Revoked promo code savings for partial return

I returned a $50 product today that I purchased during the $15 off promotion (order total of $79 before promo). My receipt says I was refunded a total of only $45, including tax!

Is the $9.49 on the receipt indicating that Sephora has kept a proportional amount of the $15 promotion? Is this a regular practice? It makes sense but it caught me off guard.

Unfortunately, I also received it on a giftcard when my product was barely used and returned within 30 days... Any reason why this might happen?

Yes, @fakedeep, it's standard practice to include whatever discount you may have used during the purchase. They pro-rated the discount based on the number and value of the items you purchased that day.
