Store Credit for Online Only?

I returned a gift and asked for the return as a gift card. The cashier put it on a store credit card and didn't make it clear that this could only be used in-stores. Seriously, this is a system I have never heard used. What multi-billion company separates their gift cards between online and in-store? I'm pretty angry, actually really angry, because I only want the Natasha Denona Sunset and Lila palettes and they're not available in stores near me and I literally live on an island and can't just drive to another State or anything to purchase.

Is there any way I can get my store credit as a gift card to be used online?

I had the same thing happen to me. Got a store credit. Was still at the mall when I tried to use it on sephors.com (More options), no luck! Went to the store when I was still there and they didn't have ANY OF THOSE ITEMS! I want to check another sephora but it would be a 40 minute drive....
