your lipstick on lips, cheeks, and eyes. Done well (meaning eyes and cheeks will be nearly naked), this can be the perfect look when you can’t decide what to wear and you’re short on time. 3. When you’re ready to buy good eyeshadows, see if you can get a small, mixed pallet first, individuals later. Be sure at least two colors are good for you. Sephora brand has good shadows and won’t break the bank. You will also need a good concealer for mistakes, and for cleaning up your brows. The concealer can make a good browlighter, and primer for eyelids. The key to beautifully made up eyes is beautifully done eyebrows. If you already have shadows, spend your money on having your brows professionally done - you’ll never want to do your brows yourself, again. 4. You can have ā€œbargainā€ shadows, if they are put on with good brushes, but you’ll waste ā€œgoodā€ shadows if they’re put on with ā€œbargainā€ brushes. Sephora brand brushes are good enough, and you can buy only the basics at first, and use them for double duty, swiping off color onto a tissue, if you need to. 5. A good concealer will never go wrong and you can buy those in a mini, as they’ll last a while. Concealing your under eye is as important if not more-so when making up your eyes. A good makeup remover will also be a good friend. All of these products are part of making up your eyes, and so will help you feel better about your skills with eyeshadows. I know this is a lot - you don’t have to memorize it! Print it out if you like it, but soon enough all of these things will be second nature. Tell yourself you’ll do fine and you will. Please let us know how you’re doing, ok? Cheers! - Linda.

RE: Eyeshadow learning advice

Eye makeup can honestly be one of the most challenging things to learn 7 years in and I’m still learning every day! But here are some tips I hope they help 1. Identify your eye shape and look up videos according to that, you need to understand what your eye shape is in order to figure the best way to apply product! 2. If it helps lay out ur brushes to go with each color, the smaller your brush gets the darker the shadow should be Ex: your transition should be used with the fluffiest crease brush to diffuse the color and your pencil brush would probably be used with a dark brown or even black 3. Look at how you hold the brush, the closet you hold to bristles mean your putting more pressure = more pigmentation which is good on your lid. On your crease though keep your hand at the very end of the brush handle it’ll apply less pressure so your blend is more seamless 4 this should’ve been 1 but oh whale lol always prime and set with a powder it’ll ensure everything goes on more smooth 5. Be patient. The best makeup artists take time to create something don’t rush the process, over time you’ll get quicker but start slow Make sure if you have a hooded eye you’re not using brushes that are too big try and listen to brush a guru is using and why she’s using it 6. When you lay your first color it should be the highest color on your eye, slightly above the crease. Your crease color should go slightly under that and then that process just keeps going 7. Windshield wiper motions apply colors, circles buff If you have any other questions feel free to message me on Instagram @mel.keup I’d be more than happy to help! Good luck ✨

I’m learning too, I found the Too Faced Palettes like Natural Matte and Boudoir Eye that come with a guide on how to apply the eyeshadow worked best for me. Also like other have suggested watch YouTube videos on looks that you like and practice many times

RE: Eyeshadow learning advice

Make sure you have a good couple of eyeshadow brushes (packing, crease, angle brushes) this honestly helps a lot with easy application. Then having good quality eyeshadow which I’m sure you already have. Watch videos, and just practice for fun. Not every tutorial is going to work for every eye shape as well, so know your eye shape and look into techniques that work well for you. You will get there don’t worry! Practice makes perfect @Kikoriki

Re: Eyeshadow learning advice

As the other replies already said, I recommend watching some YouTube videos, I used to suck at eyeshadow before watching some videos too. I love watching Jeffree Star and Laura Lee, I know most of the time, watching makeup videos are extremely boring and dry, especially when those YouTuber go on and on about irrelevant shit... Jeffree and Laura are amazing and you can really get a lot out of them without wanting to shut your computer due to boredom šŸ™‚

Thanks a lot for the advice!

I love watching makeup videos on youtube šŸ™‚ I really do not think they're boring however, I would never watch a Jeffree Star video because he's racist

A less pricey version is sonia kashuk's neutral palette at target. Great variety of matte neutral colors to play with.

Re: Eyeshadow learning advice

DEFINITELY try Kat Von D's Shade and Light Eye Contour Palette for experimenting with different shades of warm/cool tones you can use in your crease. If you want to move to more intense looks, but your not sure what you like on your eye shape yet... the Naked 1 Palette from Urban Decay has a great variety of shimmer shades as well as a couple beautiful transition shades. The one thing that changed my life is a high quality blending brush and a flat shadow packer brush. SO if you don't have some different ones you like, try Morphe Brushes. šŸ™‚  ā¤ļø
