Sephora Credit Card/ point of sale

as background, I do have a Sephora credit card. After racking up some debt, I decided to pay off the credit card and never use it again. I haven’t used it in over a year. I made a purchase of $154 on July 30. the reps always ask if you want to pay with your Sephora credit card during check out, but I always decline and use Apple Pay from my debit card instead. I even saw the transaction go through immediately on my Chase alert App. About a week later, I went to exchange a concealer and return a lip balm. I was told I could only do store credit or have the money refunded back to my Sephora credit card. I informed the rep that I did not pay with my Sephora credit card. I paid with my debit card and I even showed her the transaction on my bank statement. However, she told me I would need to call customer service as the only option she had were to refund the Sephora credit card or give me a store credit card. I walked outside and called customer service. They couldn’t help me and directed me to the bank that’s Sephora uses, Comenity. They confirmed what I already knew, that I didn’t have a balance and haven’t made a purchase in over a year. They couldn’t offer any explanation as to why the Sephora Rep is saying that the charges were made on my Sephora credit card. I asked them to completely close my account, which they finally did, after three attempts at getting me to keep it open. They recommended I call customer service. Not wanting to deal with the hassle, I went back in to get a store credit for the lip balm because if she were to return the lip balm to my Sephora credit card for a purchase that was never made, Where would that money go? This is the second time this has happened to me, and the first time I wasn’t sure what was happening, so agreed to refund back to the credit card I never used. Where that money ended up going is beyond me.  I don’t know if the Sephora sales people are inaccurately documenting the sale method to boost their upsales for the credit card usage?  I’m not sure what else could have happened. Has this happened to anyone else?
