gift card fraud!

so in February 2025 I got a $50 gift card for my birthday never used it, I went to a store to finally use it and they said there was no money on it. I had literally scratched it that morning before going to the mall, they said to report it maybe as fraud. I honestly would just want like a check or something. because I don't really trust gift cards. what do it do?
