Sephora Gift Card Issue

I purchased a Happy Birthday gift card in July for a close friend of mine, and when she tried to go and use the gift card in the store, the cashier said that the card was invalid/had not been activated and that the person who purchased it needed to contact Customer Service to resolve the issue. I called Customer Service 4 times, each time I was told something different. First I was told I needed to redeem the card on happycards.com. When I tried that, the website said the pin was invalid. The next customer service agent said that I needed to contact the Federal Trade Comission (???) to resolve my issue and implied that me (or my friend) was lying about spending money on the card. When I asked them whether they could tell me when/where the card has been used, they said they couldn't help me and I should contact the FTC for any future queries. 

 

I honestly never write on such forums but I am only doing so to warn anybody of purchasing gift cards from Sephora. I felt horrible after the last call, my only fault being trying to get something for my friend for her birthday. What am I supposed to do now?
