Return and repurchase with promo code

I made a purchase last night at Sephora located inside JcPenny’s. I prefer to buy things online vs in store because you usually end up paying a little less / getting more for your money; but I needed to be shade-matched since it is my 1st time trying a new foundation and ended up purchasing it in store. After I returned home w/ my purchase I check my email and find a message ad saying Sephora is running their 2019 promo sale giving you 15-25$ off (based on insider status) in store or online. I am a little disappointed that the sales girl at the store did not inform me of the current promo. It’s true, I did not ask about the coupon, and I know it’s not the employees job to ave me money, but woman to woman - we should be helping each other out. Do I need to return the purchase in store and then re-purchase it in order to use the promo code, or is it possible to have it credited beck to my account?

If it’s unused I would get a refund. It sucks for the store but $25 off is a big promo 33% off!
